Our thoughts are powerful. They shape the way we interpret our reality, thereby shaping reality, as well. Most people have little to no control over their thoughts, which results in little to no control over their words and actions. So how does one gain control of the mind and thoughts? Yoga, and when I say yoga, I mean pranayama (breathwork) and meditation, too. These practices teach you how to observe your thoughts without attachment, which is the first step to gaining control of the mind. Focus and concentration are also key skills, and pranayama is especially good at helping one cultivate these. All of these practices are taught in my new program, and everything I teach has scientifically proven benefits. In this program, I work with you one-on-one, just like yoga was originally taught, to help you create the reality you choose. You CAN be happy. You CAN be abundant. You CAN be peaceful. Let me show you how💗

Criticism- we can get a little bristly about it. This perspective helps - so clear and simple .

How to receive criticism

When others criticize you, there are two things to think of. First, “That’s the way they look at me and that’s what they see.” Give them that freedom. They may not see the other, better side. Feel sorry for them. Leave it at that.

The other thing to think about is, “Yes, that person is like a mirror. Through him or her I see my defects.” You go in front of a mirror to clean the dirty spots from your face. In the same way, this person is revealing your dirty spots. Thank the person and work on it. Then you will even look for criticism, because you can get help from that. If people don’t criticize you, you will never know your own defects. If you see it in this light, you will never be angered by that. But if the mirror continues to show your dirty spot and you become defensive and punch it, you lose your mirror, you lose your fist and you still have the dirty spot.

[08/18/18]   Thank you to everyone for helping me to celebrate "graduation day" and sharing your experiences. OM shanthi, peace.

On this day 26 years ago, I graduated from Yoga Teacher Training at Satchidananda Ashram Yogaville. I had no plans to teach, but while talking on a pay phone in Middleburg, (pre cell phone days), an art gallery owner overheard that I was a yoga teacher. And after the call, she enthusiastically offered her space for a class. During my training, we were told, "Never miss an opportunity to serve" and so I began to teach and my appreciation and respect for yoga has just increased over the years. it has been a wonderful journey not only because of yoga's greatness, but made even better because of the greatness of the sangha (students/community) who have participated in class, some for over 20 years. Thank you and of course.

This is the view from my kitchen window in spring. The awareness to stop, take a deep breath and gaze out the window is a moment of joy, the kind of joy which cultivates gratitude and santosha, the Sanskrit word for contentment. I was pulled by the scent and sight of flowers' fireworks to run out in pajamas,barefoot through the rain-soaked grass to bring some of this prana/vitality in the house. Where have all the flowers gone? Transition/change is not always gradual as Mother Nature has shown us from this past week of 75+ degree temperatures to today’s (March 15) single digit windchills. How do we adjust to the ups and downs which life brings? And this Saturday, March 18, 9:30 - 11:30 am, I will co-teach a 2 hour yoga practice to address some of the causes of discord such as fear, anger and indifference. This is a meditative practice to settle the mind, breath and body for a progression toward inner stillness, a deep connection with the present moment, letting go of what keeps us from experiencing equanimity and harmony.

I hope you have been enjoying the long hours of daylight, abundant rain, heat and humidity of summer. We've had meteor showers, fireflies and lively thunderstorms to entertain and wake us up this year. On a calm day such as this one, we don't really think too much about weather preparations, we just go along, having fun, doing errands, etc. But let the cell phone "awaken us" with weather alerts, and we spring into action, bringing in patio furniture, the pets, and parking the car in the garage.

In yoga and meditation, a daily practice is the preparation which readies us to ride out any storms which appear whether announced or zooming in like a derecho. Yoga websites, books, dvds and magazines offer a variety of practices to tone and strengthen, to calm and energize, or even cure a hangover. A balanced yoga practice prepares us for anything; we may think we know what is going to happen each day, but we don't – not really. It is worth it to hold the space of moment-to-moment awareness that anything could happen.

Yoga practice does help to maintain muscle strength, balance, bone density, it relieves stress, increases flexibility, lowers blood pressure, etc. But when the body fails, and it eventually does, classic 8-limbed yoga delivers equanimity, inner strength and self-awareness to weather such times. These qualities are developed with a committed daily yoga, pranayama and meditation practice, over long period of time and with enthusiasm, (Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Book 1, Sutra 14). I will be co-teaching an overview of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali on Saturday, September 24 at Loudoun Valley Yoga from 1:30-3:30 PM. This overview is part discussion and part activity and will inform about the underpinnings of yoga practice and show how this classic yoga text is still relevant to today’s yoga students.
