We're in a fight to make community a common enterprise. Join us!

The Harwood Institute for Public Innovation is a nonpartisan, independent nonprofit that teaches, coaches and inspires people and organizations to solve pressing problems and change how communities work together. Founded1988, the Institute partners with some of the world's largest nonprofits and our tools and frameworks have spread to all 50 states in the U.S., across Australia and Canada, and have been used by individuals in more than 40 countries worldwide. The people we teach and coach, called public innovators, are the leaders that move our communities forward. They come from nonprofits, businesses, government, the media, and educational and religious organizations. They are an essential ingredient to solving our most vexing challenges. We develop these individuals in a practice we call Turning Outward - using the community, not your conference room, as the reference point for your choices and judgments.

The Harwood Institute has worked with communities, organizations and individuals across the country – from Flint, Michigan to Las Vegas, Nevada and from Binghamton, New York to San Francisco. Recently we have expanded internationally, working with partners in Australia. Harwood principles have been successfully applied in the public, private, academic, and non-profit sectors, including, public libraries and school systems, newspapers and public broadcasting, United Ways and other community-based organizations. Harwood helps these organizations and individuals turn outward and engage with their communities in new ways.

Mission: The Harwood Institute is a national not-for-profit organization that teaches and coaches people and organizations to solve pressing problems and change how communities work together.

Reminding Ourselves Who We Are -- and Can Become

Our nation is in crisis. Now, more than ever, we must remind ourselves who we are—and can become. On this special edition of TURNING OUTWARD TOGETHER, Rich Harwood reflects on the current state of our country, and asks us to remind ourselves of some basic tenets of who we are and who we can become.

Our nation is in crisis. Now, more than ever, we must remind ourselves who we are—and can become. At 4 p.m. EST today, Rich Harwood will be going live on Facebook to tackle questions like:

- What are the basic tenets of who we are?
- Do we believe dignity is for all people?
- Is hope more than a campaign slogan?
- What does it mean to make community a common enterprise?
- How can we come to grips with our history and own the deep stains in our nation’s civic fabric?

If you're struggling with what to do or where to turn, please join us for this discussion today at 4.

Rich Harwood

Local leaders are critical to blazing a new path forward for our communities and our country. These are the very same individuals we will need to rely on to respond to the pain and rage so many Americans are expressing about issues of race and justice. We can't be silent.
