A message from Pastor Jeff:
Last Sunday was all about Good News!
For some, it was Good News that the Patriots had a historic come back and won the Super Bowl. I predicted a different outcome, and even into the 4th quarter I looked pretty smart.
The baseball season is around the corner. Pitchers and catchers are reporting this coming week! That is certainly Good News!
On our 9th anniversary we found out we were going to be parents. Our Charis was Good News!
But the greatest Good News is that we can have relationship with God by faith in Jesus. Our focus last Sunday was in the book of Galatians.
Here were the 3 most important take-aways for our life together at CCC:
1. This Gospel of Jesus is to be lived out as family. In circles, not just rows.
Over and over “brothers and sisters” is the term Paul uses to describe his relationship with the Galatians. He even refers to them as “dear children”. But he also describes them as being foolish. That’s what happens in family. There is a deep, covenant-like love. But there is also truth, spoken in love. As we have sometimes said at CCC, God has called us to circles not just rows. We must figure out how to get in circles, around tables, through the week. Being in rows on Sunday is good, but that’s just part of the picture.
2. Watch out for a perversion of the Gospel!
The Gospel is the simple fact that we are made right before God by faith in Jesus - plus nothing.
Paul was shocked that the Galatians were living a perversion of the gospel which was faith in Jesus plus following the Jewish law. Never fall into the trap of thinking that something you may or may not do changes your standing before God.
3. The Holy Spirit supplies the power to live and carry each other’s burdens.
As Paul closes this letter to his brothers and sisters he reminds them to live by the power of the Spirit who dwells in them. Let the fruit of the Spirit flow through us as we carry each other’s burdens. Cindy and I are deeply grateful for the way you have walked with us over this past year.
And now for a bit of humor:
The pastor of a church was sitting in his study when the phone rang. “Hello. Is this Reverend Jones?” “It is.” “This is Bill Johnson with the Internal Revenue Service.” “I was wondering if you could answer a few questions?” “I’ll try.” “Do you know a John Timmons?” “I do.” “Is he a member of your congregation?” “He is.” “Did he donate $10,000 to the church?” “He will.
