LVHS chapter of UN Girl Up; advocating for gender equality on a global scale.
The United Nations has this amazingly cool program called Girl Up, and it's all about gender equality on a global scale. Girl Up works through the UN to fight issues like child marriage, domestic abuse, women's health, voting rights, and education through lobbying, fundraising, volunteering, mission trips, and raising awareness. Girl Up has been implemented as a club in over 1,000 schools across the country, using the passionate minds of teenagers to actualize gender equality world wide. Girl Up clubs are run directly through the UN, and each club is registered through Girl Up online. The Girl Up organization sends curriculum, planning tools, activities, and fundraisers, basically taking care of everything. A registered club is required to host at least five Girl Up activities (which can range anything from fundraising to congressional call-ins, to holding a International Day of Girl at school on October 11th), interact with the Girl Up community (online or through going to talks in DC, hold meetings, etc), and participate in the UN administered fundraising challenges. Girl Up clubs play a very vital role in the community, creating a community of equality on a international scale.
Mission: Create a community of equality within the LVHS community and implement gender equality on a global scale.
While (some of) the United States was not ready for the first woman president....
Oregon was ready for the first bisexual woman governor, Kate Brown
Illinois was ready for the first Thai-American woman senator, Tammy Duckworth
Minnesota was ready for the first Somali-American woman legislator, Ilhan Omar for State Representative - 60B (a former refugee as well)
Don't be discouraged. Be inspired. 🙆

girlup.org An educated girl can change the world. But in many developing countries a prohibitively long – and unsafe – walk to school prevents girls from completing their education. In Guatemala, 6 out of 10 indigenous girls drop out of school by age 15. That’s why Girl Up is expanding its successful SchoolCyc…
November is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and its the most common cancer exclusively seen in males. Prostate cancer can be super dangerous and even though this might not seem like a Girl Up issue, healthcare and wellness definitely is. As the Try Guy video says, individual wellness isn't looked at as traditionally masculine. Changing, reforming, and breaking gender roles is a large part of the gender equality movement!!! Health isn't exclusive to any gender, and various cancer exams should definitely be things to keep in mind, for all people!
