We're feeling hopeful lately. Are you?
Next weekend, please join us for a live Narrative Medicine workshop on HOPE.
This Zoom workshop is based on the principles and practices of Narrative Medicine, an interdisciplinary field emerging from Columbia Medical School where medicine meets the arts. Here, the stories found in literature, poetry, and painting become wellsprings of community connection, social justice, and self discovery.
We will have two sections so our friends in the US, the UK, and Australia can all attend:
Friday November 13 at 5-6 PM Central Time (US and Canada)
Sunday November 15 st 12-1 PM Central Time (US and Canada)
This live Zoom workshop is $15 dollars, but if you cannot afford the registration price because of present hardship, please contact us at [email protected]. If you are a first responder who works directly with COVID-19 patients, this workshop is free; just email us for the coupon code.
narrativerx.thinkific.com A one-hour round table for close reading, creative writing, and community building through the arts.
Big news, RISE Family!
We are happy to announce that, on December 1 2020, we will be relocating to the Be Well Austin Center right across the street at 1908 West Koenig Lane.
Though COVID threw us for a loop, we are so grateful to remain part of the Brentwood/Allendale community. Our new studio is walking distance from our old studio; you can even see Be Well from our current patio!
The new studio space has ample parking, a spacious waiting room, a private entrance, and access to lots of other wellness practices too. We can't wait to show you our new digs!
We are also proud to present Larisa West as RISE’s new co-owner and managing partner! Larisa has been working diligently toward this role for the past five years. Under her expert guidance, we know this company will continue to provide the best bodywork and the kindest customer service in town.
Like most humans this year, we have learned how to hunker down, cut back, and prioritize what’s really important. Along the way we realized that RISE was never a place at all, but a relationship— the connection we share as therapists, clients, and partners in community wellness. We look forward to keeping YOU our priority!
In honor of our move, book a massage at our new location any time from Dec 1-Dec 14 and receive $25 off your service. Just write “Welcome Home” in the “Notes” section in order to redeem. (Massage must take place between Dec 1 and Dec 14 2020.)
P.S. Sage Acupuncture, specializing in fertility and oncology, is taking over our old building at 1707 W Koenig. They are a fantastic group! Swing by and welcome them to the neighborhood.
P.P.S. Please, when you can, support local business. We need each other now more than ever.

At RISE, we believe that black lives matter. Racist violence and murder of black people has been made permissible overtly and covertly in this nation since its very inception. We believe it’s time (past time!) to hold ourselves accountable, to do anti-racist work, and to take care of one another. If you've been injured (physically or emotionally) as a result of protesting this week, please contact us for discounted rates on massage and bodywork. We stand with you. Natasha BentonJulia Traylor
We just spent the weekend fine-tuning our sanitation protocol, and we are so excited to welcome you back to the massage table! To limit exposure, we are operating at 50% capacity, so book your appointment before the books fill!
Dear RISE Fam,
Are you ready for the best post-apocalyptic massage of all time? We're back in action and ready to soothe those quarantined muscles and minds! We are scheduled to reopen on a limited basis beginning Monday June 1-- book now to reserve your spot!
While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your safety and health. By its very nature, massage, stretch, and bodywork requires skin-to-skin contact, and infection control has always been a top priority for our practice. As we navigate life with additional requirements and modify existing measures due to the coronavirus, please help us support all of our clients by cooperating with some new requirements.
RISE Massage, Stretch, and Wellness follows Practice Guidelines recommended by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB), along with infection control recommendations made by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Texas State Government. You may see some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We made these changes to help protect our clients and ourselves. For example:
👉All clients must sign our COVID-19 waiver and update their health history by filling out our updated intake form (even if you've filled out an intake form in the past). You will not be able to enter the building until this waiver has been signed electronically.
👉When you arrive at the office, we’ll ask that you wait in your vehicle and call the clinic at (512)645-0337 to let us know you've arrived. This ensures that we don’t have too many people in the reception area at one time.
👉Your therapist will greet you at the door and use a no-touch thermal temperature screening to confirm that you don’t have a temperature over 100 degrees F.
👉We will ask you if you have developed any symptoms of illness since filling out the intake form. If you feel ill on the day of your session, there is no penalty for canceling your appointment. Massage is not advised if you have any symptoms of illness.
👉Please bring a face mask to use while you are in the building and during your massage.
👉We will ask you to wash your hands upon entry to the building and to use hand sanitizer before touching your face mask.
We look forward to seeing you again, and we are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we are taking to keep you, and every client, safe at RISE Massage, Stretch, and Wellness.
