Arkansas' 1038th Engineers Return from Kuwait Deployment
FT BLISS, Texas:-- Members of the Arkansas National Guard’s 1038th Engineer Company returned to U.S. soil here on Friday, April 10, 2015, having completed a nine-month deployment to Kuwait.
The 150 Soldiers of the North Little Rock based unit arrived around 9 a.m. after having flown all night from their deployed location. Unit members were greeted as they disembarked the aircraft by Arkansas Army National Guard Commander Brig. Gen. Patricia Anslow and 87th Troop Command Brigade Commander Col. Jim Treece.
“Welcome home! On behalf of all Arkansans we thank you for your service, and we are extremely proud of the mission you performed and the sacrifice that you and your family put forth,” said Anslow.
The unit originally left the state on June 9, 2014, and spent several more weeks at Ft. Bliss, Texas where they joined with several other units participating in the same mobilization in order to gain additional training and personnel certifications before continuing on to their deployment site in Kuwait.
The 1038th is a horizontal construction company which specializes in civil engineering-type projects. Their deployment to Kuwait involved the 1038th in infrastructure improvement projects at several installations. Their mission was road construction, drainage improvement, grading and leveling, utilities infrastructure improvements and heavy equipment operations.
1038th Commander Capt. Clayton Shelley said his equipment operators have gotten more driving and operations time this deployment and really developed quality skills.
“Operations time on this deployment was great for morale because as an engineering unit the Soldiers not only got the chance to do what they train for each year, but they also got to see the results of their work. At the end they get to say – We built that…” said Shelley.
The 1038th Soldiers will spend approximately one more week at Ft. Bliss completing post-deployment processing and health checks before returning home to North Little Rock.
With their return, the 1038th increase the number of Arkansas National Guard members who have served overseas since September 11, 2001, to 14,300.
