Eastfield College Scanning Electron Microscope Lab

The SEM Lab is located in C350. Please come by and see what we are doing.

Eastfield SEM Lab is available for use by students and faculty working in the STEM fields. We support work at all levels.

Mission: To support work at all levels in the STEM fields by making research quality imaging equipment available.

One of my favorite images of our Christmas tree.

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree

Happy Holidays from the Eastfield College SEM Lab.

What if we put a Christmas tree in the scanning electron microscope? Can't - it's too big, but we can look at its stems and leaves. Happy Holidays from the S...

Scanning Electron Microscope Blog: A Magnificent Bug - Part II

Here is part II of the Magnificent Bug. This time, SEM images.

Scanning Electron Microscope Blog: A Magnificent Bug - Part 1

On Monday one of the biology professors brought in a very cool bug. Here is a blog post with some images. Even if you don't like bugs, this guy is interesting.

Fast Food Problems

Thank goodness for editing. Here is a compilation of what doesn't make it into a video.

Just me, my camera, and I. Sometimes things don't go smoothly. Some outtakes from the making of Fast Food: Up Close and Personal. (I actually made this one d...

Fast Food Up Close and Personal

In conjunction with the common book, the SEM Lab takes a look at some local fast food items.

What does fast food really look like - and what is in it. The SEM Lab at Eastfield College takes a look at french fries, tater tots, and onion rings.

Scanning Electron Microscope Blog: Fall Colors - On a Small Scale

With temperatures in the 80's it doesn't seem much like fall, but the trees are telling a different story. Enjoy some fall color from a single tree here on the Eastfield campus.

My wife has a green thumb. When she found out that I had a great, east facing window in my office she "encouraged" me to put in a shelf and take in some plants. Though technically, these are only images I shot today with my point and shoot camera, I was so pleased with my now blooming Christmas cactus that I just had to post them.

Scanning Electron Microscope Blog: A Jumping Spider

More images of this jumping spider on my blog.

I know it is a leg, but HAIRY!!!

Timeline Photos

The SEM Lab has been busy and so have I. After spending two days showing the portable SEM to students at Forney High School (12 presentations in 2 days) the SEM traveled to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History for an event sponsored by the American Chemical Society and to Bishop Lynch High School.

Now I am back in the lab for a while which means more images!!

Eastfield College using Scanning Electron Microscopes for STEM research

Here is a video that shows one of our SEMs. It was filmed and produced by your Media Department here at Eastfield and will give you a brief look at the portable SEM I take all over the metroplex.

Eastfield College has two scanning electron microscopes located in our Scanning Electron Microscope Lab. One of these microscope is the TM-1000. This powerfu...

[10/30/12]   The SEM Lab has been extremely busy. Last Saturday I took the SEM to the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Talked to lots of folks.

Tomorrow it is off to Forney High School for two days of talking to students about the SEM and cell structure.

Next Saturday the SEM will be at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas for a STEM conference. Unfortunately, it means there won't be many new images being made for the next week or so.

Scanning Electron Microscope Blog: A Kidney Stone - OUCH!!

One of my colleagues here at Eastfield brought me something very personal - a kidney stone. So far this is the most unusual thing I have imaged. The scanning electron micrographs look like something from another planet. Unusual and a little scary at the same time.

Take time to look down and see the flowers

I just posted a short video on the late blooming aster. Hope you enjoy it.

Texas summers are brutal, but whenever this little aster appears I know that fall is close behind. For teachers - a quick, and hopefully painless, introducti...

Scanning Electron Microscope Blog

The SEM lab has a blog where work is posted. Feel free to copy, use, or modify any of our images as long as you credit Eastfield.

A photo from a dissecting scope showing the anther full of pollen

Pollen grains at 1000x. Each pollen is about 25 microns long. (This is the male gametophyte for you bio nerds out there.)

Anther of the flower with lots of pollen.

SEM version of the center of the flower.

I took this photo yesterday outside of the C building.

Currently working on images of the Late Aster which is blooming on campus even as we speak.

See what those tiny black ants you see everywhere actually look like.

[10/09/12]   So sorry about the delay in getting this page up and running. I will admit that I am a total novice at facebook and have put off learning about it, but the time has come.

Image #1 for week of August 27th.
Magnification = 4,100x
Distance between marks on scale = 1 micron

Post your guesses as a comment.

Check back for hints on Tuesday and the answer on Wednesday.
