As most of you know, the City of Austin has closed Hancock Recreation Center, and our longstanding dance classes cannot be held there at present. The August dance classes are not a replacement for our normal dance classes, which we plan to get underway as soon as Hancock reopens.

Participants who wish to attend the August classes are asked to REGISTER IN ADVANCE on a first-come, first-served basis, and to send payment for the classes ahead of this event.

Price for the 8 hours of classes is $44/person ($88/couple). This is higher than our normal class fee because of the higher cost of the venue and the restriction on the size of group gatherings.

If you would like to participate in the August dance classes, please send an email to [email protected] dancers.org; confirmation and payment instructions will follow.

ABD Members & Guests:

This is a special notice to advise you of measures ABD is taking to try to make our adjustments to our present unusual circumstances a bit more palatable.

Why are we doing this?

We like to dance, folks, and we want to show that we are trying hard to keep ABD active.

Please renew your membership if you have let it lapse, and join us in August!

We Appreciate You Now More Than Ever!

This offer is retroactive to the beginning of 2020, and will be valid for those who sign up within 30 days from the date of this message (by August 23, 2020). You may apply for membership at http://www.austinballroomdancers.org/membership/.

[06/30/20]   Greetings from the ABD Board! We hope everyone is well and staying safe during these challenging times. We miss seeing and dancing with all of you!

The City of Austin and Travis County recently issued orders that prohibit social gatherings of 10 or more people until August 15, 2020. Austin Ballroom Dancers will comply with those orders to assist in slowing the spread of COVID-19, and we will not hold classes or dances until the orders are lifted.

Although we cannot dance together at present, please show your support for ABD by renewing your membership when it comes due.

Our current President and Secretary continue to serve in those positions until we can hold an election. We have some good news regarding a Board position that has been vacant. Bo Lebo has offered to serve as ABD Publicity Officer! At our meeting on June 28, the Board appointed Bo to fill that vacant position for a term that will expire in June 2022.

Once the gathering restrictions are lifted we will recruit an Election Committee consisting of three ABD members in good standing. They will seek candidates to serve as President and Secretary for terms that will expire in June 2022. If you are interested in finding out more about these opportunities to serve ABD, please contact any board member by using the email links on our website or calling our hot line.

We will provide an update in August regarding the status of ABD activities and when they may resume. Until then, please stay safe, stay well, and keep on dancing!

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of June Kelly. She was a beloved staple of classes and dances at Austin Ballroom Dancers, as well as a long-time board member. June was well-known in the dance community as a competitor and social Ballroom dancer. She will be immensely missed by all who knew her.

[04/27/20]   Hello from the ABD Board! We hope everyone is well and staying safe during these difficult times. We miss seeing and dancing with all of you!

We cannot meet because the venues where we have classes and dances are closed. Also, because dancing is a contact sport we need to maintain social distancing until is it safe to get back together. There is no projected date at this time for when we will be able to do that.

ABD finances are on a firm footing, but some of the expenses for running our organization continue, like insurance and website hosting. You can show your support for ABD by renewing your membership when it comes due.

You can also support ABD by volunteering to be on the Election Committee, or to serve in one of the three positions that will come open soon: President, Secretary, and Publicity Officer. Contact any board member to discuss these opportunities, using the links on our website.

On April 25, the Board amended the ABD Bylaws so that we can postpone the Annual Meeting and election until we can meet face to face again. The revised version is posted on our website.

We will provide an update as soon as we have new information. Stay well, and keep on dancing!

[03/30/20]   Because the Governor of Texas and Mayor of Austin have prohibited gatherings of 10 people or more until May 1, 2020, ABD classes and dances in April will be suspended until such time as those orders are rescinded.

The ABD Board continues to monitor the situation, and we will keep our members and guests informed of any changes to or extensions of this requirement. We miss seeing everyone! We look forward to dancing with you again as soon as it is safe to do so.

[03/16/20]   The World Health Organization has officially declared that we are in the midst of a global pandemic.

With the severity of the COVID 19 spreading and the mandatory facility closures for social and recreational activities from the City of Austin as part of the containment and mitigation measures as more positive coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Austin-Travis County , ABD must suspend all classes until further notice.

The safety and health of our members is our primary concern and we wish everyone to stay safe!!
