Sewing room chit-chat dangerous? Could we be planning an uprising through secret terms such as gussets and hem stitch? This article printed in the New York Pioneer periodical on January 23rd,1841 has something to say about the matter.

Dior

With a network of specialist ateliers on which to call, whose expertise corresponds to that of Dior’s, Atelier Ollier in Paris was given the task of embellishing one of the dresses in the Autumn-Winter 2018-2019 Haute Couture collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri. A toile de Jouy motif was hand-painted on six panels of organza then pembroidered with tiny knotted flowers made from nearly 900 meters of silk thread. Explore the making of this dress and uncover more on.dior.com/coutureaw1819.

Couture is the place where dreams in fashion become reality, an especially apt description as the Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2018 collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri was inspired by Surrealism, and the duality of a world that exists between reality and dreams. And in the family-run Hurel atelier in Paris, age-old savoir-faire is exercised in the hand painting and embroidering of a sigh-inducing dress called 'Songe' which, suitably enough, also means 'dream'! Every year Ker, a Black Hmong woman, creates new clothes for her family from scratch. These clothes are intricate, unique and beautiful and take the entire year to make. Ker shares the process she goes through in this video. Do you think you'd be able to make your clothes from seed to stitching? 🤷

Beetle wings. Not thread

The detail on this dress is breathtaking, but the sad truth is that 5,000 beetle wings and parts of wings were used to decorate it. Visit #FashionedfromNature to learn more: https://goo.gl/znHvbx

The Cut

You’ll probably recognize MARIMEKKO's iconic prints and textiles, but the women who shaped it are less known.

Salama and I were talking about one of the worst days of our marriage and believe it or not one of them was actually our wedding day, we kept laughing at how it was supposed to be the most beautiful day of our lives but ended up being a day we didn't really get to enjoy.

In the Arab culture weddings are a big deal and a lot is spent on making these weddings a big deal, a big deal for other people that is. Our wedding wasn't something we wanted but it was the norm in both our families, and communities, so we pretty much played by the rules and spent all this money making it happen, money we didn't need to be spending, money we could have spent on something better.

If it were up to us we would have had a small wedding, on the beach somewhere, with family and friends. We would have focused on each other and what we both wanted, because a wedding day is very similar to a marriage in the sense that you should care about making each other happy first, about you both being comfortable, about you both creating a day that's perfect for each other, and not worry about what others think.

Enjoy the video!!

Felling, padding, sleeving, invisible stitching, buttonholing... Just a few of the processes that go into making a coat, demonstrated in 1923.

Historical Garments

Here is a beautiful 1895 Ukranian wedding dress with a good story. It was designed and made in Ukraine by the mother of the bride, Channah Kozak, who started working on it in 1882. Her eye sight was bad so the bride, Sara Kozak, helped her finish it. The family then immigrated to America in the early 1900s. The granddaughter of Sara, Jane Sarah Cooperman, wore this dress on her wedding day too. Worn in Ukraine and America, what a trip. " Bodice (a) of red and blue silk crepe, heavily embroidered and trimmed with lace. High collar; concealed snap closure at proper left shoulder and neck. Full set-in sleeves taper to fitted cuffs. Attached full-length silk twill petticoat. Apron (b) features the same red and blue stripes and embroidery motifs. Slightly gathered into blue waistband, which extends to tie at back. Cotton lace ruffle at sides and hem. Falls to knee. Skirt (c) of light brown silk jacquard; full; two-inch self-fabric waistline; floor-length." Object Number 1990.797a-c. Chicago History Museum.
