Such a sweet story 💙
"I am seeing so many posts of Jesse’s friends going off or getting ready to go off to college. I am am so, so happy for each one of them. They will all do great things I have no doubts.
I have been asked, 'What’s Jesse doing?’ I never had to verbalize it before. Thought about it, worried about it, and prayed about it but never ever verbalized it out loud.
I was in Target with Jesse. He was playing with a toddler in front of us in line who had been fussing~ but stopped when Jesse engaged him.
His mom and I chatted and she questioned, 'How old is he, he is so sweet ~ so good with kids?’ ‘Eighteen.' I answered.
She excitedly asked, 'Did he have his college visits and pick where he’s going ~OHHH this is the summer of fun.’ I paused and before I knew it, tears were flowing. For the very first time, I felt sad for him. I felt so sad. (Hate myself for it).
I explained, maybe even defended, a bit. 'He has high functioning Autism and a learning disability we are not doing college visits, Ummm He’s not going to college, he’s going to work.'
Tears flowed. She hugged me. I let her. This complete stranger consoled me; mom to mom. She went on to tell me how special he seemed.
She is so right. He is on his own path. I am super proud of him. Amazed at all the things he has accomplished.
I can’t imagine HAVING to function in a 'neuro typical' world with an atypically functioning brain. But HE DOES IT.
Jesse has accomplished so much in the face of not only Autism, but dyslexia and on top of that, Crohn’s disease.
Guess what? With needed supports along the way. He is amazing. Truly.
Multiple teachers and therapists and doctors have been invaluable to us. He has his own little village.
He worked all summer at PHS as a summer custodian and loved it. Every second of it. He was so proud of himself and we are so proud of him. He got up on time, made his lunch, and off he was ~ to be at work by 7am: willingly, and much of the time all on his own.
The summer job has come to an end. He wants to work. He can’t wait to 'go back.’ He has applied for a position as a ‘substitute’ custodian at PHS and is hoping for a full time gig soon.
We helped him study and practice to get his driver’s license and now we’ll work to help him find full time work. And we are in awe of his perseverance."
