Whitman Drama

Whitman Drama

Founded in 1962, Walt Whitman High School's drama program is award winning and internationally recognized.

Whitman Drama is structured very much like a conservatory program. Its students participate in multiple theater components -- everything from onstage performance to design to production management. Our focus is on the process of artistic development rather than the end product. We value intelligence, commitment, diversity and an understanding of the human condition by applying techniques based in realism. Whitman Drama especially emphasizes student involvement and ownership. We are based in Bethesda, Maryland.

Production Staff Interviews for 2019-2020

To those interested in interviewing for Production Staff positions for the 2019-2020 season (this is separate from Talent Show specific positions):

Interviews will be held on Tuesday, May 28th and Wednesday, May 29th. You may come either day but interviews will finish at 5:30 both days. For the interview you will be required to bring:

- A large scale design relevant to your position for a show that you select (If you are applying for a non-design role, consider what other materials you would need to produce throughout the year. This may include a show binder, email samples, plots, etc.)
- A budget for two departments (one of which should be for your own department)
- An essay on why you want the position and what you will contribute (650-1000 words)
- A resume with outside technical work and a list of concrete skills (optional, but recommended)

These requirements are meant to be open ended; this interview is what you make of it and what you feel best represents you and your qualifications.

Please understand that these applications are taken more seriously than traditional tech interviews; a Production Staff position is held for one full season, and the effort you contribute to your interview will should reflect your future dedication to the role.

[03/25/19]   Congrats to this years one acts and their directors! Auditions will be held Monday (3/25) and Tuesday (3/26) in the chorus room!

Pandora’s Box - Emmy Lane
Looking Glass - Callia Chuang
Don’t Swipe - Caroline Itzkoff
Ladies Room - Lily James
The Philadelphia - Kira Gandolfo

Pandora’s Box:
It’s opens with a girl opening up Pandora’s box. Whether or not she knows what she is getting herself into is TBD. Pandora’s box as you may know holds the seven deadly sins. She opens this box and out comes the seven deadly dancers. Each tells a story through dance of multiple genres including modern, lyrical, ballet, even hip hop, that portrays how the legend of the seven sins is translated into today’s society, exploring issues such as prioritizing money, sexual abuse, neglect, unnecessary violence and so on. The cast would ideally be at least 8 dancers but willing to accommodate as many as needed.

Looking Glass:
This piece, entitled "Looking Glass," will use the symbol of a mirror to explore the themes of facing one’s insecurities and the constant pressure to live up to societal standards. This piece’s commentary on the effects of social pressures on girls’ mental health is more pressing and relevant than ever.

Don’t Swipe:
The story focuses on Ryan and Julie, who accidentally meet each other in a cafe while waiting for their dates. Ryan is waiting for Amanda (who never shows), a good Christian girl who has his parents’ approval. Julie is waiting for Nick, a twenty-three-year-old kayaker who is sweet and kind, or so she thinks. After a mix up of coffees, Ryan and Julie start a conversation about dating experiences and their chemistry becomes obvious. In the back of the cafe, David and his boss Nicole seem like normal people focused on business, but in reality, David is consumed by his doomed crush on her, a workaholic. Angie and Madison are the waitresses in the cafe. Madison sports a humorously huge crush on Ryan, bumping into furniture and messing up orders due to her attraction. Meanwhile, Angie constantly pokes fun at the events unfolding throughout the story.

Ladies Room:
A 12 person, female play. Takes place in the bathroom on prom night where girls are taking a break from their dates and the prom. By the end of the night, hearts are broken, revealed, and shared. A relatable, sometimes funny, but very truthful telling of teenage girls in this day and age. Runs about 25 mins.

The Philadelphia:
is a short comedy about two friends in NYC. One is experiencing a day where he can’t get anything he asks for. The other is trying to calm his friend down, meanwhile experiencing a catty and sassy waitress. There are three characters, but the possibility to add more actors in the background. It is a short comedy (run time of about 12 minutes).
