Happy Friday Everyone. This cat is also saying "hi". I can't tell if he's happy or terrified. Anyway, I hope you get a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend.
The leaves are starting to fall. RAKE THEM UP? or MOW THEM DOWN? Vote for the one you will do!
RAKE THEM UP
Raking and bagging the leaves from your lawn obviously requires more time and effort, but is generally considered to provide better curb appeal. Any lawn seedlings should be rooted deep enough now, to stay put without damage. Raking is also a great opportunity to have the kids help out, with the promise of getting to enjoy a jump in the leaf pile.
MOW THEM DOWN
Mowing down leaves not only saves time, but offers other built in benefits as well. While you are cutting the grass, your lawnmower mulches up the leaves in place, creating the addition of a natural, free, nutrient-rich compost material, for your soil.

Happy Friday! I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather as much as this squirrel is. Speaking of that, a friend of mine discovered quite a nest yesterday, when she went to start up her grill, after having not used it for a couple weeks. If you have a grill that hasn’t be used recently, take a moment this weekend to check on yours.

Now that Starbucks has released their pumpkin spiced latte for the season, and the Halloween gear is starting to replace the patio furniture outside of the grocery store, it must mean fall is near. This year, I’m starting early to get my house ready for the cold, and you can too.
Mulching around plants in autumn has several benefits, from preventing soil erosion to protecting plants from moisture loss and shifts in temperature.
Get your heater checked:
I get it. No one wants to turn their heater on when it’s 89 degrees outside. But what you really don’t want is to be faced with a broken heater when it’s freezing outside. Weather here can range drastically. It’s a great idea to set up an appointment to have your system checked in October, or for a more economical approach, make an appointment with yourself to turn your heat on during a cool evening, to make sure everything is operating properly.
Clean out your gutters:
Clogged gutters can pose a danger to your home. Clean them out now to make sure rain and snow can flow freely and isn’t being impeded by leaves and debris.
Do a chimney check:
Schedule this well in advance to make sure you can safely use your fireplace when the first chilly night hits.
Get a tree inspection:
Heavy rain, wind, and snow can put pressure on tree limbs. You don’t want them snapping and ending up crashing through your roof or breaking a window. This is the perfect time to have them checked out.
Examine your utilities:
Check current bills against the same time last year. Has your electric bill gone up dramatically year over year? You could have an air leak that needs to be addressed. Is your water bill significantly higher than 12 months ago? You may have a dripping shower head, a running toilet, or a problem with your hot water heater. Time to call a plumber! I have one if you need a good reference.
Check for air leaks:
Little leaks can cost you big time, and the sooner you deal with them, the sooner you can start saving money. On average, homes lose up to 30% of their heating and cooling energy through air leaks. You can easily check for leaks with incense.
How to check for air leaks: With windows and doors closed, hold a lit stick of incense near window and door frames where drafts might sneak in. Watch for smoke movement. Fix air leaks by adding caulking and weather stripping which are both easy and inexpensive DIY fixes that will protect your home and wallet.
If I could do a handspring, I’d be doing one right now!
