Say Her Name: Marielle Franco, a Brazilian Politician Who Fought for Women and the Poor, Was Killed. Her Death Sparked Protests Across Brazil

Her death touched so many people that supporters organized vigils and protests in more than 20 cities across Brazil. Most of these protests were against the genocide of black people in Brazil. For Afro-Brazilians, Franco proved that a black person from a favela could be educated, have dignity and also fight against the social injustice that black Brazilians suffer from every day. For women, she proved that they could overcome sexism and machismo in Brazil. But her death is hitting Afro-Brazilian women, who suffer the most from Brazil’s violent, racist and sexist society, the hardest. Editor’s note: This story has been updated.

Amazing opportunity

In 2011, Immigrant youth leaders were moved by the US Senate’s failure to pass the federal DREAM Act to create a way of sustaining and developing future leaders in the immigrant rights movement. The result was the inaugural Dream Summer Fellowship, a national program that:

• Empowers immigrant youth to be the next generation of social justice leaders through leadership development, movement building, and on-the-ground experience in social justice organizations
• Creates safe and healing spaces for immigrant youth to connect and build with one another
• Promotes an intersectional, cross-racial, and intergenerational approach to social justice that addresses the needs of immigrant communities.

Participants are placed within social justice based organizations for 10 weeks and work closely with their host organization to incorporate and strengthen the role of immigrant issues alongside the organization’s social justice work.

Dream Summer Fellows receive a $5,000 fellowship for their participation in the fellowship, leadership and professional development trainings, and become part of a national alumni network of 600+ individuals.

Over the summer, fellows engage and lead social justice efforts by aligning the call or immigrant rights issues alongside the unique challenges of queer and transgender communities, Asian and Pacific Islander communities, Black immigrant communities, the ongoing mass incarceration and criminalization of people of color, worker rights, and health care access for all.

Take look at Dream Summer 2017!
