EarthDay@Loudoun Family Festival

Mission: In search for a new location, we plan to bring the event back. The mission of [email protected] is to promote and celebrate environmental stewardship among county residents and businesses. This is accomplished through entertainment, exhibits, workshops and activities that engage and inspire the entire community, especially the next generation of environmental stewards. The event also creates an opportunity for local environmental organization(s) to connect with Loudouners.

Why 'plant blindness' matters — and what you can do about it

TRUTH HURTS:
Elisabeth Schussler and James Wandersee, a pair of US botanists and biology educators, coined a term for it in 1998: “plant blindness”. They described it as “the inability to see or notice the plants in one’s own environment”.

bbc.com A phenomenon called "plant blindness" means we tend to underappreciate the flora around us. That can have disastrous consequences not only for the environment, but human health.

SECOND PUBLIC HEARING THIS SATURDAY, APRIL 27 AT 9AM IN ASHBURN. It will be held at the Loudoun County Public Schools Administration Building.

"What the Planning Commission submitted is not such a plan. In fact it does you and our citizens a disservice and is anything but comprehensive,” Middleburg Mayor Bridge Littleton said. “It puts our future at risk fiscally and structurally and lacks a sustainable plan grounded in defensible data.”

If you can't make it to the second hearing, please submit comments to the Board. More info: https://secure.everyaction.com/yChPedI5B0KeIkCrepzx5A2

Why Companies Are Making the Case for Conservation

Nature provides society with countless resources, including the capacity to work smarter. For example, green infrastructure projects like bioswales, permeable pavements, and green roofs absorb and filter runoff after a storm like traditional gray infrastructure options, but at a lower cost—both financially and environmentally. Having recognized nature’s potential, both the public and private sector are embracing nature-based solutions (NBS) to further their social, environmental and business goals. #Loudoun

“We need to undo the conception that natural areas are inherently self-sustaining,” Natural Areas Conservancy said. “We need to start thinking of [them] as one more type of urban parkland, and we’d never say: ‘We built that playground; we don’t need to check and make sure the equipment is in good working order.’” Mother Jones

How many trees does it take to produce oxygen for one person?

IF YOU WERE WONDERING:
A human breathes about 9.5 tonnes of air in a year, but oxygen only makes up about 23 percent of that air, by mass, and we only extract a little over a third of the oxygen from each breath. That works out to a total of about 740kg of oxygen per year. Which is, very roughly, seven or eight trees’ worth. #SavingHumanFromExtinction #LessSufferingFromNaturalDisasters #HumanInducedGlobalWarming

sciencefocus.com Deep breath, you're in for a big surprise when you find out how many trees we need to provide oxygen for our lungs.

Supervisor Ron Meyer

Happy Earth Day! I am proud to be advancing major park initiatives — including leading the effort to add the Broad Run Stream Valley Park into our capital budget for the coming years. From the Potomac River to Hanson Memorial Regional Park, the trail park will be on both sides of the Run. The Board is also advancing a similar project along the Goose Creek (which will create a big circle!). Additionally, we are starting multiple parks along this route that will give Eastern Loudoun much-needed access to nature and green space.
