The Montessori Comeback

forbes.com Dr. Montessori originally developed her pedagogical approach for low-income children in Rome. Unfortunately, in the U.S., the Montessori model was largely relegated to private schools. However, the spread of public school choice has led to a rapid growth in the number of public Montessori schools.

As a young father, watching his daughter go through her life experiences, film director Alexandre Mourot discovered the Montessori approach and decided to set his camera up in a children’s house (3 to 6 years of age) in the oldest Montessori school in France.
Alexandre was warmly welcomed in a surprisingly calm and peaceful environment, filled with flowers, fruits and Montessori materials. He met happy children, who were free to move about, working alone or in small groups. The teacher remained very discreet. Some children were reading, others were making bread, doing division, laughing or sleeping.
The children guided the film director throughout the whole school year, helping him to understand the magic of their autonomy and self-esteem - the seeds of a new society of peace and freedom, which Maria Montessori dedicated her life work to.

Montessori Builds Innovators

Food preparation activities, which begin in our 2 year old classroom, become much more involved by the time the children are in our Elementary program. Here- two of our student chefs clean up after preparing a Chicken Pot Pie from scratch. Sharing food, that they have prepared themselves, as a community is one of the hallmarks of a Montessori education. #montessorimonday #practicallife #learningforlife

So exciting!!

Do you feel the energy? Have you heard the buzz?

If you haven't then you certainly will soon as Montessorians in the United States learn about the $2 billion committed by Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, and his wife MacKenzie to fund non-profit work supporting homeless families and to create "Montessori-inspired" preschools in low income areas.

Here is an excerpt from Jeff Bezos's statement in the linked article regarding Montessori education:

"The Day 1 Academies Fund will launch and operate a network of high-quality, full-scholarship, Montessori-inspired preschools in underserved communities. We will build an organization to directly operate these preschools. I'm excited about that because it will give us the opportunity to learn, invent, and improve. We'll use the same set of principles that have driven Amazon. Most important among those will be genuine, intense customer obsession. The child will be the customer. "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." And lighting that fire early is a giant leg up for any child."

Set up week has begun! All of our teachers are so excited to be sorting through beautiful new materials, preparing for the students arrivals next week. We cannot wait for the school year to begin!

We loved having Eagle Bear and the Southwest Dancers share their stories and traditions with us today!

In this picture, one of our two years olds in the YCC program has successfully cracked 12 eggs as part of the class's daily food preparation (corn bread muffins for Thanksgiving). The pride and confidence on his face as he accomplished his goal was a joy to behold.

Learning Soft Skills In Childhood Can Prevent Harder Problems Later

npr.org There's more to learn at school than reading and math. Teaching kids to control their emotions, solve problems and work well with others can help them succeed as teens and adults.

One of our 4 years olds used the movable alphabet this morning to spell out places he and his brother have visited. The movable letters allow the child to "write down" words as he or she determines each component sound. This series of exercises increases in difficulty from writing three letter works to writing stories.

The Montessori Method: An Education For Creating Innovators

diygenius.com A Montessori education helps students develop a love for learning by teaching them to be self-directed learners who can realize their creative potential.

Children use real plates, bowls and glasses in a Montessori environment (they also set the table themselves). By showing the children how to properly handle “real” things, children feel capable and empowered. Natural consequences (drop a plate and it breaks) enable children to adjust their movements to properly care for their environment.
