Happy Citizenship Day!
The Office of Mayor George McGill, has worked hard to support, protect and recognize our immigrant communities.
Despite the challenges this year has brought, municipal offices across the country are organizing virtual citizenship workshops, safe in-person spaces, PSAs, community forums (+ more!) to assist lawful permanent residents on their path to Citizenship.

**ATTENTION FORT SMITH**

It’s time for us to once again showcase our legendary grace and kindness. Workers from the Census Bureau will be out in our community for the next month knocking on doors and getting the vital information we need to be counted in this year’s census. I would ask everyone to be patient with these workers as they perform a vital task that’s essential to our city receiving the dollars and well-funded programs that we need from Washington DC and Little Rock. Thank you for your help! #2020Census

Fort Smith Public Schools Teacher Named Semi-Finalist for Arkansas Teacher of the Year

Fort Smith Public Schools' Teacher Susanna Post was named a state semi-finalist for Arkansas Teacher of the Year today at the Arkansas Governor's Mansion in Little Rock. Ms. Post was one of four semi-finalists. Ms. Post is a 9-12 Grade Math and Business Technology instructor at Belle Point Center, a New Tech Academy.

"It is such an honor to be a state semi-finalist considering the talent in this room. The Secretary of Education, the Governor, and the State Board Chairwoman discussed challenges facing this year and I am looking forward to leading and learning as we begin the 2020-2021 school year,” said Susanna

“Ms. Post represents the excellence in instruction, leadership and the heart of FSPS teachers. It is a privilege to see her talent recognized by our state leaders," said Dr. Ginni McDonald, Director of Secondary Education, Fort Smith Public Schools.

A Message from Mayor George McGill;

I want to begin by saying that I understand the passion and concern that people have around the recent Peacemaker Festival. To answer a rumor that has been swirling around social media, I was not a "deciding vote" to approve this event. Peacemaker went through a comprehensive approval process with the Arkansas Department of Health. We should also remember that the Peacemaker Festival is organized by volunteers who bring world-class musical entertainment to the River Valley and donate proceeds to the arts community and local charities.

In a free and open society, it's impossible to eliminate risks. So, when presented with an opportunity to enjoy a local music festival, a relatively small number of people, indeed far fewer than would have normally attended, made an eyes-open decision to attend an event that was reviewed and vetted by the ADH.

To their credit, the ADH and other state agencies remained engaged during the festival. On-site Alcoholic Beverage Control Board agents thoroughly observed and investigated the activities of organizers and attendees. Ultimately, some people fell short of compliance goals and a fine is likely to be levied. It's my hope that the ADH continues to remain engaged in following-up on the Peacemaker event. I urge the ADH to use this experience to learn more and improve where necessary for the continued health and safety of our great state.

Finally, I would request that our community continues to show kindness and grace with one another as we discuss and debate this event. Have a good evening!

Do your Part! Complete the 2020 Census today!

The US Constitution requires that every 10 years, the federal government take a count, or a census, of America's population. The census is a very important measurement of our City, as these numbers will be used for the next ten years for a number of purposes, including determines how many Representatives each state gets in Congress and redrawing district boundaries. Communities rely on census statistics to plan for a variety of resident needs, including new roads, schools, and emergency services.

Malicious cyber activity with regard to COVID-19 is continuing to increase. Below are three recent examples of smishing attacks sent to users’ phones. “Smishing” is like phishing but uses text messages instead of email.

In this case the scammers tried to lure users into thinking it was a legitimate message by making it appear as though it came from the Government or GMAIL.

The links in these scams were identified as a “Banking Trojan” known as (Cerberus) But make no mistake, clicking on these types of Trojans are designed to steal your financial information and other sensitive data.

Here’s a few tips to help keep everyone safe:

• If you’re ever in doubt about the validity of a message,
please call the organization on their official number as it
appears on their website.

• Don’t call the phone number, click links or respond to an
email address contained in the message, as this likely
belongs to the scammer and may expose sensitive
information.

𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻—

Baptist Health has set up visitor restrictions to support infection prevention and to keep our patients, visitors, caregivers and facilities safe during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Current visitor restrictions are modeled from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Arkansas Department of Health guidelines.

Baptist Health currently has restrictions for people entering facilities for purposes other than to receive medical care or visit a patient or family member.

Visitors wishing to see patients will be limited to patient rooms only. All visitors must remain in the patient’s room or they will be asked kindly to leave the building.

In addition, Baptist Health is suspending access to all common areas such as public waiting rooms and hospital cafeterias, which will only be available for hospital employees to get food.

Update: These restrictions now apply at Mercy hospital locations in Booneville, Ozark, Paris and Waldron as well. Hospital entry is only through the emergency room at these locations.

While national attention around COVID-19 continues to accelerate, the healing ministry of Mercy remains focused on the safety and health of our patients and co-workers. Mercy leaders are working around the clock to keep our community safe.
Out of an abundance of caution, our next critical step in safeguarding our patients and co-workers is to begin enforcing restricted visitor access. Effective at 6 a.m. Saturday, March 14, Mercy Fort Smith will limit access to one visitor per Mercy patient. Two visitors will be allowed at a time in the pediatric unit and in labor & delivery. Visitors will be allowed in Mercy from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and will be able to enter the hospital through the medical building or main entrance. Each patient’s one visitor must meet the following criteria:
* Visitors must be 16 years or older.
* Visitors must be fever-free, with a temperature below 100.4 degrees.
* Visitors must be cough-free.
Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis and include visitors for any patients nearing the end of life. Hospital services will not be impacted.
“The safety of our patients, visitors and co-workers is of the utmost importance,” said Ryan Gehrig, president of Mercy Hospital Fort Smith. “We realize this new policy may create an inconvenience for our visitors, but we must prevent unnecessary exposure to our patients and caregivers.”
