Friends,

Thanks to all who helped with church last Sunday, and to Christina Bogar for preaching! And also thanks to those who attended the conference annual meeting last Saturday, the "Walkabout" last Monday, and to Charlie Roys who is doing some exterior painting today.

Yesterday Kris Garratt (Artist-in-Residence at University UCC) and I set up a sculpture exhibit in the new Gallery (former Library). It is called "The Wise and Radical Jesus" and will be in that space through the month of May.

The book club is meeting this Saturday at 10:30 am in the Nursery to discuss My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman, and led by yours truly.

On Sunday there is a choir rehearsal at 10:30 am. Sharon James and Mary Lou Weitzel are greeting (and check out the refinished lobby table thanks to Sharon), David Anderson is monitoring the sound system, Jane Roys is worship leader, and the Scott-Weis family is hosting fellowship time. It is a family-friendly worship with communion, so there is no church school. Bill Soderberg is closing the building in the evening.

This is our Sunday to work at the Sunday Dinner at Ballard First Lutheran Church (2nd shift - 4:30 pm arrival). I am the team leader for this time, but do still contact Chris Knutsen if you can participate.

Church Council meets on Monday at 7:00 pm in the Nursery. Mimi Altice is away for this meeting so any questions should be directed to Vice-Moderator Doug Knutsen.

The memorial service for Hans Mueller will be at Horizon House (900 University St) on Saturday, May 13 at 2 pm. Parking is available there in the HH garage. Parking and carpooling is also available at St. Paul's. I will need to be at HH early, but the parking lot door will be unlocked. So if you make arrangements with someone to carpool, you can meet inside, use the bathrooms, etc.

We have needed to cancel the May 19-21 retreat at Pilgrim Firs. Not enough folk have signed up from either church.

The memorial service for Bettie Lucas' son, Danny Lay, will be at St. Paul's on Sat, May 27 at 2 pm.

And looking further ahead, there will be an opportunity to join (become a member of) St. Paul's during worship on Sunday, May 28.

Friends,

On Saturday a few of us will be attending the UCC conference annual meeting, this year at Pilgrim Firs.

I am away on Sunday as it is a "5th Sunday" as I am back to being 3/4 time. Carol Banach is also away and JoAn Andenes will be substituting for her.

On Sunday Mimi Altice and Francine Walls are opening the building, Sue Thomas and Ruth Velasco-Schmitz are greeting, Francine is monitoring the sound system, Christina Bogar is preaching, Sharon James is worship leader, and Tricia Lovely is hosting fellowship time. There is no church school teacher, but there are magic boards, books, activity packages, and children's worship bulletins in the Narthex. Bill Soderberg is closing the building in the evening.

On Monday evening at 7:00 pm there is a special "Walkabout" where all the details of the church (Sunday worship supplies, office details, fellowship, pest control, storage, trash / recycling pick up schedule, furnaces, etc.) will be shared! The Church Council and a few others have been asked to come, but anyone is welcome. The more people that know this information the better!

The memorial service for Hans Mueller will be at Horizon House (900 University St) on Sat, May 13 at 2 pm. Parking is available there in the HH garage. Parking and carpooling is also available at St. Paul's.

The memorial service for Bettie Lucas' son, Danny Lay, will be at St. Paul's on Sat, May 27 at 2 pm.

The registration form for the church retreat at Pilgrim Firs (May 19-21) is attached. The deadline to register is Sunday, May 7.

And looking further ahead, there will be an opportunity to join (become a member of) St. Paul's during worship on Sunday, May 28.

Prayers for Dick Watts and our groundskeeper, Lyle Goddard.

Blessings,

Tim

Hans Siegfried Mueller's Obituary on The Seattle Times

Friends,

On Saturday Marci Scott-Weis is leading the spring spiritual retreat. It is also Earth Day and there will be a UCC contingent in the Science March - meeting at the German UCC building at 1107 E Howell at 9:30 am (also open for restrooms, water, etc.). It is also Carol Banach's birthday (and Christina Bogar's birthday is today)!

On Sunday Karen Delaney and Francine Walls are greeting, and Francine is setting up the sound system and is worship leader (sense a theme here?). Sharon James is hosting fellowship time and Tricia Lovely is teaching church school. This is the Sunday that the church school participants decide what animal(s) will be delivered via the Heifer Project - and it is looking good - we collected a little over $300. I am the building closer on Sunday evening. .

The memorial service for Hans Mueller will be on Saturday, May 13, at 2:00 pm at Horizon House (900 University Street on First Hill). A notice was in the Seattle Times on Tuesday and can be found here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/seattletimes/obituary.aspx?n=hans-siegfried-mueller&pid=185121152

Friends,

Today is Maundy Thursday. "Maundy" is from the Latin word for "commandment" and remembers the new commandment of Jesus: "to love one another even as I have loved you." Poignant words for our polarized world.

On Easter Sunday there is a choir rehearsal at 10:00 am. Jennifer and Ed Philyaw are greeting, Dotty Armstrong is worship leader, David Anderson is monitoring the sound system, and David and Francine Walls are guiding the Easter Egg Hunt after worship. Thanks to Susan Watts for the supplies and prizes.

