Let's start off this month with something #pawsitive! This week's #PawsitivePost goes to Dr. Young and the team at BVNS Richmond. In these strange times, our team works hard to ensure your pet's health and happiness 🐶💙🐱
Never miss an update from us! Visit www.bvns.net for COVID-19 updates and resources.
#BVNSHappyPatient Learn about Ripken, a happy patient we met before the quarantine:
Ripken presented to BVNS Atlanta on Valentine's Day for being completely paralyzed in all four legs. Dr. Akin performed a neurological exam and recommended an MRI of his neck. The MRI came back consistent with disc disease and spinal cord compression at disc C5-C6. Surgery was performed that day to decompress the spinal cord.
The Gould family were 110% all in with Ripken’s recovery; he already had an appointment for rehab the same week he was discharged from BVNS. This is Ripken at his staple removal appointment. This proud happy boy walked in the door with barely any assistance.
We are so proud of this miracle boy! Keep up the hard work Gould family!
#BVNSHappyPatients Meet Luca! He was diagnosed in August 2018 with meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE). Over the past 2 years, Luca has come to our BVNS Springfield location for cytosar treatments. Since then, he has improved and Dr. Barker said he no longer needs cytosar treatments. This is Luca at his most recent recheck, feeling better than ever! 🐶
Although Luca and his family are moving to Texas soon, we are grateful that we were a part of his journey back to health. We will miss you, Luca!💙
Today we honor and remember those who have made the greatest sacrifice for our country. To all who have served, we thank you! ❤
Happy Tuesday! Meet our #BVNSHappyPatient Apollo! 🐶 Apollo is a 7-year-old Doberman who presented paralyzed and in pain from a severe disk extrusion. He required a 4 space laminectomy and has bravely endured and recovered.
At his 2-week recheck, he could stand and walk with just minimal support. He recovered due to the owner’s and neurologists' dedication. Here is Apollo pictured with Dr. Chen and Dr. Bush. 💙
Keep up the good work, Apollo. 👍😎
#BVNSHappyPatients This little cutie is Riley Lynn, a 5-year-old dachshund, presented to our Woodstock location on April 20th. She was non-ambulatory in her pelvic limbs. Dr. Neary saw Riley, and recommended an MRI to determine the cause of her paresis. The MRI revealed a herniated disc causing severe spinal cord compression. The family opted to pursue surgery hoping to give Riley the best chance at recovery. Dr. Neary performed a hemilaminectomy to remove the disc material and decompress the spinal cord the same day.
On April 30th Riley returned to BVNS for her suture removal and she was walking and looked great! She is bright, happy, and pain-free.
We cannot wait to see Riley at her 6-week progress exam to see how much further along she has come! Thank you Dr. Sobolewski at East Cherokee Veterinary Clinic for your referral. 💙😊
#BVNSQuarantineStories Our Richmond CSR, Rachel, had to keep a close eye on her dog Opie after he ate something he shouldn't have on a walk. When Opie saw her typing, he decided to be a good office buddy and help her out 🐶😎
We are grateful for essential workers like Rachel (and Opie!) 💙
Do you have an office buddy at home? Share a pic of them in the comments below! ✨
Wishing each and every mother a very happy Mother's Day!

Meet Ranger, one of our #BVNSHappyPatients before the quarantine:
Ranger came to BVNS Richmond in September of 2019 after having issues with his hind legs; he was barely able to walk up the stairs. After his MRI, Dr. Higginbotham discovered that he had disk disease at two levels of the spine and he needed surgery.
Dr. Higginbotham performed surgery on Ranger in October, and at his 6-week recheck, he was feeling better than ever. Now, Ranger is spending time with his family and his toy, comfortably walking up and down the stairs again. 🐶💙
Thank you Mechanicsville Animal Hospital for referring Ranger to BVNS!
#BVNSHappyPatients Say hello to this pretty girl, Jitterbug, or as her parents call her, “Gigi.” Jitterbug is an 8-year-old Miniature Dachshund and the posterchild for intervertebral disk disease (IVDD). When Jitterbug came to BVNS of Atlanta in April of 2020, she was unable to walk due to a disk herniation. Here she is two weeks after surgery; she has improved tremendously and was even attempting to walk! Dr. Akin is practicing some social distancing with this happy BVNS patient and her family.
Thank you, Dr. Powell at VCA Briarcliff Animal Hospital for your referral. We look forward to seeing Jitterbug’s improvement at each visit. 🐱🐶
Meet one of our #BVNSHappyPatients who came to our Woodstock location before the quarantine:
This is Bugsy! This adorable boy came to BVNS Woodstock in October for evaluation of his dome-shaped head and episodes ataxia. Dr. Akin’s exam found that Bugsy was a healthy puppy, but he likely had a congenital brain abnormality. An MRI of Bugsy's brain confirmed hydrocephalus ("water on the brain"). Bugsy‘s hydrocephalus is currently being managed with steroids and medications to decrease CSF production and now, he is doing great!
Keep up the good work, Bugsy! 🧡
#WorldVeterinaryDay means so much more during this unprecedented crisis. We are grateful for veterinarians all around the world who are risking their lives to save our pets. To our BVNS family, we see and appreciate all that you do. Thank you! 💙

This handsome boy is Toby! He came to BVNS Atlanta in February 2020 with extreme neck pain. After Dr. Neary performed a neurologic exam and MRI, which revealed a herniated disc in his neck, he recommended surgery on this little guy. Toby had a ventral slot surgery and was discharged pain-free less than 24 hours later!
Here is Toby at his 2 week recheck exam! He is healing wonderfully from his surgery and is back to his silly self at home! 😊
Thank you, Dr. Warner at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic for referring this wonderful family to BVNS!

Although these past few weeks have come with many changes, we are still grateful to help our patients become happy again. Here's a look back at one of our happy patients before the quarantine:
#HappyPatient Leo was referred to our Atlanta location from VCA Buckhead Animal Hospital for severe neck pain that was unresponsive to medications. Dr. Neary recommended an MRI of his neck, which revealed a severe spinal cord compression from a herniated disc. Leo went to surgery that day to decompress the disc. Leo went home the next day with his head held high!
This is Leo and his parents at his staple removal. He is very generous with his kisses and very happy to be feeling better. We are so thrilled to see Leo’s progress and wish him the best of luck!
Your pet's health matters to us. This is why, during the COVID-19 pandemic, BVNS remains an essential service for all emergency cases. 💙

#HappyPatient This is Willy from Save a Yorkie Rescue! He was rescued from a hoarding situation and was found to have a significant limp in his right front leg. This was determined to be due to a disc problem in his neck region of his spine. Dr. Trub was able to perform surgery to relieve the compression from the disc, and he is no longer in pain and is walking normally! This little dog has a love of life and people despite his background, and is now up for adoption!

#HappyPatient This handsome Frenchie is Remy. He presented to BVNS Woodstock for pelvic limb weakness. After a neurologic examination and MRI were performed with Dr. Neary, it was revealed that Remy that a disc extrusion that was causing spinal cord compression that could explain his clinical signs. Surgical decompression was recommended and performed to give Remy the best possible chance of recovery to normal function in addition to relieving his discomfort.
Here he is at his 2-week post-op staple removal where his owner reported that Remy has been doing amazing at home! He is able to walk around and wants to get back to playing. We wish Remy all the best in the rest of his recovery!
