Washington County, Wisconsin Sheriff's Office
Here is one of the most recent COVID-19 scams that was just brought to our attention today. We know it is a scam, but we leaned on our Washington County IT Department to tell us exactly what they saw in the email.
The first thing that stands out is the gov.us or penalty-gov.us. Any government site would end in “.gov”. The “.us” domain is one that anyone can register. A true “.gov” domain is vetted and much harder to get.
The second issue is the wording and the use of “3 occasions” and “you have been recorded”. It simply sounds odd with no detail. Typically the people creating these emails are not from the United States and make spelling and grammatical mistakes. The three occasions seems a bit odd because the total is $38. That means each ticket is $12.666666. Also the use of the number “3” instead of the word seems grammatically odd. Usually numbers one through nine are spelled out.
Finally, if you were to hover over the hyperlinks in the email, you will most certainly go to another site, which might download malware or trick you into putting in more personal information.
Please do not fall victim.
fox6now.com MADISON -- The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) announced today that more than 215,000 FoodShare households will be receiving additional benefits.
