IMPORTANT UPDATE: The FDA and CDC have recently recommended a booster mRNA vaccine for patients with compromised immune systems. If you have a cancer diagnosis which suppresses your immune system, or if you have received or are receiving active cancer treatment, we support your getting a booster mRNA vaccine. A booster dose is especially recommended for those in the following circumstances: a diagnosis of leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, bone marrow diseases, or other cancer patients who are currently receiving chemotherapy or have received chemotherapy in the past 6 months.

You do not need a doctor’s order or note to receive a booster shot. This includes either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Please contact your local vaccine clinic, or find a vaccine at http://vaccines.gov

April was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer in January 2003. She quickly began her journey with Dr. Orcutt at Charleston Oncology, undergoing frequent chemo treatments and scans. She now celebrates 18 years being cancer-free! Read her #nationalcancersurvivormonth message below:

"In January 2003 with a 2-month-old baby girl, I (29 years old) was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Dr. Orcutt and my family soon became “friends.” After six chemo treatments every other week followed by radiation therapy and of course many, many, many CT scans and nuclear bones scans with a few MRIs thrown in and TONS of prayers...I am a survivor! All along I never thought of myself as a survivor- I was just surviving until the next test or next scan or next appointment. Dr. Orcutt was always cautious always looking out for my best interest. 18 years! Yes, 18 years cancer free and now with an 18-year-old high school graduate. I told him at my most recent appointment that we had come a long way. This is true!"

She experienced a wave of emotions after the diagnosis and became fearful of missing her daughter’s life milestones, including her wedding. Dr. Keogh and his team were there for Jayne as she began her cancer journey. Now in remission, Jayne attended her daughter's graduation from MUSC and watched her marry the man of her dreams.
