Information Technology Professional Development Pilot

The Information Technology (IT) Professional Development Pilot is a cooperative effort between the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (Airports Authority) and Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) designed to recruit, develop, hire and retain the next generation of highly trained IT personnel for professional staff level positions at the Airports Authority. Participation in the pilot will provide the opportunity to take part in real-world projects and obtain valuable work experience. The pilot provides mentoring and learning opportunities to help participants to develop technical skills, network with Airports Authority employees, and learn more about the aviation industry.

The selected participants will complete a paid two year structured training program while continuing their IT studies/major at an accredited four year college or university. After 24 months of successful performance, training, and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/IT, the candidate will be eligible for non-competitive placement into a permanent career staff positon in the IT department.

Eligibility

Applicants must have an Associate’s Degree in computer science/IT with a minimum 2.85 GPA from an accredited college or university.

Process to Identify Candidates

The Northern Virginia Community College Department of Information Systems Technology will identify candidates that meet the eligibility requirements and provide the Airports Authority’s Office of Human Resources with their resumes. The Airports Authority will review the resumes and identify candidates to be interviewed.

Compensation and Work Hours

Selected participants will be hired at a starting rate of $12.62 per hour and paid every two weeks. Work hours will be designed to be flexible to accommodate their bachelor degree programs. Retention in the program is subject to acceptable academic performance and job performance.

Tuition Reimbursement

Selected participants will be provided two years of tuition reimbursement to complete a bachelors Computer Science/IT degree from an accredited college or university.

Selected participants must complete a four year Computer Science/IT degree program within 24 months (extensions may be granted on a case-by-case basis) of entering the pilot. In accordance with the Airports Authority Tuition Reimbursement Program (TAP) the participants may be reimbursed for up to $5,000 per year for a maximum of two years, for successfully completing credit-bearing courses to obtain their four year IT degree. None of the timeframe requirements outlined in the TAP Policy to access the funds, such as requiring 12 months of continuous service before starting a course, timeframe to apply (no sooner than August 1 of the year prior to the start of the course), etc., apply to this pilot. Participants must request tuition reimbursement within 30 days of course completion.

Agreement

Selected participants entering the pilot will complete and sign an agreement to commit to continue working in the IT department of the Airports Authority for a minimum of two years from the date they complete their four year degree program.

Work Locations

Positions are located at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport or Washington Dulles International Airport.

Application for Employment

Selected participants will be required to complete the Airports Authority’s online Application for Employment. In order to receive full consideration for the pilot position(s), applicants must completely fill out the identified sections of the application.

Background Check

Selected Information Technology applicants are required to undergo a background check. Those who pass are made Final Offers

The NOVA Loudoun Campus Food Pantry is open to all members of the Loudoun campus community – students, faculty, and staff – who are in need of assistance with food (and even some personal care) supplies. We are grateful to work alongside Loudoun Hunger Relief for support of the pantry.

The Food Pantry is open Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Tuesday/Thursday from 8:30am to 7:30pm. Those in need of food assistance can visit the Pantry (please bring a NOVA ID card) in Reynolds Building, LR 249I or call 703-404-7310 to request food. And yes, we also welcome non-perishable food and personal care donations.

It was time for celebration in the Spanish 102 class taught by Maria Nieto-Shahsavarian at NOVA's Reston Center.

NOVA Student Ira Dreyfuss completed a separate Rosetta Stone Spanish program online after two years. Wishing to share his happiness (in Spanish), he brought to class a cake iced with a photo of the Rosetta Stone login page - celebrating that he won't have to see it anymore. Dreyfuss is auditing, and excelling at, the NOVA course under Virginia's tuition waiver program for senior citizens.
