Treehouse Yoga

Treehouse Yoga

Treehouse Yoga is Austin's 100% donation-based yoga studio. Our instructors strive to provide an authentic practice that is accessible to all.

How to find us (from Mopac): Turn onto Wallingwood, then turn right into the complex where you'll see a sign on your left that says "Timberline Office Park" and a big directory. Turn into the first parking lot on the left and follow signs that say "Buildings 1-4". Building 1 is just right of Building 2 if you're facing south. Park near the front door of Building 1 and you'll see a sign that says "Treehouse Yoga: 3rd Floor". Walk in and take the stairs or the elevator up. Alternatively, you can park near the back of the building, near a parking garage in the basement with white vans that say "Child's Day" parked and walk around to the front of the building.

Last day of @treehouseyogaaustin , we hope to see you there!

Come by this Sunday and enjoy our space one last time. Two FREE classes offered as well as some light snacks and drinks. Thank you all so much and we hope to see everyone on Sunday. Much love 🙏🏼

Namaste friends, This week is the LAST WEEK to practice at Treehouse! Sunday will be our last day open and we are hosting two free classes at 3:30 and 5! Details to be posted tomorrow! We appreciate everyone that has stepped foot in our space and hope to see you all this week and Sunday! 🙏🏼

Dear Treehouse community, It's with a heavy heart that we share this news today. Because of a zoning restriction in our building complex, we are forced to close our doors to the public. What does this mean for you? Our last day open will be Sunday June 3rd, we will continue to do business with no changes to our schedule until then. We are no longer selling memberships or our "classpasses". Effective today we are a donation only studio (except those that have a membership or some classpasses left on account). We are cancelling all reoccurring memberships and encourage everyone to enjoy our space as much as possible until we have to close. We will be hosting a community appreciate event (details announced soon) on our last day open which will include some free classes, some snacks, and great company! We absolutely loved offering this space to you all and thank all of you so much for sharing your energy in our here. That includes our teachers, students, workshop hosts, work traders, and neighbors. If anyone has any questions at all, feel free to email us at [email protected]. Until next time

Namaste

The goal of tennis ball massage is to achieve a “release” by applying just the right amount of pressure: enough to do some good, but not enough to irritate your nervous system. The sensation should be clear and strong and satisfying, what we call “good pain.” If you are wincing or gritting your teeth, you need to be more gentle.

Lie down on a tennis ball, placing it in approximately the right location. You do not have to be precise. “Explore” by moving slowly and gently, until you’ve got just the right spot.

You need to be able to relax.
Once you have adjusted yourself to achieve the right pressure, relax as much as possible and wait for the sensation to fade to about eighty percent of the original intensity. This is the “release” — a change in the physiological state of the tissues, or a “melting” of the knot. This can take anywhere from ten seconds to several minutes.

Trigger point massage often provides only temporary relief. Here are some basic tips and tricks to help make it last as long as possible:
* Treat only a few knots at a time, starting with the worst spots.
* Use heat in conjunction with treatment.
* Avoid fatiguing the muscle for about 24 hours after treatment.
* Move and stretch the muscles after the release of each knot.

Why tennis balls probably help trigger points (extremely oversimplified version)
A knot or trigger point is a tiny spasm… maybe. It’s just a theory. The nerve that controls the muscle may be firing too quickly, and the tissue is full of (irritating) waste molecules produced by the “revving” tissue. Or it could be something else altogether. It’s all quite controversial,4 and pain is surprisingly mysterious.5
It’s also a scientific unknown if applying pressure is actually an effective treatment for trigger points.6 It may be more of a sensory distraction than an actual “cure.” Or it may have a biological effect on the trigger point. Two common ideas are that the pressure creates a small, local stretch that resolves the spasm just like stretching to relieve a larger spasm, and/or the pressure literally squeezes stagnant tissue fluids out of the area.

Regardless, it certainly feels good, and many people seem to experience profound relief from focused massage pressure. And it’s very cheap and safe to experiment with (as long as you don’t get carried away pressing on vulnerable anatomy).

Happy to announce we have added tennis balls to our prop collection. They can be very helpful for relieving tension before or after practice.

Here’s some interesting findings from recent research:

Does self‐myofascial release with a foam roll or roller‐massager such as tennis balls improve joint range of motion without effecting muscle performance?

The research suggests that both foam rolling and the roller massage may offer short‐term benefits for increasing sit and reach scores and joint ROM at the hip, knee, and ankle without affecting muscle performance. These finding suggest that SMR using a foam roll for thirty seconds to one minute (2 to 5 sessions) or roller massager for five seconds to two minutes (2 to 5 sessions) may be beneficial for enhancing joint flexibility as a pre‐exercise warmup and cool down due to its short‐term benefits. Also, that SMR may have better effects when combined with static stretching after exercise. It has been postulated that ROM changes may be due to the altered viscoelastic and thixotropic property (gel‐like) of the fascia, increases in intramuscular temperate and blood flow due to friction of the foam roll, alterations in muscle‐spindle length or stretch perception, and the foam roller mechanically breaking down scar tissue and remobilizing fascia back to a gel‐like state.

Intro to Yoga Class this Sunday at 2PM!

Did you know that most modern yoga traces back to one man born 130 years ago?

Did you know that in yoga philosophy there are three primary tendencies (doshas) of people that shape all of our thoughts and behavior?

Did you know you can find your where your spine is immobile and adjust it with one simple yoga exercise?

You’ve probably heard the breath is the most important part of yoga practice, but do you know why it’s suggested to never inhale longer than you exhale in a breath?

Join us Sunday at 2 for a fun experiential practice and discussion of the foundations of yoga. For total beginners or anyone curious about the fundamentals. This is my first 9 Month Hatha Yoga Training condensed into 90 minutes!

Learn the foundations of Acro Yoga. No super-yogis or prior experience necessary. Saturday, February 17th 2-3:30 PM @treehouseyogaaustin. —————————————————————
