[03/29/18]   To my beloved Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” Matt. 28:5-6 (NRSV)
Do not be afraid: these four words are repeated again and again throughout the gospel accounts. They are said so often, in the imperative, that one of the conclusions that we can reach is that we are a people whose hearts tend to fear, and that our loving God desires us to be free from fear.
There is much happening today that can make our heart tremble, with fear and with grief. The stories in our communities, in our homes and neighborhoods, are deeply troubling. “Do not be afraid,” say the angels of God through scripture. We long to be obedient to that command, but how do we do it?
Holy Week is a time when we receive the gift of being able to see the events and stories of today in light of the gospel story of redemption and eternal life. We can place our current reality in the larger reality of the kingdom of God. So, this week, by the grace of God, we are brought to the table of Jesus with foot washing and the sweet communion of the breaking of bread. We travel to the garden for prayer, and to watch and wait. We are summoned to the trial and hear the cock crow. We hear the verdict, and lament at the foot of the cross as Jesus suffers and breathes his last breath. We travel to the tomb, and grieve. On the third day, we rise with the sun, and travel again to the tomb. There, by Matthew’s account, we meet the angels, who proclaim the news above: Do not be afraid! Jesus is risen!! And then we meet Jesus himself: the Risen Christ.
May the joy of this news, may the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the grave, flood our troubled hearts this Holy Week and beyond, that we may fulfill the Great Commandments to love God and neighbor, and the Great Commission to make disciples of all the nations. May God grant us healing, peace and love, and to God be the glory.
Your sister in Christ,
Rebecca Iannicelli
Washington East District Superintendent

[11/16/17]   Thank you to everyone who came out to our clergy/laity gathering on Tuesday, November 14 at La Plata UMC. Follow-up information will be forthcoming.

[11/08/17]   Bishop's Day on the Washington East District Postponed!
The bishop’s time with the Washington-East District has been postponed, but I am asking you to continue to hold the date (November 14). Bishop LaTrelle Easterling received last minute notice that she is being honored by the national Rainbow Coalition with their Trombone Award, and we have asked that she reschedule her time with us so that she can receive the award in person on Nov. 14. I know that we’ll all want to keep the bishop and her ministry among us in prayer, and we’ll be in touch with you soon about the new time and place to meet with Bishop Easterling.

So WHY save the date? We already planned to gather together, and I am now hoping to use the opportunity to host a community gathering to discern faithful responses to painful events unfolding around us in neighborhoods, churches, and homes. We will provide more details as soon as possible. Remember, we are one: connected in covenant. Together, we work to bring glory to God in our churches and communities.

Peace and blessings,

Rev. Dr. Rebecca Iannicelli
