The Goddard School

Welcome to the Goddard School in Leesburg VA.

Welcome to The Goddard School! Our goal is to be a resource for families and a community where parents can share information and learn from each other.

Today’s independent moments activity, “Handy Animals,” is perfect for children to engage with while parents focus on their tasks for the day. Turn an outline of a hand into a zany animal! Make more animals with outlines of your fingers or thumbprints.
You’ll need paper, crayons, markers and your imagination. Take a picture, and share it with family members and friends. Don’t forget to check out our blog for some more fun independent moments! reptn.io/cBTQSeAYAsA

Creative art motivates and engages children in learning, stimulates memory, facilitates understanding, enhances symbolic communication, promotes relationships and provides an avenue for building competence. Encourage art at home as a family activity. Get out the arts and crafts materials and create projects together, create drawings on the computer, or be creative with recycled materials. Your children learn a lot while you create wonderful family memories.

When you need a moment or two and you’d like your child to do something fun, ask your child to try one of these instant playful learning activities. reptn.co/sBGNAekcAWA

Does your toddler carry a favorite stuffed animal or blankie? Their attachment to this beloved object is normal—and can even be helpful! These “lovies” allow your little one to soothe him or herself in stressful moments and provide comfort or courage. The feeling of security is so important for a child during the transitional time of toddlerhood.

As families schedules continue to be impacted, we’ve developed some independent moment activities that children can do on their own. Today’s activity is one of our favorites called “Does It Fly?”
Create something out of paper and cardboard that will fly! You can decorate it, too. Try making two things and testing which one flies the farthest. You’ll need paper, cardboard, crayons, markers and scissors. Check out more independent moments activities on our blog! reptn.io/cBTQSeAYAsA

This Sunday is Mother's Day and we want to wish all moms a very happy Mother’s Day! Everyone at The Goddard School sees firsthand your love for your child, the hard work you put in to make every day great, the hugs and smiles and all the little gestures that show you care. Nothing shows how special you are more than your child’s joy.

Attention parents! Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and the most special gifts are those made by the hands of your tiny tots. Here’s a craft idea to help your child create a special keepsake for mom. Check out the full instructions on our blog: reptn.io/AAIAacMctBb

This Earth Day, go outside and enjoy nature with your children. Spending time outside allows for the freedom to explore; roll in the grass, stomp in the mud, touch the frog and splash in the puddles!

Growing a garden is a great way to make an environmental difference. If you are limited for space try container gardening or participate in a community garden. Even toddlers can help plant, tend and harvest. Recycling compostable garbage including potato peels and eggshells in a compost bin is an additional way to enrich your garden and respect the planet.

Giving children a head start with money skills is crucial. Through dramatic play, children can pretend they are going to the store, handling money in a restaurant or saving money in a bank. Use stories, math games and other activities, like starting a piggy bank or taking a trip to the bank, to teach children about money. Learning about money and money management early in life will help your child be more responsible in the future.

It's time to start planning for Summer! Our series of interactive summer camp themes and activities make us a great option for a fun, educational Summer.

Reading aloud to children encourages association with happiness, love and enjoyment. All of this can lead to a child’s greater interest in reading and can result in a larger vocabulary and better literary skills. #NationalReadingMonth

Learning language is a natural process. Introducing young children to second languages such as Spanish, French and sign language encourages brain development. Second languages also help celebrate cultural diversity and create an understanding of the written word. The earlier a child is exposed to another language, the likelier the child will become fluent in that language.

Our children come to us with a fresh look at life, full of uniqueness, purity and innocence. Consider what our children can teach us, or remind us of, if we only let them. Our children can remind us what love is—true, unconditional love. They can remind us to look for joy in the smallest places. They can remind us to laugh and to laugh often—it lowers stress and it’s good for the soul. What does your child teach you?

Visit us from February 17th to February 22nd to see how we use our play-based curriculum to introduce STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) concepts to help children develop a passion for STEAM learning. According to researchers, imaginary friends may appear due to a change in your child’s life, for example, a new sibling or a new home. They could also be your child’s way of learning to express his emotions and understand roles and relationships. As a result, your child may blame his naughty behavior on his imaginary friend. Do not make a big deal out of it. Simply explain to your child why the behavior is unacceptable.

"Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us." - Hal Borland. Happy New Year!
