Teacher or Coach?

We’ve had the honor and pleasure of hosting Noelle with Loudoun FCA, who has been coaching the kids on Ping Pong over the last few weeks. So in this video we wonder what it means to be a “Coach.” Whatever it is: @noelle.blankenship is a great one!

Discipline, Habits, “Hard Work” at IndED

Discipline is not about what the disciplinarians do. It’s about what the disciplined do. We had such a great time having Master Charles with Hard Work Martial Arts at IndED for the winter. If your son or daughter is in need of something to help develop good mental and physical... discipline, then you need look no further.

One minute on how we view music and education.

We’re so proud to have partnered this Winter with the finest music school: The Catoctin School of Music. Wayne has done a fantastic job of introducing the world of music (through keyboarding with a technology bent) to the kids at IndED . If you’re looking for music lessons, look no further.

Week two of Coding with The Coder School - Ashburn! The personal touch these guys give is really amazing. We’re so excited to have them as part of our Winter Program:

We enjoyed having the Leesburg Chess Kids at IndED on Tuesday! More to come!

Thanks IndED Academies for hosting tonight! The kids had a great time and learned about notation :)

From all of us at IndED, we wish you all the joy, hope, and love of Christmas, and a New Year filled with happiness and meaning.

"As I tell you my story, you'll see how I devoted my life to seeking knowledge that I believed would benefit mankind. As a result, I brought misery and death to everyone I loved, and I'm now near death myself. Don't let that happen to you."
Quote from Frankenstein -- Writing and Language Arts at IndED today.

We launched our Winter session of Civics and the Community with a whirlwind world tour called “World Citizenship Through the Arts”...

Thanks to Rhonda Williams for doing this for us. The kids really enjoyed it!

Pause...and Give Thanks

400 years ago today, 38 English colonists were a week away from landing in Virginia, with instructions from the London Company, to be opened the day of their arrival, Dec. 4, 1619:

"We ordaine that the day of our ships arrivall at the place assigned for plantacon in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God."

From our family here at IndED, we implore you to...pause, and give thanks for our many blessings, strive to be worthy of those blessings, and humbly ask forgiveness when we fall short.

Have a Blessed and Happy Thanksgiving!

The students had a chance to chat with a few active citizens last Tuesday at the Smarts Mill polling precinct, including: Leesburg Town Councilman Marty Martinez, candidate for School Board, Kenya Savage, and local activist, Mark Sell.

We had a great time learning why people take a day off of work to help their candidates or decide to put their own hat in the ring for elected office.

Councilman Martinez also made a great point. He said it’s important that we not view politics in such a negative light. He said that when you see the name calling and demonization and vitriol and yelling and arguing... that’s not politics. Very often it’s just bad behavior. Real politics is getting together, disagreeing civilly, and seeking to solve problems or resolve issues.

Thanks to these citizens for sharing their passion for community with us.

We had the honor of celebrating Veterans Day at the George C. Marshall International Center. An inspiring address from Adm. T. Joseph Lopez, and honorably emceed by Major Dennis Boykin.

It’s important to remember, as the Admiral alluded to, that Veterans Day was conceived as a simultaneous celebration of victory and of peace, as it was originally Armistice Day celebrating the end of World War I.

From all of us at IndED, we offer a special thanks to those who have served in helping preserve our liberty.

Enjoy your Veterans Day!

Is "how much recess" the right question?

LCPS recently decided to extend recess to 30 or 40 minutes a day. When it comes to recess, though, are we really asking the right questions?

Civics and Community is studying the U.S. Constitution this Fall, and we're taking the last few weeks to do a MOCK TRIAL.

Thanks to Charles Koehler for helping us put it together in a way in which we can teach the students the true value of the American Bill of Rights.

The near team (to Charles' right), is the defense team for "Hansel"... who has been accused of murdering a "poor defenseless lady" in a cottage made of candy in the woods.

The far team (whom Charles is addressing to his left) represents the Commonwealth prosecution team.

The Next Generation of ... Soldier Statesmen

The students got a chance to learn about one of the 20th Century’s greatest soldier-statesmen, George C Marshall, who spent the War years and the last years of his life right her in Downtown Leesburg.

When we’re trying to predict what our kids will be doing for a career, should we say things like “the next generation of...” or should we focus simply on building integrity, perseverance, and honor? #gcmic #soldierstatesman #inded #schoolchoice

Visit William Sherman Turgeon Jr's Memorial Website

As one of the founders of IndED, Jill Irvin Turgeon's loving heart and love for people, kids in particular, is well known to the IndED family. What could be less known is how matched she was with a husband equally as caring and loving, who has taught here in Loudoun County for many years and is deeply respected by his students, their parents, and the community as a whole.

Mr. William Turgeon passed this past Sunday after a year-long battle with Cancer. He had spent that year, never giving up on beating the disease, but "living deep and sucking all the marrow out of life," traveling the world with Jill and visiting grandkids.

His genuine smile, and his gracious and generous heart will be sorely missed. Please join us in sharing our condolences with Jill and the rest of Bill's family. We're praying for you.

[10/16/19]   Mentors Needed at IndED

Independent Education (IndED) seeks to change what it means to be a "teacher", and establish a new standard for personalized, inspiring, “Great Ideas” education. All of our courses and programs involve multi-age classrooms with between 5 and 15 students. Currently ages range from 8 to 15.

We are looking for three different types of Mentors:

SPECIALISTS teach different survey courses and labs at our Hub in Downtown Leesburg. Survey courses are ongoing and growing. Courses are 11 weeks long for 90 minutes a week.

MicroSchool MENTORS have the task of teaching a small full-curriculum, multi-age classroom, which form the core of the IndED system. They also have the opportunity to consult with parents, advise on materials and resources, and create a personalized learning plan for each student, along with a system and/or schedule for families in home-instruction. Position is between 15 and 20 hours a week, supporting a 33 week program between Labor Day and Memorial Day.

GUEST SPEAKERS from the business, non-profit, and public community have the opportunity to come share their passion and expertise with some of our Members on an ongoing basis. It can be once a year for 30 minutes, up to a 4-week, 75 minutes per week course.

Myth vs Facts – The Truth About Columbus

There is a lot to learn from Christopher Columbus.
