IndED Academies

IndED Academies

A “MicroSchool” enterprise, serving homeschool families through personalized, project-based, inquiry-driven, community-centered learning experiences.

IndED Academies is a Micro-School, private education service in Loudoun County, VA.

Mission: Cultivation and Improvement of the General Mind.

Amidst the fireworks and food and fellowship, may we all be ever mindful of the amazing idea which is these United States.

God Bless America

Today in SCIENCE History:

In 1995, the space shuttle Atlantis docked with the Russian space station Mir for a mission which lasted until 4 Jul 1995 that included the exchange of Russian crew members. The docking tested a special module similar to one that was to be used to link shuttles with the international station when it was completed. For these five days, the space vehicles formed the largest man-made satellite ever to orbit the Earth.

IndED’s Socratic style, field trips and special guests, as well as our Great Conversation(s) initiative make it easy for families and friends to learn how to talk through important ideas, and keep the Republic we fought for. Stay tuned to “Great Conversation(s)”:

This Day in History

Today in History:

1788: New Hampshire becomes the ninth state to sign the U.S. Constitution thus reaching the minimum number of States required to establish our nascent republic!

(Starting September 10, 2019, IndED will be doing 11 weeks on the United States Constitution - ages 9-15. Reach out to us with questions!) Learn what happened today in history around the world including major events on crime, entertainment, and more.

Writing is not simply a form of communication; it is an art form, and a mighty tool... mightier even than the sword.

Happy Father's Day to all those dads out there...ordinary men turned by LOVE.

Photo Contest Winners Announced

IndED was so happy to have Loudoun Now support our photography students. Special thanks especially to Renss Greene for picking out these awesome photos from our kids! Loudoun Now’s staff judged a photography competition among the students at IndEd, a “microschool” in downtown Leesburg. It was the school’s first photography class, taught by local photographer and IndEd parent Alex Erkiletian. In keeping with the school’s hands-on approach, students built...

At IndED we believe a community needs its kids, and we educate them as part of the community and not apart from it. Special thanks to all the fine orgs and good people who make the kids of IndED feel welcome: Finch Knitting + Sewing Studio, IndED Chess Club, OpenBlooms, Cooking with Fun, Hugh Forsythe, Danielle Nadler, Renss Greene, Loudoun Now, Fr. Robert Gillispie, St Joseph the Just, @OwniThe Own It Company, Vedic Temple of Virginia, Paul Gernhardt, Loudoun Museum, GamePoint Athletics, Clerk of Court Gary Clemens

The scale of D-Day is hard to grasp. This is as close as one can get to seeing it. This Spring (just finished), we studied Warfare from the Battle of Kadesh all the way through WWII, ending in a trip to George Marshall’s home here in Leesburg.

Special thanks to all those brave souls who were willing to storm that beach. To them we owe a great debt.

Our families got together for a cookout to wrap up the school year. A lot of conversation revolved around the fact that: Homeschooling is Life.

Summer Chess Club at IndED!

Summer Chess Club at IndED! Wednesdays at 2pm - We took some time with our families to enjoy food and fellowship to celebrate the end of the school year. The main theme of a good chunk of our conversations: Homeschooling is not a “Thing.” Homeschooling is Life.

Our kids wrapped up the year on the “Scientific Method” and we want to share how we approach Science in general: as “Natural Philosophers.”

Happy Memorial Day from your friends at IndED! And thank you to all the veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much to support our country.

🌞 Happy Last Day of School! 🌞

Don't forget to keep up with your reading and summer studies, or to sign up for fall classes! We hope that everyone has a great summer! 😎

[05/22/19]   Mentors Needed at IndED

Independent Education (IndED) seeks to change what it means to be a "teacher", and establish a new standard for personalized, inspiring, “Great Ideas” education. All of our courses and programs involve multi-age classrooms with between 5 and 15 students. Currently ages range from 8 to 15.

We are looking for three different types of Mentors:

SPECIALISTS teach different survey courses and labs at our Hub in Downtown Leesburg. We have three “core” courses covering: citizenship (government, business, and communication), writing and the arts (narrative, descriptive, persuasive, poetry, and theatre), and sciences (scientific reasoning, physical sciences, life sciences). Survey courses are ongoing and growing. Courses are 11 weeks long for 90 minutes a week.

MicroSchool MENTORS have the task of teaching a small full-curriculum, multi-age classroom, which form the core of the IndED system. They also have the opportunity to consult with parents, advise on materials and resources, and create a personalized learning plan for each student, along with a system and/or schedule for families in home-instruction. Position is between 15 and 20 hours a week, supporting a 33 week program between Labor Day and Memorial Day.

