Ursula K. Le Guin, Acclaimed for Her Fantasy Fiction, Is Dead at 88

farewell, UKG. thank you for the tribute, Taylor Brady: "Sad news to share today -- one of the few writers whom I've read avidly as a child, adolescent and adult, and to the extent that my disorderly writer's mind has a shape, one of its shapers. One of my first points of introduction, and lasting source, for experiencing (not just "learning about") possibilities of feminism, anti-colonialism, ecological perspectives, and anarchism. A great teller of tales, and a great teacher in the requisite cold eye one sometimes needs to cast on the power of tales."

nytimes.com Ms. Le Guin brought literary elegance and a feminist sensibility to science fiction and fantasy tales, drawing millions of readers around the world.

61 YEARS AGO TODAY, December 12 1956, Philip Whalen gave his first reading for the Poetry Center — on a double bill with Lawrence Ferlinghetti. PW's very first public reading had been 14 months before, at the subsequently legendary Six Gallery reading w/ celebrated friends assembled.

We've saved the tape. You can listen here:
