The National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) was created in January of 1999 to serve as a national resource for programs and professionals assisting young people beleaguered by emotional and behavioral difficulties. The Association is governed by an elected, volunteer Board of Directors comprised of representatives from the NATSAP membership.

Mission: NATSAP publishes a directory annually to inform professionals, programs, and families about the many residential placement alternatives available to help struggling young people.

Sometimes the best thing you can do to take care of yourself, is to be yourself. #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

According to NAMI, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US. Suicidal thoughts are treatable, and with treatment suicide can be prevented. Help is available. If you or a loved one is at immediate risk, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255.

From the staff at NATSAP, we hope you have a wonderful weekend. Here are some tips in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month.

An obstacle for individuals seeking treatment for mental health conditions is insurance coverage. Without coverage, treatment may be unaffordable. You can make a difference by reaching out to your local and state representatives and continuing to raise awareness on the issues.

What is school refusal?

Do you remember how you felt when you first started attending school? How about when you transitioned to high school? If so, you likely remember some stress while adjusting to being away from family, making friends, settling into new routines, and achieving good grades. For some students, that stress doesn’t go away quite so easily and may lead to a deeper struggle. [ 475 more words ]

Many people who live with a mental illness face Stigma. Stigma in the face of a mental health condition can appear as discrimination or blame and can lead to feelings of shame and worthlessness. Stigma may also impede the treatment process. #breakthestigma is a campaign hoping to change these reactions into ones of empathy, compassion and understanding.

When Teenage Moodiness Becomes a Mental Health Concern

During the teenage years, emotions can change without warning and seemingly without reason. Oftentimes a teen’s moodiness can be attributed to life changes occurring at that time, but how do you know when the ever-changing moods are just part of puberty or if they’re a sign of something deeper? What is a mood disorder? According to the National Institute of Mental Health, about 14 percent of youth between the ages of 13 and 18 will have a mood disorder, which manifests as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or irritability. Hands-On Teacher Experience Enhances Academics

TJ Penrod, Social Studies Teacher at CERTS Programs Kolob Canyon and Moonridge Academy is passionate about teaching his students. He is innovative and creative in his teaching method providing students a variety of modalities to fully experience history. He makes learning interesting, memorable and hands-on. TJ finds that this type of teaching is highly effective in a therapeutic learning environment such as residential treatment where students often arrive bringing a history of school refusal or a high degree of anxiety associated with academics. [03/14/19]   If you had the opportunity to discover the VERY Best Practices in the industry, what would you like to know? What would you like to teach other programs? Interested in learning about what other programs are doing with their therapeutic model?

As a NATSAP member benefit, we have developed a survey that will allow for a peek behind the curtain at NATSAP therapeutic treatment centers. As your program may find these statistics useful, we will send out the results to all participants after regional and national totals have been compiled. Only a regional and national analysis will be distributed. Individual program and state data will not be released under any circumstances.

All surveys must be completed by close of business on Friday, March 29th, 2019. Contact [email protected] to receive a link to the survey.

Family Therapy Training Institute

NATSAP will be hosting its inaugural Family Therapy Training Institute (FTTI) in conjunction with the NATSAP Utah Regional Conference, May 15th and 16th at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center.

The purpose of the FTTI will be therapeutic interventional skill building within the framework on General Systems Theory – treating the family as a client as opposed to focus on a single family member as the “Identified patient.”

The primary focus of the Institute is centered in skill building which is best accomplished in small groups of 3-5 therapists. Therefore, the enrollment is capped at 20 participants, providing optimal interaction between faculty members and attendees.

We are looking for clinicians with a full case load to participate in this event. Registration is open to members only. There are only a few spots left!!
