Operating as usual

On Saturday (Oct. 24), Fort Smith Police received multiple gunshot-related calls, which started at a car wash on 50th and Wirsing. Other calls came in from around 4600 Wirsing. Patrol searched and found several shell casings in the reported areas.

Thanks to some impressive citizen surveillance systems, FSPD Detectives were able to identify a black Tahoe and a small silver passenger car as being involved. Further investigation identified Darren Jones as the suspect driving the Tahoe. He was later taken into custody from a residence on the east side of town without incident. The vehicle, gun, ammo, and several narcotic-related items were also located.

Detectives are still working to identify other parties involved in this incident, and this is still an active investigation. Anyone with information about this crime should contact the FSPD Criminal Investigations Division at 479-709-5116.

We would like to thank our Patrol Officers, Dispatchers, and Detectives for their hard work on this case. We would also like to thank the citizens whose cooperation was instrumental to being able to identify these parties so quickly and make the arrest.

Thrilled to be back with our friends at the Riverview Hope Campus for October Meal Service. Thank you for having us. Mask up, and come have a bite!

Thursday night was SWAT Night at our Citizens’ Police Academy. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and speak to our SWAT Team members. We always love these chances to interact!

The FSPD SWAT Team is a group of officers that receive special training and tools to deal with high-risk situations. They constantly work under the premises held by the FSPD that the sanctity of life is paramount to all that we do.

You just never know who will turn up for #FSPDFoodPatrol! Thank you, Mayor George McGill, for coming out to Allied Gardens today and joining in on the fun!

FSPD was honored to support our friends at the Riverview Hope Campus for today’s Emergency Shelter Ribbon Cutting.

Thank you so much for sharing. Purrrfecct cooperation, Everyone!

Our good FSFD and FS Animal Control came to the rescue of a small kitten trapped in the window well of the museum basement this morning. Kitty cat was a trapeze artist, and this building is impenetrable, but they found a way to get to the lucky kitten!

Week 5 of our Citizens Police Academy was DWI Investigations/Deterrence, Motors Unit, and Accident Investigations. It was a very informative evening that ended with a motorcycle demonstration!🏍

Great breakfast service at Hope Campus today! See ya next month!😁

We love that our K9 Officers and their partners got to take part in this exciting new addition! Thank you, Southwest Times Record, for capturing the moment!

The Fort Smith Police Department today makes the bittersweet announcement that our beloved colleague and fellow Officer K9 Ringo will be retiring from service. K9 Ringo is 9 years old. He began his service to the community under now-Sgt. Keith Shelby in 2014. As a veteran of our growing K9 Unit, Ringo has aided in numerous arrests and seizures that have made the streets of Fort Smith safer.

K9 Ringo and Sgt. Shelby have also been active in community events and demonstrations. In fact, these opportunities to interact with the public were "one of our favorite assignments," Sgt. Shelby acknowledged. "We have had the honor to meet so many in the community who all love the K9s and their handlers. I believe a K9 team is one of the best assets of the Department for both drug interdiction and community involvement."

K9 Ringo will continue to live with Sgt. Shelby in his retirement. We congratulate him on a job well done and wish him many more years of well-deserved rest and relaxation with Sgt. Shelby and his family.

Please help us congratulate our October Employee of the Month!
