Security tips every teacher and professor needs to know about Zoom, right now

Anyone using Zoom should read this list of security tips.

arstechnica.com With Zoom-bombing a cultural phenomenon, here's how to protect your meetings.

[02/12/20]   Macs are still very resistant to the software that is militant, like ransomware and viruses, but we are seeing a lot more adware on Macs in the last few years.

Adware is software that redirects your web searches from your normal search engine (like Google) to gain income for that new search provider. This hijacking provider is often a search page that just does not look like your normal search page (although it may look close). Look for subtle changes in your search page. Look for a strange web address in the address bar.

A lot of this adware is caused by extensions that you may be tricked into installing into your browser to help with things like tracking packages, tracking flights, etc.

If you notice any of these changes to your browser contact us. We can help remove the adware and keep you from installing it.

Alexa and Google Home devices leveraged to phish and eavesdrop on users, again | ZDNet

Heads up for anybody that trusts their privacy to Amazon or Google by using these vulnerable devices. The problem with Amazon and Google's smart speakers is that the companies allow third-party access. HomePod is not affected because Apple does not allow the third-party access. The article actually has video examples of how the speakers can be taken over by malicious code.

Banning end-to-end encryption being considered by Trump team- 9to5Mac

This should concern anyone who thinks we should have a right to privacy. I must be clear on this – there is no way to safely allow the government to access our information and not allow for any hackers to access it also. Look at the NSA hacking tools that were stolen and are now out in the wild being used against us and our government. Please do not get confused and think this is a political issue. Every administration for the last 20 years has chipped away at our privacy rights in the interest of security. I will always choose privacy.
