Mission: Mission Statement The Asteria Foundation donates funds to worthy causes so their work directly benefits the people of the world who most need it.

[10/01/12]   We are very happy to announce that The Asteria Foundation has sent their first field worker to monitor and evaluate their project in Liberia, one of many projects around the globe. The International Projects Coordinator traveled to Monrovia to meet with The More Than Me Foundation that we are collaborating with. We take girls off the street and put them in school, in the slum of West Point. The project is amazing and truly makes a difference in the girls' lives by giving them a chance to go to school, learn to read and write, and have a choice for their future.
Pictures will come soon!

Thank you to all who support us in our mission of fighting the cycle of poverty worldwide!

[02/07/12]   Update for Senegal well project: The well was started on Saturday February 4th, 2012. The well is being built outside of Touba, in central Senegal. We will be posting pictures soon for the update!

The Mercy Orphanage Foundation and Old Age Home is located in the East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh in India. The orphanage is run by RMP doctor Chinnam Naidu and his wife, Dhanalaxmi. They have two children, a son Suresh Naidu and a daughter Anusha. Over fifty children and 5 elderly persons are cared for at this moment by Mercy Ministries Orphanage.
Chinnam Naidu converted to Christianity from his Hindu background, and has over 8 years’ experience with servicing the poor and needy. After the tsunami of 2004 that destroyed many villages and peoples’ lives, Chinnam went to Orissa state to help them. He started a medical clinic there, and started helping the people who were injured. He understood the devastating nature of the catastrophe, since so many people had lost their homes, their property, and the lives of their loved ones. So many people were crying on the roads, and so much sadness was felt in this area. Nearly 10,000 died in this area. Everyone’s story was different, but the sadness was felt by all. Many children lost their parents during the catastrophe and became orphans. Chinnam thought of starting an orphanage for these children, but was uncertain about how to start it. Finally, he started the orphanage with 10 children, and was supporting them financially from his income, and at this time the orphanage was not yet registered. As the word spread, people starting helping Chinnam, and he was able to register the organization as a non-profit in the name of Mercy Ministries. He closed down the clinic he was operating, in order to dedicate his time to helping the children, and providing them with an education for their future. Today, there are over 50 girls and boys, and some elderly, but there are still hundreds of children who roam the streets. The teachers are all volunteers, who also dedicate their time to helping the children in this area.
Chinnam Naidu has many plans for the future of these children, including buying enough land to be able to build school buildings, a kitchen, and land to cultivate for food. By buying his own land, Chinnam would be able to reduce the cost of rent, and provide shelter to orphans and poor children. Chinnam also plans to build a chicken farm, which would help support the organization. His main focus for the children is to provide them with a free education, and safe place to live.
In India, many children live in poverty and are forced to work to help support the family. Many children became orphans after the tsunami, but many children are also sold and forced in child labor. When a child works under these conditions, they work for long hours every day, getting paid only a meager $15-$20 a month. Many girls are also forced to become child maids, in which they wash and clean for the house in order to receive a little food to support them for the day. Chinnam finds children who have worked in various factories, stone crushing mines, gardens, shops, transportation, fields, taking care of livestock and even in brothel homes. Many children are troubled and hurt from forced labor, child abuse and poverty. When Chinnam sees a child being abused, he does all he can to go where that child is, and bring him/her to Mercy Ministries Orphanage. There, the children are provided with daily food, education, clothing, shelter and good medical support for any physical or psychological needs they may have. Chinnam knows that there are hundreds of children who are still in need of help, and one day, he will be able to help those children too.
Chinnam is deeply moved by the stories these children have, and is working to provide a safe place to learn and live for these children. He dislikes child labor, and the people involved in hiring those children. Chinnam Naidu and his wife have big hearts, and do everything they can to provide the children with education for a brighter future. Chinnam says that “Today they are small, but one day they will grow and become good citizens. I think they too can support the organization to help many other children.”
Every child is an opportunity for creating a better future. Mercy Ministries Orphanage does this every day by providing poor and homeless children with the tools and knowledge they need to be able to make a change in their future.

Drought returns to West Africa’s Sahel, bringing hunger as crisis looms

What actions can we take in West Africa's looming drought to avoid the thousands of threatened deaths lost in past droughts?

washingtonpost.com DAKAR, Senegal — For the third time in the past decade, drought has returned to the arid, western shoulder of Africa, bringing hunger to millions. Aid agencies are warning that if action is not taken now, the region known as the Sahel could slip into crisis.

[01/18/12]   We have started the projects of building a well, and providing beds/mosquito nets to the small community of Tawa Fall, outside of Thies, Senegal. The beds have been ordered, and will be delivered in 21 days. The well will start construction on Monday. We will be posting more pictures to keep you up-to-date with the projects!

General information

Our Vision The Asteria Foundation’s vision isn’t full of flowery words or lofty speech. That’s because we’re about solving the problem, not talking about them. We envision a world where poverty has been conquered, not through endless donations, but through educating the victims of poverty and giving them the chance to start their own businesses and become self sufficient. Through key partnerships with existing foundations and organizations, we believe that reaching our goals is possible in our lifetime.
