Is one better than the other? Join Jason as he explains the difference in detail and what he has learned through many years of wading the waters of how to be an effective manager while adopting a strong leadership approach.

University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Alumni

Today's #AlumniSpotlight is on May 2007 graduate, Keith Lux! Keith was a Business Admin major and currents works as a Financial Advisor for Ameriprise Financial in Fort Smith.

Keith said he enjoyed his time on campus and " Made a lot of great friends and developed connections with professors that I still run into today! I was fortunate enough to find an internship with Ameriprise at the end of my freshman year. That internship led to a career for me. This month marks my 16th year working for Ameriprise in a variety of different roles. Since graduation, I have enjoyed returning to campus and being able to help students. I have been involved in the Mentor Connections program for 3 years as a young alumni mentor. It has been a great way to develop connections in the community and learn from both the students and the executive mentors".

Keith will be doing a special free virtual presentation on Pandemic Personal Finance tomorrow, April 14th on our page! #UAFS #LionPride #UAFSAlumni

Congratulations to Prime Board Member Dalton Person on his appointment to the Fort Smith Public Schools Board of Education!

We are very excited to welcome Dalton Person to the Fort Smith Public Schools Board of Education. Dalton was officially elected to the school board yesterday and will be sworn in at our next board of education meeting on March 16. Get to know Dalton in a Q&A feature below and join us in welcoming him to the Board of Education! #FSPSProud

Q. Where did you graduate high school?
A. I'm a proud graduate of Southside High School and the Fort Smith Public School District.

Q. Where did you go to college?
A. I graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago before obtaining a juris doctor from the University of Arkansas.

Q. What was your undergraduate program of study?
A. My major was in political science with a focus in international relations and political theory.

Q. Who was your favorite teacher?
A. Every teacher from kindergarten through law school influenced me and deepened my knowledge in some way. I never had a single teacher that I did not admire. I have a great amount of respect for those who choose such an honorable profession molding future generations.

Q. Why are you interested in serving on the school board?
A. I am a product of this school system. I have several relatives, including my mother, who work for this school system, as well as friends and colleagues whose families remain involved. I want Fort Smith Public Schools to succeed. My hope is that each student in the district will confidently graduate one day with a skill and plan for their future.

Q. What do you think are the top three biggest challenges that face public education?
A. Universally, I think the biggest challenge for educators is meeting children where they are. More than 70% of students in our district receive a free or reduced price meal. Their home lives are radically diverse. Yet, teachers only have them for a set number of hours each week. Being able to provide all students with a quality education regardless of their home life will always be a challenge, but it is our most important duty. At a state level, Arkansas has a unique and challenging process for funding our public education system. Using our allocated funds for maximum benefit is another challenge. Locally, it's important that we provide an equitable education at each of our schools. There are more than 25 schools in our district, and maintaining equity among each of them is very important.

Q. What opportunities do you see for the future of education?
A. In this information age with constant technological advances, there continue to be more innovative ways to offer a quality education to our students. The challenge is harnessing those advances in a way that allows for the most good.

Q. What is your favorite pastime?
A. I love watching sports, reading, and listening to podcasts. On occasion, all at the same time, at least until my wife makes me stop.
