Touro University Nevada School of Physical Therapy was founded in 2008 and offers an Entry-level Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. The School of Physical Therapy’s philosophy is aligned with the institutional mission of To Serve, To Lead, and To Teach. Today, TUN is home to more than 1,400 students in a wide range of degree programs in allied health sciences and education, as well as osteopathic medicine. [06/02/20]   Dear Touro Nevada Campus Community,

In light of the continued escalation of violence and disruption across our country, including now locally here in Southern Nevada, I feel it is important to share with you that Touro University Nevada stands in solidarity with our communities of color who experience discrimination, marginalization, and injustice as a result of institutionalized and systemic racism. We recognize that the impacts of George Floyd’s death are far reaching, and demonstrate that these acts of racism and violence are still all too familiar of an experience for people of color in the United States.

Like many of you, we at Touro University Nevada are angry and grief-stricken with the events that are taking place throughout our country. Civil disobedience and protest marches are important ways to facilitate change. However, there is no rationale for destruction, violence, and the blatant disregard that has been shown for civility, humanity, and compassion. Acts of racism and violence contradict Touro’s core commitment to social justice and underscore the need for all of us to address matters of racism and injustice.

Now more than ever, we must join together and embrace those values which make the Touro community so special. We have demonstrated these values throughout this worldwide pandemic, and now we must continue to put into action these core Judaic principles which are the very foundation of Touro – a deep respect for the inherent value and dignity of each and every individual.

I am therefore asking each of you to stand up against racism, prejudice, violence, and injustice. I ask that you continue to be the model of civility and tolerance that makes us a strong campus community. What our society needs now more than ever is peace, compassion, understanding, and unity for us all.

Be safe and be well,

Shelley Berkley
CEO and Senior Provost

[06/01/20]   From our President, Dr. Alan Kadish:
To the Touro College and University System Community:

Be Part of the Solution

The situation in America was already dire these last few months. The pandemic that has shattered lives and put a frightening number of Americans out of work had already taken more than 100,000 lives. But then we turned on the news and watched a man beg for breath; watched in horror as his life was casually taken.

The tragic death of George Floyd was not an isolated incident. Racism and disturbing police clashes are all too familiar throughout U.S. history and unfortunately, still continue in 2020. Touro stands in solidarity with our communities of color against all forms of discrimination, and with all those who experience marginalization and injustice as a result of institutionalized and systemic racism. There is no excuse for the blatant disregard for humanity that was shown to George Floyd. Acts of racism and violence contradict our nation’s core commitment to social justice and underscore the need for all of us to join together in addressing matters of institutionalized racism and injustice.

And now the fires rage. The elements for this perfect storm were all there. As vital as social distancing has been these last three months, people paid an inestimable price for the loss of human contact. Healthy human beings are, after all, social beings. As hard as the destruction of jobs and ravages of illness can be, together, we Americans have always proven resilient. By way of example, speak with any veteran of World War II and you’ll more likely hear stories of camaraderie than of heroics. It wasn’t randomly that psychologist Abraham Maslow included the essential requisites of love, support and belonging in his famous hierarchy of human needs. People need people.

But all relationships between human beings are doomed to fail when the requisite respect is removed from the equation.

A vital lesson from the current pandemic is how important a single individual can be. It only takes one to infect dozens…or to nurture many. Each individual’s impact can be profound. The policeman should have considered this as a helpless man lay prone on the ground. The consequences of his callous lack of respect did not end with the tragic death of George Floyd. Just as respect begets respect, contempt begets contempt. We see that contempt erupting into flames with the destruction of property and the taking of additional innocent lives.

We have no control over the forces of nature, we can only control our responses. When a virus, flood, earthquake or hurricane arrives to disrupt our lives, we know what to do. The first responders and front-line healthcare workers that everyone has come to admire are heroic not because they face danger but rather because of the reasons they are willing to do so. People need people. The cultivation of respect and human dignity is the highest aspiration for which we can strive.

No one can breathe easily while watching the video of George Floyd or recalling his parting words. But the tragedy grows exponentially when catapulted as the basis for violent mobs to burn and loot—to vent frustrations on other innocent people. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. aptly pointed out, “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.” Instead, as the tragic assassination of Medgar Evers helped inspire the important civil rights movement, we must allow George’s tragic death to inspire greater compassion, not only in police business but in all matters.

At Touro, respect and compassion are values with which we imbue all of our programs. Working constantly for human rights and dignity is part of our proud tradition—indeed, I cannot imagine our schools without these essential human components, which stand at the core of our mission. In a world that clearly needs healing, may our individual and collective efforts continue to be part of the solution.

Touro students and faculty, let us be the people others turn to in this time of crisis and need. Let us model tolerance, justice and compassion. Let us reach out to our friends, neighbors and communities with messages of peace and understanding for all.

