ASIA Families

Today I had to get a lump removed from my breast. This has become all too common among adoptee friends in our 30s, 40s+ SHARE: GET SCREENED EARY. Asian adoptees are more at risk because of the lack of knowledge to birth family medical info & our ethnic group. Since we were born in Asia it is not clear if we face risks more similar to those living there, to immigrants who move to the USA, or Asian Americans born here. But this matters. This study suggests there are differences in terms of age of onset for breast cancers with those in Asia peaking in the 40s, Asian Americans in the 50s, and white non-Hispanics in the 70s. Since we don’t know where adoptees fall I believe we have to be more conservative and get mammograms earlier ~~ in our 30s. I know Asian adoptee women who have died in their 30s because they weren’t screened. Because of the knowledge of the early age of onset in Asian countries women there get screens in their 30s. Prevention is the cure. Please share and get screened. #adoptees #healthdisaprities #asianwomen
Has anyone heard if Ginkgo Leaf Arts will be having a craft sale this year? My family really looks forward to it.
As I mentioned at Camp Rice, ASIA Families is invited to The 3rd Korean Culture Celebration for Adoptees and Their Families on Saturday, August 10th from 4 to 7 PM. in Bethesda, MD. Post adoption services and culturally enriching programs for Korean adoptees ASIA was founded to meet the need to bring cultural resources, and other support services to international adoptees and their adoptive families.

ASIA received 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the IRS in January 2010. ASIA opened its first Korean Culture School in January 2010 and we were awarded an educational grant from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. In addition to the Embassy of Korea's support, we wish to recognize our students and their families. Due to your enthusiasm and support, ASIA is growing.

Mission: Our missions are to: 1) assist internationally adopted persons to develop their identities through enriching education programs relative to their country of birth, 2) grow leaders among internationally adopted individuals so that they may contribute to society, and 3) gather and distribute information and resources to promote healthy adoptive families with children who joined their families from countries other than the USA.

This is a great scholarship opportunity for international adoptees.

Do you know amazing international adoptees who are high school seniors or college students? Please let them know about this exciting scholarship opportunity! { Pictured below: Darci Siegel, last year’s scholarship winner }

Also-Known-As’ scholarship program has been created to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments of young dynamic adoptees attending college. This year the Also-Known-As Adoptee Excellence Scholarship is a $1,500 scholarship awarded to an outstanding graduating high school senior or undergraduate student who was adopted to the United States from another country.

The Adoptee Excellence Scholarship is open to international adoptees who demonstrate the attributes of perseverance, integrity, leadership, and good citizenship. Also-Known-As seeks candidates who have used their formative youth experiences and insight gained through navigating their own adoption story to lead, serve, and pursue a life of purpose and significance, both individually and for their communities.

International adoptees are invited to apply who were adopted to the U.S. from another country; age 25 or under as of the application deadline; and plan to enroll full-time in Fall 2020 in an undergraduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college, university, or vocational-technical school. Financial need will be considered this year. The scholarship will be awarded in June 2020.

Application deadline: April 30, 2020. Please visit for application directions and materials. Any questions? Email the Scholarship Committee at [email protected].
