On the scene…
Who: Stark County Courthouse Bicentennial Committee
What: Trumpeter’s Ball
Where: Canton Cultural Center
Why: Celebrate the bicentennial of the courthouse
The Courthouse Angels greeted 400 guests at the Trumpeter’s Ball, held at the Canton Cultural Center on Saturday evening.
The ball capped a weekend of events celebrating the bicentennial of the Stark County Courthouse, which began Friday evening with an open house at the historic building.
Judge Kristin Farmer and Magistrate Natalie Haupt chaired the Trumpeter’s Ball, where the angel theme continued, with striking table centerpieces designed by Janie Brown of Interior Debris. Guests received keepsake holiday angel ornaments.
Stark County Common Pleas Judge Taryn Heath, who chaired the committee planning the bicentennial celebration, welcomed guests and thanked sponsors for supporting the gala events.
“We were overwhelmed when 1,500 people toured the courthouse Friday evening, viewing the historic exhibits,” Heath said. Friday’s events also included a talk by Ohio Supreme Court Justice William O’Neill and a performance of The Andersonville Trial by the Courthouse Players, a group of lawyers and judges who perform legal dramas.
“What a great celebration — 200 years in the planning” Canton Mayor Tom Bernabei commented as he enjoyed the event with his wife, Bebe, Ellie and Matt Hull, Judge Frank Forchione, Jeff and Heather Fisher, Judge Scott and Monica Gwin, Janet Weir Creighton, and Allen and Christine Schulman.
“This reminds me of an old Italian saying, cent’anni, may you live 100 years, except this is due cent’anni, — 200 years,” committee member Al Albacete said as he enjoyed the event with his wife, Pat, and retired Judge John Milligan and his wife, Phyllis.
Canton Law Director Joe Martuccio dined with Jason and Holly Reese, Lou and Jennifer Giavasis, Kristin Bates and Bill Meaden. Server Jeri Ridgeway enjoyed seeing old friends Wick Hartung and Mary Dale Lemmon.
“I’ve been a server at Brookside Country Club for 47 years, and watched them grow up,” she added.
Judge John Haas, who was recognized as the longest-serving judge in the Stark County Courthouse, received a standing ovation from the crowd, including Judge John Wise and his wife, Kathy, Mark and Betty Gaye Skakun, Brian and Lindsay Zimmerman, Ron Dougherty, David and Loretta Beule, Sean Steward, Hillary Conidi, Phil Giavasis and Ashley Rich.
Following dinner, LaFlavour provided music for dancing.