Dr. Alan Kadish

Touro Auction

Hi, everyone.

As you know, the annual Touro Gala raises funds to support student scholarships. The Touro Gala was originally scheduled for this past March, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were forced to postpone. We recently sent out a Save the Date for the rescheduling of the Touro Gala to August 30th as we hoped that the situation with COVID-19 would allow us to hold the event at that time. Unfortunately, although the local hotels are beginning to reopen, there still are restrictions for large-scale events.

The Touro Gala is the major opportunity to raise funds for student scholarships. Our students are experiencing unforeseen financial hardship brought on by COVID-19 and these scholarships are vital to ensuring they can focus on their studies, instead of financial concerns. This is why it was such a difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Touro Gala.

Therefore, given the immediate financial needs of our students, we are hosting an online auction to raise much-needed funds for our student scholarships. Your generous support will help ensure they reach their goals of becoming our community’s front line healthcare providers and educators

The 2020 Touro University Nevada Scholarship Online Auction will open on Monday, June 1 at 7:00am and close on Monday, June 15th at 11:59pm. You can access the auction page by texting TouroAuction to 76278 or go to:

We have an exciting selection of jewelry, art, dining packages, experiences, and so much more! Each auction item winner will be contacted within a week of the auction close date to arrange for shipping or delivery. You are also encouraged to make an outright donation through the even page to ensure our students have the financial support they need.

We thank you for your patience and understanding through these difficult times and thank you in advance for supporting Touro students by participating in this online auction. Help Touro University Nevada spread the word about Touro University Nevada 2020 Scholarship Auction - Powered by GiveSmart

[05/14/20]   May 14, 2020

Dear Touro Campus Community:

It is our sincere hope that all of you are staying safe and healthy. We recognize that given Governor Sisolak’s announcement this past weekend that Nevada would begin moving toward reopening, there are many questions about the status of Touro Nevada and our plans to reintegrate the campus.

First and foremost, we want to thank each of you again for your continued efforts to Stay Home for Nevada and help us alleviate the spread of COVID-19 in our community. You have all collectively shown the resilience of our campus as we adapted well to online instruction and business operations.

TUN’s Roadmap to the New Normal

With the Governor’s move to Phase 1 for the State, we likewise are in the process of establishing Touro’s plan. The senior leadership has begun developing the TUN Roadmap to the New Normal, which will be the University’s phased-in plan to reintegrate the campus. This Roadmap plan is still being developed. Department chairs, school directors, and budget unit supervisors will be working on the various phases of the Roadmap for each unit; and there will be opportunities for the campus community to review, ask questions, and provide comments and suggestions throughout the process. Today, we want to provide the following update on our current status and future plans.

We feel it is very important to maintain our current status of having all instruction and business operations remain online with the campus facilities closed for the remainder of the academic year (June 30). The only exceptions to this current phase is for those previously identified essential employees to be on campus and to allow for a limited number of faculty and students producing COVID-19 test kits in the research lab or conducting COVID-19 related research, and for small groups of less than 10 students to be brought in over the next month for required lab instruction in CHHS which has been approved by the State. All other programming will remain remote and the campus facilities will remain closed.

As we begin to transition to subsequent phasing in of the campus, we are working closely with public health experts, state officials, and the Touro System. As the TUN Roadmap to the New Normal is being developed it is being guided by, and decisions are being made with, the following priorities and principles:

• The health and safety of the campus community are our top priority.
• The engagement, retention, progression, and success of our students are principal drivers of planning.
• Also of paramount importance is faculty engagement and academic success, including scholarly activities, research, and service.
• We must also address and strengthen the University’s outreach and how we engage with external partners and other stakeholders.
• The campus master plan, facilities, and utilization of campus resources must be included in ongoing planning efforts.
• We must ensure that future planning includes sustainable and strategic budgeting of resources; and
• The reintegration plan will be developed with appropriate phases and timelines.

Preparing for the New Academic Year

We recognize that the question on everyone’s mind is if we can return to regular activities at the start of the new academic year. Although we would like to provide the campus community with a definitive answer to this question, it would be premature given the fact that we continue to experience challenges related to COVID-19. We will welcome new and returning students to campus later this summer. What the makeup of online and on site programming looks like will heavily depend upon the outcome of our Roadmap planning. We must also remain fully prepared to adjust our planning as needed based on the current conditions at any given time as well as based on any restrictions or additional conditions imposed on us by the State of Nevada.

Regardless of exactly what the upcoming academic year ultimately looks like, we are prepared to support our employees, our students, and our community and to ensure our students receive the best possible academic experience.

Although there remain some uncertainties in the roadmap ahead, the one thing we are sure of is that our Touro Nevada campus community will remain committed, innovative, and thoughtful in the ways we act to support one another and keep moving forward to the new normal.

Thank you again for all you do to support Touro’s mission of service, leadership, and teaching.
