Q: How long have you been doing CrossFit?

A: Been about 4 years now. Give or take a little.
Q: How were you introduced to CrossFit?

A: My gf at the time found an on-ramp program at crossfit Eado in Houston and convinced me to do it. I was getting a little chubby and bored with the gold’s gym routine. So I went along with her to try it out. After the 6 week on-ramp I drank the kool-aid real hard and I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.
Q: What are your favorite movements?

A: My favorite movements are anything with butterflies or ring muscle ups. (Absolutely despise with a burning passion heavy thrusters)

Dogs of Karhu
Meet Chavelle our sweet little piggy-hippo. She is a 7 year old Blue Staffordshire Terrier. Her human is @hard_as_nails.

Chavelle is a regular at the gym and you can usually find her at the noon class, chillin’ on her Harry Potter blanket and....if you’re lucky enough she’ll cozy up on your lap. Her hobbies include bird watching at the pet store and diving for rocks.

Pacho is a regular at Crossfit Jääkarhu and the sweet baby of Coach @taytay_deering. He is a 2 year old brown lab. He loves long walks/runs/ on Lady Bird Lake. He is a hoarder of shoes, underwear, knee sleeves, gymnastics grips, jackets, etc etc etc. He is the sweetest boy and brings great energy to the gym!

Q: How long have you been doing CrossFit?

A: 9.5 years

Q: How did you get started?

A: Peer pressure. My friend Erin had posted pictures of herself doing pull-ups somewhere and I messaged her and asked her what that was. She told me it was this thing called CrossFit and I should come to a free I rounded up some other friends to go check it out. I was immediately hooked. The camaraderie, the fun, the community - it was everything I was looking for. That was 2010 at CrossFit Dallas Central...and I’ve never looked back. I’ve gone on to make CrossFit my entire life - even making a career out of it since 2011. And now it has brought me my awesome Karhu family.

Q: How long have you been doing crossfit?

A: It’s been about 2 1/2 months.

Q: How did you get started?

A: I got started by looking up crossfit gyms. I was tired of going to the gym and not getting things done. Crossfit has show me that working out doesn’t have to be boring.

Q: What are your favorite movements/workouts?

A: My favorite movements are squats ,deadlifts and jump rope. What I enjoy about CrossFit is pushing myself to get through the workouts that seem almost impossible to finish. Having the coaches there to encourage me to keep going is the best.

Each member of the team will choose one of the upper body pulling movements and have 1 minute to accumulate as many reps as possible. Once they have completed their 1 minute they will move directly into 1 min max effort double unders.

Each pair will work as a team to complete as many reps as possible in 10 min. The workout will be “I go, You go” style increasing by 2 reps each round. Both partners will complete 2 reps of each movement, 4 reps of each movement, 6 reps, etc, etc, etc. The score for this event will be total reps of both teams.

Each member of the team will have 2 min to row for max calories. This will be done relay style on a continuous clock and calorie count. Once an athlete is done with the row, he/she will move onto the front squats and begin establishing their 3 rep max. All members must complete the row and the Front Squats in 10 min. Teams can choose their order. There will be two scores for this workout: total calories and total weight.

Once all members have completed Event 1 and the 10 min cap has been reached, all members will move immediately into Event 2. Each male/female pair will have 6 min to complete the couplet of synchro bar facing burpees and toes-to-Bar. The score will be the total time it took for both pairs to complete Event 2.

Evolution 1 will be capped at 22 Minutes and will have a total of 3 scores.

Q: How long have you been doing CrossFit?
A: I started in Chicago back in September of 2017 and started at Karhu last June. Before that my only workout was playing sports and I didn't like going to the gym. When I did go, I wandered around like a lost child because I had no idea what I was doing.

Q: How did you get into it?
A: My friend convinced me to try it out after I asked him how he got into such great shape. I was skeptical, but also jealous of his transformation from desk jockey to beef cake so I gave it a shot. When I started I immediately loved the competition as well as how supportive everyone was. The support from coaches and other classmates helped me stick with it.

Q: What is your favorite movement/ workout?
A: I'm a fan of all the olympic lifts because it's all still pretty new and challenging to me. My favorite workouts are the Saturday partner WODs. The added strategy and pressure of not letting a teammate down make it easier to push yourself (to almost yak).

Coaching should be simple but effective. Just like in CrossFit, simple is not always easy but it gets the job done.

Our job is to take our athletes from Point A to Point B. That part is simple. The hard part is that every athlete has different limitations (mobility, flexibility, strength, coordination, injuries) and require different coaching cues in order to get from A to B as safely and as effectively as possible.

As a coach, have a process...a method to the madness. Organize your coaching tool belt and be prepared for anything. Keep adding to you tools to your belt.
