W&OD Trail

Guess what I just saw on my walk this afternoon between MM 3 and 2.5? A big boy!
I’ve been enjoying the asters and goldenrod along the trail but can someone identify this plant? Maybe it is boneset - Eupatorium?
New here so my apologies for redundancy - but, is there any place to stay in Purcellville? Lodging? Camping? Thank you!
If anybody finds a purple galaxy s9 on the trail let me know, it was lost somewhere in between east falls church metro and that little pond on the trail that has turtles 🐢
Met some friends on the W&OD Trail today between Sterling, Virginia, and Purcellville, Virginia outside Smith Switch Station...
I don't know how you police these types of electric "motorcycles" that are now speeding down the bike trail WITHOUT PEDDLING, But I fear a terrible accident awaits.
There is an issue on the trail between Hamilton Station and Irondale drive where a tree is down. Be careful up there.,
So here is my main concerns when on the trail. 1. Rude or oblivious bikers who do NOT let a walker know that they are to be passed. If you are mute, then use a bell. This is not a hard thing to do. And when you passed don't skirt the center line. Pass like you would on the road. 2. MOST IMPORTANT TO THE WOMEN - Not all men are angels!!! Please, please, please be aware of your surroundings. Wearing earbuds in both ears takes your awareness out of the equation. Please be safe.
New regional plan shows W&OD extended to the AT. Comments
It used to be that when I was walking on the trail, and someone on a bicycle was approaching me from behind, they would say something like "On your left" or "Bicycle approaching". Today I was only on about a half mile stretch between mile marker 30 and 29.5, and I was approached and passed by no fewer than a dozen cyclists, and not a single one of them announced themselves. I wasn't wearing headphones, and I wasn't looking at my phone. I could hear the approach, but still, wouldn't common courtesy dictate that you, as a cyclist, announce your approach? Or am I asking too much?
I didn't think any motorized carts, bikes, skateboards etc. were allowed on the W&OD.

45 miles of paved trail, in Northern Virginia, for walking, running, bicycling and skating and 32 miles of adjacent gravel trail for horseback riding.

Operating as usual

We have winterized all our water fountains for the season. Fountains at Buckthorn Lane, the Vienna Train Station, the Broad St bridge, Lawson Rd and the Purcellville train station have all been shut off. Those at Lee Hwy and Sunset Hills Rd were already off due to various issues, while the Cedar Lane fountain is an all-season fountain.

The downed tree inside the Beltway near Idylwood Park was removed yesterday...

Work has begun on the transmission tower near Smiths Switch Rd in Ashburn. Please be prepared for short, 15-minute-max trail closures as the process continues...

Be aware that there is a downed tree on the trail near MM 8.5 at Idylwood Park. We have a call in to have it removed, but that may occur tomorrow. In the meantime, please bypass the area by travelling through Idylwood Park, remembering that that park closes at dusk.

FYI: On or around tomorrow, November 3rd, Dominion Energy will be replacing the transmission tower nearest the Smith Switch office in Ashburn. This will necessitate occasional short trail closures, not to exceed 15 minutes, as a crane lifts tower segments over the trail.

The section of trail between Oak St and Little Falls St in Falls Church will be closed tomorrow due to dual trails construction, please use the detour north of the trail on Lincoln Ave.

Tomorrow, work on the dual trails project in Falls Church will be moving to the section of trail between Spring St and Oak St. This area will be closed to traffic, so please follow the detour north to Lincoln Ave.

As of today, the trail detour on the east side of Lee Hwy in Arlington will run along the north side of the bridge, not the south side. Cyclists should be prepared to dismount, as a section of the detour trail is significantly narrower than the regular trail.

As of today, the section of trail from Little Falls St to Great Falls St is closed for work related to the dual trails project. As construction / demolition progresses over the next couple of weeks, different portions of the trail in Falls Church will be closed for periods of time. While most detours will take users north to Lincoln Avenue, the current detour is south of the trail. Please note that we will attempt to keep these closures and detours a weekday-only occurrence for as long as possible...

Virus Adds Heft to W&OD Changes

If you've been on the W&OD Trail since the Pandemic started, you know how busy it has been.

The 1.5 mile section of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Trail (W&OD) that runs through the City of Falls Church is well on its way to adding dedicated cycling and pedestrian lanes by next summer, and is seen as all the more crucial given how the novel coronavirus is transmitted.

Starting on or around October 5th, Dominion Energy will begin performing major line work along the trail between Sandburg St and Gallows Rd in the Dunn Loring area. The construction is expected to continue well into next year and will require a detour of the trail onto Iliff Dr. During this time, most of the parking spaces along Sandburg St will be unavailable, but parking is possible just east of there at Idylwood Park (check w/ Fairfax County Park Authority for hours of operation and directions).

NVTA, Nova Parks break ground on W&OD “dual trail” improvements

http://ow.ly/uTWM50BavWz

localdvm.com CITY OF FALLS CHURCH, Va. (WDVM) — About 1.5 miles of the W&OD Trail will be converted to a “dual trail” with dedicated paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Leaders from the City of Falls …

We are pleased to be working with our amazing partners, The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and City of Falls Church Government on the W&OD Dual Trails project.

Monica Backmon, NVTA Executive Director, explains the importance of the widening of the W&OD Trail.

Today NOVA Parks, City of Falls Church Government, and The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority broke ground on the boldest rebuild of the W&OD Trail in a generation. Dual Trails will separate pedestrians and cyclists. It will improve flow and safety, and through the redesign, storm water management will be greatly enhanced. Construction starts on the Falls Church section within the next few weeks.

Speakers included:

Paul Baldino, event Emcee, and NOVA Parks Treasurer
David Tarter, Mayor of Falls Church
David Snyder, Falls Church City Councilman, and NVTA Board Member
Monica Backmon, NVTA Executive Director
Michael Nardolilli, NOVA Parks Chairman

Turns out our fence contractor *was* able to make it out Wednesday: No more bump on the Goose Creek bridge fence!

Another project starting Monday on the W&OD Trail, Dominion Energy will begin work on the gravel trail in the Ashburn area, a precursor to their coming line work there. As they lay and compact stonedust, expect occasional temporary equestrian trail closures for the following three weeks.

Also closing for two weeks starting Monday, the 24th, will be the side trail on the west side of the Lee Hwy bridge. This will allow for a permanent sidewalk to be installed there. Please follow the original detour during that time. We are getting close to completion...