GUEST SPEAKERS from the business, non-profit, and public community have the opportunity to come share their passion and expertise with some of our Members on an ongoing basis. It can be once a year for 30 minutes, up to a 4-week, 75 minutes per week course.

IndED is a “MicroSchool” enterprise, founded in 2016 serving homeschool families through personalized, project-based, inquiry-driven, community-centered learning experiences, led by dedicated and passionate Mentors. We offer counseling to parents in getting the most out of their homeschooling experience, and engaging classes with opportunities to experiment, deliberate, and create.

There is a genuine approach to "Personalized Learning"...

What a great time and wonderful civil-war learning experience at Balls Bluff Park. These kids had a blast! the “Age of Obsolescence.” Find more about IndED’s Microschool program.

Photography class has been awesome this semester and we are so proud of all our budding photographers! We can’t wait to see whose submissions get selected later on this month to be published in Loudoun Now.

It starts with something as simple as a game.

Do not carry your mistakes around with you - carry the lessons that are learned from them.

Our students had a blast checking out Loudoun Museum's Loudoun Divided Civil War exhibit at Loudoun Museum which tied in nicely with all our War Theory studies we are doing this semester!

We have really been enjoying this warm weather and having any chance to go outside! Especially playing baseball with Coach Bob and GamePoint Athletics.

There are many ways caregivers and parents can embrace nature and provide environmental stewardship learning opportunities for their children - some are as simple as planting a vegetable garden.

Planting a garden and growing your own produce is a great way to show your children that fruits and vegetables can be bought locally, or better yet grown in your own yard.

Happy Earth Day! Let’s do something good for our planet today!

Happy Easter, IndED fam!!

If you’re home on a Spring Break Staycation - here are a few ideas of way to keep that brain moving even when you aren’t in class!

Get a Sodoku or Crossword Puzzle book and do it as a family. See if your children can complete a full puzzle this week - let them pick out the design!

Play a guessing game - we love Outburst or Trivial Pursuit!

Go outside and do a nature hunt. List 10 things on a piece of paper that they have to find.

Have thoughtful conversations. We love these Conversation Cards from Amazon! Keep them with you next time you go to a restaurant and are waiting for your food!

HAPPY SPRING BREAK to all our Students and Staff! We hope everyone has a safe and wonderful week!

Passion is key!

It starts when they're young!

It’s time to start thinking about summer programs!! We are going to be offering classes on Wednesdays from 11am - 3:30pm, for Math Connections, having Downtown Field Trips, and even Chess Club!

Civics and Community – Spring 2019: Warfare – IndED Academies

Have you enrolled your child in our “Civics and Community” program?? We are excited for this one of a kind class that offers children a deeper understanding of American Government, World History, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Community engagement and civic (and civil) discourse through creative and fun experiences with opportunities to engage in the community at large with their projects!

[03/23/19]   Time to start planning for next month’s Spring Break activities! Does your family usually travel or stay home for Spring Break?

#passion in education is key!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! This March 17th celebration was started in 1631 when the Church established a Feast Day honoring St. Patrick. He had been Patron Saint of Ireland who had died around the fifth century—a whopping 12 centuries before the modern version of the holiday was first observed! The leprechauns and green rivers came much later 😀

It speaks volumes when others see the dedication, motivation and hard work from all our students.

It’s time to start thinking about spring classes and we are so excited for everything we have in store! Don’t forget to register for “Thinking Like a Scientist” - an exploration of scientific thinking and reasoning, touching on all the categories of science: Life, Astronomy, and Physics!

The kids were so excited to visit a Hindu Temple followed by some delicious naan bread and hummus in cooking class!

A good thing to remember when doing homework or following up with lessons!

Due to inclement weather and the safety of everyone involved, we have decided to reschedule our Open House for next Wednesday, February 27th. Thank you!

Happy President’s Day! We are going to test your US History knowledge a little bit this morning with some presidential trivia! George Washington is one of only TWO presidents who signed the constitution…. can you name the other??

Join us for our February Open House on the 20th from 12:30pm - 2pm and come learn about everything IndEd has to offer! We invite interested parents to join our Head of School, administration and faculty for an overview of our programs and Q&A with our academic leadership. We look forward to seeing you there!

Here is a little history lesson in honor of Valentine’s Day! For those who might not know, the origin of Valentine’s Day actually has nothing to do with love at all. There are several theories as to how it began, but the most popular version is that Valentine was a Roman priest in the third century who performed marriages in secret after it was outlawed by the emperor. Hence, Valentine always fighting for love which eventually evolved into us celebrating love today! Happy Valentine’s Day, friends!
