Friends,

As we have watched Hurricane Harvey continue to do damage in Texas and now Louisiana, one of our members - Betsy Flowers - is from Houston. Her family is safe and dry out-of-town, but there are many others not so fortunate. In addition to the Red Cross, here are some places to donate or get more information through the UCC:

[08/10/17]   Friends,

The city has installed a new bike rack in the public right-of-way on 11th Avenue near the corner with 65th Street. It is just like the one on 65th near the steps to the front entrance. Thanks to Christina Bogar for signing us up for this free installation.

The book club meets on Saturday. It will be held at Kathy Repp's home in Snohomish, WA at 11:00 am. Those who wish to carpool are meeting at St. Paul's at 10:00 am. The book is The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey, with discussion led by Karen Delaney.

Judie Altizer is collecting school supplies for the children served by Mary's Place shelter. Contact her for details.

Courtney Stange-Tregear is collecting items for backpacks for homeless students at Ballard High School this fall. Contact her for details.

On Sunday Karen Delaney is greeting, Dave Heater is worship leader, David Anderson is monitoring the sound system, and fellowship time is a potluck to celebrate the 30th anniversary of my ordination. I'm in the dark about details, so any questions should be directed to the Church Council. Bill Soderberg is closing the building on Sunday evening.

Sunday is also an Emergency Feeding Program Sunday. The closet is always open on Sundays for folk to check on their particular food items.

Also on Sunday the Idriss Mosque (1420 NE Northgate Way) has an annual BBQ from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. This began after 9/11 as a way of thanking the wider community for the protection and support that so many offered at a time when they were literally under threat. All are welcome.

Church Council meets on Monday at 7:00 pm in the Nursery.

Blessings,

Tim

From Hiroshima To Hope

Friends,

Francine Walls is coordinating the installation of the picture railing in the Gallery today. And the hot and smoke-filled weather today is a reminder that a simple inconvenience for us, is a very significant event for the folks up north where the fires are located. All of the border walls and us-first policies can't change the fact that we are all interdependent.

Sunday is a family child-friendly worship service with communion. Sharon James and Mary Lou Weitzel are greeting, Mark Stange-Tregear is worship leader, David Anderson is monitoring the sound system, and Jane and Charlie Roys are hosting fellowship time.

Also on Sunday we are staffing the first (cooking) shift for the Ballard Sunday Dinners. The work time is at 2 through 5:30 pm. Please contact Chris Knutsen if you are able to help.

And the annual Hiroshima to Hope event at Green Lake is on Sunday at 6 pm - www.fromhiroshimatohope.org.

[07/27/17]   Dear St. Paul’s community,

To piggyback on Pastor Tim’s message (welcome back, Tim!) we are on duty for feeding the homeless for the next two Sundays. Each church volunteers to head up the Sunday Night Dinners when there is a 5th Sunday in the month, and this month we and NW Christian are sharing those duties. We could use a couple of volunteers for a short cleanup shift this Sunday from 5:30 to 7 (come at 5 if you want to eat first).

Then on August 6 we are on duty for our regular first Sunday of the month, and it is our turn to take the cooking/set-up shift from 2 to 5:30. Can you help on either (or both) of these Sundays? If you have not volunteered yet at one of these dinners, this is an easy way to do some much-needed good in the community, and our guests are so appreciative! The dinner takes place at Ballard First Lutheran Church, just down 65th St from St Paul’s.

Thank you so much!

Chris Knutsen

[07/27/17]   Friends,

Thanks to all who engaged in the ministry of St. Paul's while I was away! The sabbatical time was informative, and there will be a document available to read for anyone who might be interested.

On Saturday there is a work party for the church grounds coordinated by Sharon James and Francine Walls, beginning at 9:00 and concluding at 11:00 am (with food). Let's hope that our local weather is getting the rain out of its system today!.

On Sunday Sue Thomas and Ruth Velasco-Schmitz are greeting, David Anderson is monitoring the sound system, Mimi Altice is worship leader, and Francine Walls is hosting fellowship time. And during fellowship time there are sundaes and root beer floats!

I am grateful for St. Paul's as a place of grounding and connection during these anxious times, and missed that (and you) while on sabbatical.

Blessings,
Tim
