Encompassing over 1,000 acres of gardens, fields, lawns and wooded areas, Morven Park hosts over 250,000 visitors each year who attend equestrian events, special activities, guided tours and educational programs.
Purchased in 1903 by Westmoreland and Marguerite Davis, Morven Park encompasses over 1,000 acres of gardens, fields, lawns and wooded areas as well as three museums. Honoring Mrs. Davis' vision, the site now hosts over 250,000 visitors each year who attend equestrian events, special activities, guided tours and educational programs. Open All Year, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day Historic Gardens, Turkey Hill Farm, & Hiking Trails are open every day. Morven Park relies on donations from friends like you. Be a part of this special place by making a donation today at MorvenPark.org/DonateNow.
Operating as usual
On this October #MuseumMonday we address one of the most frequently asked questions we hear during tours--- “Is the mansion haunted?”.
While we love a good ghost story, staff have never found evidence that ghosts exist at Morven Park. However, since Loudoun County did not have its first hospital until 1912, births, illnesses, and death all occurred at home. The families residing at Morven Park during the 19th century had their fair share of sorrows, with both the unexpected deaths of children following illnesses and the expected passing of elderly family members. Their headstones can be found in the cemeteries of Leesburg, Alexandria, and Baltimore.

Have you ever wondered why we "carry a bride over the threshold"? With a seasonal nod to Halloween, our Events Department is here to explain the spooky and creepy origins behind some of the most beloved wedding traditions.
This one comes from the Dark Ages, when it was thought that brides were very susceptible to evil spirits and possession through the soles of their feet. It was also believed that the threshold of a door was where the line between our world and the underworld was thin, so to be carried over the threshold was to protect the bride from evil. That same line of reasoning is why people sprinkle salt at their doors to keep out the unwanted.

On this #WeddingWednesday we offer a bit of advice to fall brides and bridesmaids-- Don’t forget something to keep you warm as the temperature drops after sundown. We suggest a cashmere cardigan in the same color as your bridesmaids’ dresses or a vintage blazer to drape over your shoulders. What is your favorite way to keep warm when all dressed up?

For this #MuseumMonday, take a look at this metal sculpture found in the Davis Mansion at Morven Park. Representing the Buddhist deity Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, its square face and body proportion suggests that the sculpture was casted sometime after the 17th century. The deity was widely popular among East Asian women due to its power of promising family health, producing sons and protecting women from childbirth. If you look closely, you can still see some remnants of the gilded overlay on the sculpture.
