It’s starting to look like fall and many are asking us how they can help as the temperatures get colder for those homeless we serve, who due to many circumstances, are staying outside. While our efforts are to get people housed and inside, the reality is that many homeless need extra help keeping warm during the winter months. Here’s a list of items that are requested that we give out for free every day during the winter months:
Winter adult hats, gloves and scarves
Adult jackets and coats (clean please)
Individual packets of hand warmers
Easy to open canned meat/ravioli, etc
We can receive these items at our emergency day shelter, Monday- Friday 8 am-2 pm. 123 N 6th Street

Last week a grateful Creative Kitchen employee shared a photo of an alley that a homeless man had cleaned outside her building. The post spurred many comments of support and kindness, as well as tales of his work downtown. One of our clients, Paul, is the generous helper. He is in need of shelter and help with expenses so Next Step will be looking for temporary housing for him. We have provided him with a phone and food. If you would like to help, please donate to this fund. It will only be spent on Paul’s living expenses. We hope everyone’s generosity can improve his future. Contact our executive director to learn more at [email protected].
Thank you Christ the King and Brittney Owens and Cindy Barr for bringing a delicious lunch for our clients today and becoming part of our monthly lunch team. We appreciate you!

Thank you First Presbyterian Church of Fort Smith, AR for your support in our efforts to care for and house the homeless in our community. We are immensely grateful for you!
We are proud supporters of many causes that aid in the good of our community. Today we presented 7 local agencies (who requested assistance) with funding. The agencies included: Ronald McDonald House, Community Rescue Mission, Fort Smith Police Department, Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund, Next Step Homeless Services, Children’s Emergency Shelter and Literacy Council for a total of $61,640! This would not be possible without our church trustees who designated monies for us to help our community. Pictured with agency representatives are members of our Super Trust Committee: Ken Wallace, Elly Gibbons, and Laura Cate.