Bring a flower to decorate the cross, and a few extra are helpful for those who are visiting and unfamiliar with our tradition of flowering the cross.

Mary Lou Weitzel and Jane Roys are hosting fellowship time, but it is a potluck! Hot cross buns and any finger foods are welcome.

The minutes form the Church Council meeting on Monday are available.

A flyer for the April 22 Saturday Spiritual Retreat led by Marci Scott-Weis is available. Deadline to sign up is Sunday.

[04/08/17]   Friends,

There is sad news to share. Hans Mueller died in his sleep last night. He had been in the hospital overnight a little over a week ago, but this was still unexpected. Hans would have turned 99 this coming July. A memorial service will be scheduled at Horizon House, where Hans and Mary have lived for the past four years, after Easter and probably sometime in early May.

Mary may be contacted at home.

Blessings,

Tim

Friends,

The book club meets on Saturday at 10:30 am in the Nursery to discuss Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly, and led by Karen Delaney.

This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday. There will be a time to wave branches during the children's time as long as you bring things to wave! Jane and Charlie Roys are greeting, David Anderson is worship leader and monitoring the sound system, and Erin Raney is hosting fellowship time. There are choir rehearsals both before (10:30 am) and after worship.

[03/31/17]   Friends,

For those who are participating, Saturday is the April Fool's Dinner! The meal begins at 6:00 pm and the doors to the Sanctuary will be open at 5:30 pm. Be thinking of requests for David Little, our pianist! There is free childcare available. If you have not RSVP'd for childcare, please contact Judi duNann directly. The AMAZING menu is attached and it includes gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegetarian options.

There are two free dinner tickets available. The person who bought them now cannot attend. If someone wants them please contact me directly.

And if some folk could plan to stay aftewards to help return the Sanctuary to a Sunday morning set up, that would be terrific!

Sunday is a child-friendly worship service with Carol Banach, Tim Devine, and Gus Stange-Tregear being the worship leaders. There is no church school. Sharon James and Francine Walls are greeting, David Anderson is monitoring the sound system, and Jane and Charlie Roys are hosting fellowship time.

It is also our turn for the Sunday Dinner. We are working the first (cooking) shift, from 2:00 pm until around 5:30 pm. If you can help please contact Chris Knutsen.

Next Tuesday, Carol Banach is playing the organ at a noon concert at Trinity Parish downtown (609 Eighth Ave). More info (free parking) - www.trinityseattle.org. Contact me if you are interested in going together.

The April newsletter is available at http://www.stpucc.org/community/newsletters/2017-04.

Prayers for Bettie and Danny Lucas, Hans Mueller, and Paul Withington.

[03/24/17]   Friends,

This week a new gate was installed at the top of the stairs in the lobby that matches the existing railing. This is the last of the security upgrades we requested!

On Sunday Mary Lou Weitzel is greeting, Judie Altizer is worship leader, David Anderson is monitoring the (new!) sound system, Tricia Lovely is leading church school, and the Scott-Weis family is hosting fellowship time. In addition to coins for the Heifer Project we are also participating in the One Great Hour of Sharing special mission offering. https://d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/unitedchurchofchrist/pages/13938/attachments/original/1482182072/Slimsert_2017_UCC-E.pdf

After worship and fellowship time all are welcome to help set up the Sanctuary for the April Fool's dinner the following Saturday. Tickets are still available for the dinner ($50). Childcare is offered (free - but an RSVP is requested) with Judi duNann. There is scholarship help available for the ticket cost. Please see me if interested - deadline is Sunday.

We have found and bought new dishwasher racks (the old ones did not survive the smoke damage) and it would be good to have a practice run with the dishwasher before next Saturday!

Francine Walls finished the Church Council minutes last week but I held them back because I wanted the peanut butter cookies for Trina Banks to be a surprise. Intrigued? The minutes are available.

Contact Marci-Scott Weis about the spring spiritual retreat (April 22).

Blessings,

Tim

[03/17/17]   Friends,

We have had two inspections this week - one by the city and one with the insurance contractor. We passed, so to speak - no surprises. Although there is still a great deal to sort out with insurance over cost, payments, depreciation, fire and non-fire (security upgrade) expenses, and so on.

Today the new permanent sanctuary speaker system was installed!

The Book Club meets on Saturday at 10:30 am in the Nursery to discuss Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and led by Mary Mueller.

On Sunday Jennifer and Ed Philyaw are greeting, Trina Banks and Jed Stange-Tregear are worship leaders, Sharon James is leading church school, David Anderson is monitoring the sound system, Cynthia Miller and Ruth Velasco-Schmitz are hosting fellowship time, and I am closing the building in the evening.

Plan on staying for fellowship time as it is Trina Banks' last Sunday with us, and our chance to say thank-you!

There are still tickets available for the April Fools dinner ($50). Childcare is offered (free - but an RSVP is requested) with Judi duNann. There is scholarship help available for the ticket cost. Please see me if interested.

Contact Marci-Scott Weis about the spring spiritual retreat (April 22).

Blessings,

Tim