Thank you for being a valued client and friend of our practice. We cherish your trust and look forward to welcoming you back to a safe, therapeutic touch environment.

📣Pain Care Professionals📣: This One's For You 💗
Looking for a career-enhancing, community-building, soul-nurturing way to conquer the apocalypse? Join us for an 8-week ONLINE Narrative Medicine course designed specifically for pain care providers beginning Monday May 4th!
This program is based on the principles and practices of Narrative Medicine, an interdisciplinary field emerging from Columbia Medical School that uses close reading, radical listening, and creative writing to address the needs of all who seek and deliver healthcare. In simpler terms, Narrative Medicine is a meeting place for medicine and the arts—a place where the narratives found in literature, poetry, and painting become wellsprings of connection and self-discovery.
Each week we will be delving into artwork, philosophy, and creative exercises designed for those who work with people in pain. Assignments can be completed at your own pace with weekly “due dates” and discussion boards that keep our classroom collaborative and co-creative.
We think the time is better than ever to practice self-care and community-building through the arts. Because of global economic challenges due to COVID-19, we’ve cut the price of the course down by over 50%. The entire 8-week course is now just $239 with the code: InThisTogether. And we are offering scholarships to those who are in serious hardship too— just reach out to us at [email protected] to apply for reduced rates.
To register, or to learn more about our background and our mission, visit narrativerx.com and join our online learning community!
Weekly Learning Objectives:
🤓 Week 1: Become more attuned to the inner workings of art in order to become more attentive to the stories of your patients.
🤝Week 2: Explore the “third space” between a storyteller and a listener where history is interpreted, meaning is negotiated, and futures are formed in collaboration.
💝 Week 3: Ground your observations in the material details of a patient’s story. Examine symbolism as a cognitive tool for communicating and managing pain.
🕵♂ Week 4: Cultivate a practice of self-assessment and acknowledge your biases. Recognize that all self-stories are incomplete, contingent, and evolving.
🕘 Week 5: Examine time as a flexible cognitive framework that is relative to one’s lived experiences. Become attuned to your patient’s lived experiences of time.
✊ Week 6: Study a story’s power to transform, empower, and amplify. Reflect on ethical practices and promote social justice in medicine.
⚖ Week 7: Develop an ethical strategy for balancing care-giving with self-care. Combat feelings of isolation and burnout through creative practices and community-building.
🙆♀ Week 8: Bring your whole body to the task of storytelling and listening. Hear the body as it speaks. Be moved (and moved to action) by the stories of those in pain.
See what our students are saying:
👉“This course was a game changer for me on so many levels. The experience of connecting with others, sharing experiences, "talking story," and finding value and instruction in each other's journeys confirmed all of my biases about the importance of forming relationships and bonds with our patients as people -- not just as patients!”
👉“I discovered my voice, and I am comfortable sitting in the same room with it. I have never been able to say that for one moment of my forty nine years of life. Words can't express how much gratitude I feel to you both for providing the space for me to explore this. Seriously, thank you.”
👉“This whole course challenged my notion that I'm a pretty great listener, and not in a bad way! It renewed a keen attention to whole-body listening that I must have gotten soft on. So grateful for this!”
👉“This course helped locate me in my practice. By that I mean I recognize my role, my place in my interaction with the person before me in a way I didn’t before. I also appreciate that I cannot escape my own bias. I recognize I can include myself (self compassion) in the caring relationship with my patients.”
👉“I just want more!!!”
👉“My comfort in just being present to listen even in the absence of my own understanding has grown, actually it burst into life within this last course. This has given me a moment to pause and just be present. Connections can grow at different speeds. Allowing connections to have their own pace has opened up this comfort in the space and frees me to be present as a listener. It has been said before and I will continue to say it - Thank you 🙏 so much for all your time, dedication and expertise. It continues to be hands down the best course I have been on for professional and personal growth.”
👉“Professionally my listening skills and connection to patients and colleagues has benefited the most. Learning to pause and listen and the recognition that I actually wasn’t doing this as well as I thought before. Priceless!!”
👉“The support of like-minded souls was joyful, finding a tribe is healing when you feel on the edge of mainstream profession.”
👉“As this is the third course I have taken part in, I can see/ feel the effects of participation getting deeper and more intrinsic to my whole being. Listening and extracting salient and the most meaningful points from another's story has become second nature as it become apparent from their responses. Things have changed in me, that might also be due to other factors in my life, but I do feel like barriers have been overcome that I cannot easily put in words. ( Cheapest therapy ever 😘😊).”
👉“I have told so many colleagues about these courses and am so excited by how this may change healthcare!!”
