The Golden Rule Clothes Closet will close on Saturday,
November 3, 2018. Unable to remain open due to inadequate funding. We hate to close. We know how important this place is to many people. We will continue to seek other charitable organizations that might be willing to operate the store. Thanks to all who have donated in the past and have volunteered to work.
We have started a new campaign for monetary donations on GoFundMe. Please visit the site and make a donation. We need funds to continue to operate and stay open.

[04/25/18] Thank God! the Clothes Closet building didn't sustain any damage from the fire. The back door was singed and the fire department had to break in the doors. Both doors need to be replaced. We have insurance to pay for the their replacement. We will be able to conduct business as usual however. Thanks for everyone's support.

The Golden Rule Clothes Closet's allocation from the United Way has been decreasing for the last four years. Our funding from the United Way has decreased from $20,000 annually to approximately $5000 a year. We have found it necessary to find ways to make up this loss and to keep the doors open.
The cost of utilities increases every year and is putting a strain on our budget.
The Clothes Closet has four paid employees. Volunteers provide many other much needed services.
All clothing selected by our clients is given to them at no cost. We are NOT a thrift shop. We have begun a program whereby we ask for a VOLUNTEER contribution of $2.00 per family per visit. All donations are humbly and graciously accepted, BUT NOT NECESSARY to receive items from us. This is not a lot of money but it does help.
Please don't spread the rumor that we are now a thrift shop, WE ARE NOT A THRIFT SHOP!
WE now have a website!!! Visit us at grclothescloset.com
Let us know how you like it. We will be adding newsletters and other newsy stuff about us in the future.

We would like to relate some experiences told to us by some of our clients while visiting.
A recent note from a client stated that he was homeless and living in a tent. He related that the Clothes Closet supplied him with clothes, candles for both light and heat. He noted that the staff treated him as family, as they do with everyone who comes through the door.
Another client noted that he was homeless when he came to Fort Smith. The Clothes Closet provided him with a warm winter jacket and many other clothes to sustain him. When he was able to obtain his own shelter we practically furnished his new apartment.
Also, another client described how she was first associated with the Clothes Closet after being assiogned as a community service worker. Support from the Clothes Closet helped her to get through a very difficult period of her life and she is now drug free and a contributing member of the community.
The numbers for 2015 are completed. The value of items distributed, according to IRS values, was $1,039,870. There were 40375 visits. That is approx 7100 families and individuals that used the Clothes Closet.
We continue to see more and more of families that can't afford school clothes and clothes to wear to work. And with the winter weather on us, warm clothing, coats, and blankets are badly needed. Many of our clients can't afford to heat their houses 24 hours a day. So they heat during the day and try to warm themselves at night with blankets. The homeless can only warm themselves with a campfire, warm clothing, and blankets. So if you have some of these items in your closets and storage, not being used, we ask you to please consider donating them to the Clothes Closet.
Also the Clothes Closet is in need of donations of money. Since our allocation has been greatly reduced by the United Way, new sources of money need to be found. Expenses continue to go up and money continues to go down. So please help by making a monetary donation so that we can keep our doors open.
This year the Clothes Closet is on track to surpass last year's record year of donations. We continue to see more and more folks needing our services. However, with the lower funding by the United Way for the rest of this year and for next year, the Clothes Closet is in dire need of monetary donations. We have some very generous donors who are always willing to donate. Their help is greatly appreciated. But expenses to keep the doors open are ever increasing. We all are very aware of this eventuality.
Our clients have a great need for our services. They continue to look to the Clothes Closet for clothing for work and their children for school. Children are often embarrassed when they have to wear hand-me-downs that are already worn out. Adults also want to look presentable when they go for job interviews. .
We are planning a banquet for next spring to raise funds, so continue to check us out on Facebook for more information. If anyone, or business, would like to help us by underwriting this venture, please contact the Clothes Closet at 479-783-8150.
"NEW SOCKS ARE GOOD FOR THE SOUL"
In loving memory of Augustina F. "Teter" Lovoi.
Teter was an incredibly devoted aunt to her 28 nieces and nephews. As children, each of them received a pair of socks chosen just for them at Christmas. In memory of her fun-loving spirit, a "Teter's Sock Drawer" has been created, by the nieces and nephews, at the Golden Rule Clothes Closet. You can help by donating NEW SOCKS to the Clothes Closet. Deliver, or ship, a "Box of Socks" to: Teter's Sock Drawer c/o GRCC, 212 N. 3rd St., Fort Smith, AR 72901.

Some data from 2014 visits to the Clothes Closet:
Based on the IRS table of donation values, over $880,000 worth of clothing and other items were distributed to our clients. There were 7,377 clients served yielding over 44,000 visits by these clients. Almost 89% of the distributions ($781,000) were made to Fort Smith residents, and 96% of them covering Arkansas and 4% in Oklahoma. These distributions are free to our clients.
Monetary donations can be made directly to the Golden Rule Clothes Closet by sending them to Director, Clyde Chaney, 1903 Hendricks Blvd, Fort Smith, AR 72903
We need volunteers. One doesn't have to have any special skills. If you have free time, we have a job for you. There is sorting, cleaning and repairing of clothes, stocking the shelves, and general housekeeping.
All serviceable clothing and household items are welcome. Large size clothing, heavy coats, and shoes are always in short supply.
We also need someone to sponsor an annual charitable event to provide a dependable cash flow. We are a United Way supported agency, and while their funds are very needed and helpful, they are not enough to keep us operating.
Anyone interrested in helping please call the Clothes Closet at 479-783-8150.
