They called me Awesome. I was never the tallest or the fastest I didn't have great big spots and my tail was nothing special But I always listened even when my butt itched Even when they didn't have a banana Even when the grass was the perfect amount of ripe I made them laugh They made me dance I lived. I helped. Yup, I was Awesome. And do you know what? I always will be. ---Miss you, Art. Always will.

THANK YOU, Loudon Therapeutic Riding! After 3 months, I finally got to hug "my" horse again. I got to see my wonderful instructor and some of the other ladies that work at LTR. I got to talk about horses with horse people. I got gravel kicked in my boots while running with Jolie. I got the breeze with the great view from the saddle. All thanks to all the wonderful, hard working, loving individuals at LTR.

Founded in 1974, LTR was the original pilot program for therapeutic riding in Virginia. To partner with a horse is to share its strength and grace.

The experience can be life-changing. We know because we see it happen every day. http://www.ltrf.org/ The emphasis of LTR programs, which includes therapeutic riding, hippotherapy, carriage driving, and Equine Services for Heroes is to provide a highly motivating experience that promotes therapeutic benefits leading to improvement in functional life skills and emotional well-being in a safe and supportive environment.

- Loudoun Therapeutic Riding, a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) Intl. Premier Accredited Center, was formed in 1974 to empower and improve the lives of people with cognitive, psychological and physical disabilities through the benefits of equine assisted activities and therapies. - Equine Assisted Activities (EAA) are widely recognized as being an effective therapy for people with disabilities. Horseback riding develops self-awareness, builds self-confidence, improves concentration and increases self-discipline. Riding also strengthens and relaxes muscles; improves posture and core strength, balance and coordination; and increases joint mobility. Off the horse, programs also improves self-awareness and self-image. Working towards these goals carries over into improved function in all activities of daily living. - Our PATH Intl. certified instructors are specially trained in teaching methods that use equine assisted activities to assist people with physical, cognitive, behavioral and mental health challenges to learn horsemanship skills and benefit from the equine partnership. - Programs: Throughout continuing eight-week sessions skills are developed which address each participant's specific challenges. -For riders with physical disabilities, the horse's motion closely replicates the human gait as they sit astride the horse's back at walk, thus helping to improve the rider's posture, joint mobility, balance, and core muscle strength. -For participants with cognitive or emotional challenges the relationships formed with the horse, staff and volunteers can lead to increased self-confidence, patience and self-esteem. -Other goals include improved concentration, attention to task and enhance functional life skills. - Our horses and ponies are partners in our programming and are carefully screened and trained to assure suitability. Adaptive equipment is used if necessary for a rider to safely participate, and an PATH Intl. certified instructor is present for all activities involving riders. The emphasis of LTR programs, which includes adaptive riding/horsemanship and carriage driving, is to provide a highly motivating experience that promotes these therapeutic benefits and an overall improved quality of life in a safe and supportive environment. - Hippotherapy, added in 2010, is a treatment intervention that uses the multidimensional movement of a horse; from the Greek word "hippos" which literally means horse. Specially trained, Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapists use this medical treatment for clients who have movement dysfunction. - Volunteers: Volunteers are the backbone of the program and act as pony handlers, side-walkers, and grooms. Volunteers also assist in many other ways including fund-raising and development efforts. Three volunteer orientation/training sessions are held each year to ensure well-trained and efficient volunteer staff as safety is a primary consideration. Up to three volunteers may be needed for one rider. Parents of riders often contribute time as volunteers. - LTR relies on the generous support of private donors, and corporate and foundation grants. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation!

Mission: Loudoun Therapeutic Riding empowers and improves the lives of people with cognitive, physical and psychological disabilities through the benefits of equine-assisted activities and therapies, while serving the equine services industry through training and education.

Hi everyone, Ms. Caitlin here! Please join us in officially welcoming Thomas into our LTR herd! This horse is special to me, so I wanted to introduce him. He is a 12 year old, 15h Connemara/thoroughbred cross. He and I have spent the last 2 years getting to know each other. We played around doing some low level eventing, lots of trail riding and some competing together. The opportunity presented itself to bring him to LTR, and I am very excited to share this special horse with our students! A huge thank you to the Desaix family for generously leasing him to the program!! His fan club is already growing! πŸ’œ #thomas #newherdmember #lovetrustrespect

We were sooooo happy to get our old friend George back in the saddle again! He is a part of our Equine Services for Heroes program and has recently moved back to the area. He had previously ridden Gable, but has now fallen in love with Mae West. To quote George β€œShe is a sweetheart!!” ❀️❀️ His smile says it all! Welcome back George! #LoveTrustRespect #veteran #MaeWest

🧐 Whose shoes are these??

These uniquely shaped horseshoes are called "heart bar shoes", and can be used to help treat many hoof ailments or provide extra protection and support to horses who need it!

Not all of our horses wear shoes, but the ones who do require a new set every 4-6 weeks! This keeps them sound and happy. πŸ’œ

Comment below if you know which of our horses wears these shoes!

Hey everyone, Ms. Kathy here! I’ve really been missing all my human and horse friends while out having knee replacement surgery, so it was awesome being back in the barn especially on #MeetAHorse Day 2020! This is β€œThomas”, a prospective new herd mate and it was great getting acquainted. Stay tuned for updates & info!! πŸ’œπŸ΄ #MaeWestApproves #HappyFriday #Thomas

πŸ’œ Carriage driving develops communication skills, improves gross and fine motor skills, builds self-confidence, self-awareness, and trust.

LTR’s carriage driving instructor Mary Jo Beckman turned her face shield sideways to create a barrier so LTR can continue to provide this important program to a military veteran during the pandemic.

At-risk youth and those who are unable to sit astride a horse also benefit from this empowering activity. Imagine how you would feel telling our nearly 2,000 pound Percheron carriage horse to β€œWalk On, Duke!” and watching him listen by doing just that!

Ms. Heather wanted to share with you today about the power of the horse. β€œThis week has been challenging to say the least. But the last couple of days have reminded me why I do what I do and the power of the horse. The power to turn a frown upside down. The power to start developing trust again. The power to build confidence and strength. And the power to heal. β€οΈπŸ¦„β€

With deep sadness we share the news that on Saturday we lost our β€œAwesome Art” from complications of Cushings Syndrome (a pituitary disease common in older horses). Art’s huge, outgoing personality kept everyone entertained during the past 11 years that he served alongside us, and we’re certain he is dancing (weaving) away in heaven while continuing to keep watch over his earthly herd. Always the guardian, comedian, friend, and supreme teacher, this incredibly versatile horse touched countless lives and will be missed by everybody who loved him. Thank you Art, you define Awesome. We know he would love it if you all enjoyed a banana or two in his memory today. πŸŒπŸŒπŸ΄πŸ’™ #AwesomeArt #LoveTrustRespect #RestWellGoodBuddy
