TRUTH BE TOLD: Little known facts behind ALL FOR THE UNION - Brother against brother at the Battle at Waterford

One Union troop formed in Confederate Virginia - just one - from right here in Loudoun County: the Independent Loudoun Rangers, made up of pro-Union Virginians, including otherwise pacifist Quakers.

And in late August of 1862, the Rangers' Lieutenant, Luther Slater, quartered his men at the Waterford Baptist Meeting House at the top of the hill - no doubt a better night's sleep on the pews than in tents.

But just before daybreak on August 27, Confederate Capt. White and the 35th Battalion joined with a portion of Captain Randolph’s Black Horse Brigade to converge on the Church. During the long fight that followed, Lieut. Slater suffered a number of wounds, and a large portion of the Loudoun Rangers were killed or wounded... and the Rangers eventually surrendered, including a young man names Charles Snoots.

But one Confederate wasn't satisfied with Charles' surrender. That would be his brother, William, a member of Captain White's 35th Battalion. William came at Charles with a revolver, shouting he had a right to kill the prisoner. His superior officers disagreed and held him back. Charles lived, was taken to prison and eventually patrolled.

And the war of "brother against brother" had begun.

Our play, ALL FOR THE UNION, begins as the skirmish ends and the Dutton family takes on a wounded Union soldier, and the town begins to face the daily struggles of life in the Civil War. And the play follows Dutton sisters, Lida and Lizzie, and their friend Sarah Steer, as they decide to do much more than just survive...

eventbrite.com ALL FOR THE UNION is based on the true story of Virginia's first female journalists, Lida and Lizzie Dutton and Sarah Steer. With unshakable hope and ironclad humor, these three pro-Union women dealt with battles and skirmishes, Confederate foragers and a Union Burning Raid but wanted to do much mor...

First Read-through last night. Thrilled about our line up!

Two brothers from Lovettsville, Virginia joined opposing sides in the Civil War. The brothers faced off in a skirmish at the Waterford Baptist Meeting House, and the Union brother was taken prisoner. The Confederate brother went at him, revolver drawn, yelling he had a right to kill his prisoner, but his Commander held him back.

Loudoun County is a microcosm of the American Civil War, and it’s stories hold fresh meaning today.

Tickets on sale this May - Catch it at the Capital Fringe Festival in D.C. or historic Aldie Mill in August.

What happens when you write a play based on true stories from Civil War history? You learn to walk the tightrope between story arc and historical accuracy.

I can tell you 30% of ALL FOR THE UNION actually happened (including a ridiculously romantic first meeting between the lead and her future husband which I couldn’t have made up if I’d tried), 40% is based on Loudoun County, VA’s war experiences, and 30% is there to keep the audience traveling along a great story arc.

You want the facts, I have the bibliographic resource list. You want a great story based on the true story of Virginia's first female journalists who fought the Confederacy in their own way, take a seat and enjoy the show.

As the Dickens story is read aloud by Phillip Erickson, he’s interrupted now and then by the book’s characters (in full period dress) to play out a scene or two. Turns out, the characters think the reader is Ebenezer Scrooge! Well, it's an honest error, as Phil recently appeared as Ebeneezer in Run Rabbit Run Theatre’s ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS CAROL!

Free Program – no registration required - highly recommended for children of all ages!
