Mooresville Arts is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that has been a staple of the Mooresville community for more than 60 years. The mission of Mooresville Arts is to be an advocate for the artist and to serve as an artistic and cultural resource for the Mooresville and Lake Norman community. Mooresville Arts Gallery is located in the Historic Mooresville, NC Train Depot. The Mooresville Artist Guild (aka Mooresville Arts) was founded over sixty years ago by six artists: John McConell, Lucille Lipe, Verla Williford, Leonard Ham, Lonnie Cox and Augustine Brown as they gathered together in the basement of the war memorial building to paint and exchange ideas with their fellow artists. They met to paint wherever they could get the space. In 1957, the small group took a class taught by one of the foremost artists of the state-Ralph Herring. As a result of this class, more artists joined the group. On November 17, 1966, numbering about 20, the group known as the Mooresville Artist Guild was organized. The Guild continued to increase in membership numbers, and on March 6, 1978, the Mooresville Town Board voted to allow the Mooresville Artist Guild to use the town-owned Southern Railway Depot. The Guild became a "quasi-municipal service" and has worked since that time to develop the former Depot into a visual arts gallery for the area. Working with the Town of Mooresville, members and supporters of the Guild have remodeled the building to include heated and air conditioned galleries, meeting and classroom space. The Guild also became associated with the Iredell Arts Council and is supported in part by the Grassroots Art Program of the North Carolina Arts Council. On May 24, 1982 the Guild was incorporated in North Carolina as a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to provide art and art appreciation for members and the general public. In a ruling dated January 30, 1997 the Internal Revenue Service determined the Mooresville Artist Guild is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) effective April 10, 1996. This means that gift contributions (including dues) are deductible as provided in section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. MAG Federal Id and IRS Status/Information. Currently membership and supporters number over 225.

🌟MEMBER OF THE MONTH🌟

Peter O’Reilly 👨🏻‍🎨

“Photography has been an interest of mine for much of my life. I even had a Polaroid when they first came out, as well as one of those little square-shaped, clicky, plastic 110 cartridge cameras. Of course, my photographs were taken then just to record events and places, and collect for albums. Such photographic education as I have had, comprised short courses of a week or less. They included black and white photography, printing and developing;a weekend workshop regarding composition; a weekend course at the John C Campbell Folk School; a weekend Road Scholar course held at Montreat College studying a variety of aspects of photography. I have exhibited, over a number of years, photographs at the Mooreville Arts exhibitions, and the ‘Home-Grown’ Annual event in Cornelius.

Very briefly, my present photographic interests revolve around experimenting with natural phenomena, light and water, and representing the usual in unusual ways. The backbones of my photo editing have been Adobe Lightroom and Topaz, but I have recently delved into the world of Photoshop and find its possibilities fascinating.
I am beginning to regard myself as something of a rule breaker, becoming less satisfied with photographs just being a representation of truth at a given moment. I am not so sure that the camera never lies!! I think the various programmes I use are the equivalent of the different tools that other artists use in their given genre. Anything a painter can do to a canvas I can do to a photograph.”

See the work of our 3 featured artists, Ric Erkes, Chris McIntosh and Julia Lawing. We also have a group exhibit titled “Beyond Poems and Paintings”, a collaborative effort between Mooresville Arts and Charlotte Writers' Club.

Our gallery hours for September will be Thursday and Friday 12-4pm and Saturday 10am-2pm, or by Appointment (email [email protected] to set up an appt).
These shows are on display now through Thursday, September 24th.

You've heard it before "drawing skills are vital to your art'. This is valid whether you want to paint or produce your art only with pencil and paper. And, it is a skill you can learn!Drawing is learning to see. We look but we do not always see what is actually there. The natural tendency can be to draw what you think something looks like.
