Ashburn Vision Source is a privately owned optometric practice that sees patients of all ages. Both Dr. Hinkle, Dr. Boyles and Dr. Chen see patients for routine vision care as well as for treating and managing eye diseases. We have fun and friendly staff ready to answer questions about insurance or help you pick out a pair of glasses. Our office also co-manages laser vision correction procedures with TLC. We encourage our patients to let us know how we are doing and how we can improve their experience at our office.

Pumpkin contains many different vitamins, including vitamin A. Vitamin A aids in the prevention of macular degeneration and cataracts. Pumpkin also has zeaxanthin and lutein- antioxidants that work together to maintain eye health by reducing the risk of chronic eye diseases.

Why does blue light exposure matter? Your eyes have minor natural defenses against most wavelengths of light, but virtually all visible blue light passes through the cornea and lens and reaches the retina. The fact that blue light penetrates all the way to the retina is important because laboratory studies have shown that too much exposure to blue light can damage light-sensitive cells in the retina. This causes changes that resemble those of macular degeneration, which can lead to permanent vision loss.

The optic nerve also conducts the visual impulses that are responsible for two important neurological reflexes: the light reflex and the accommodation reflex.

To help prevent computer eye strain, try this exercise: every 20 minutes, blink 10 times by closing your eyes as if falling asleep (very slowly). This will help re-wet your eyes.

Streff syndrome is a rare visual condition that causes both distance and near vision to deteriorate temporarily. Most common among children ages 10 to 14, this condition also decreases the eye's ability to focus often causing struggles with schoolwork. The disorder is thought to be brought on by high levels of emotional stress and tends to affect girls more than boys.

School-age children need an exam every two years after that if they have no visual problems. But if your child requires eyeglasses or contact lenses, schedule visits every 12 months.

Replace your contact lenses as instructed by your doctor. Over-wearing your contact lenses can increase your risk of bacterial infections.

Eyelashes have 3 phases in their growth cycle: Growth, Transition, and Resting. It typically takes about 8 weeks for your body to naturally grow, shed, and replace each eyelash.

According to Archives of Ophthalmology, consuming 3 or more servings of fruit a day could reduce your risk for age-related macular degeneration by 36%. Pineapples also contain bromelain, an enzyme that will help with digestion, and inflamation, in addition to protecting your eyesight.

Sharks' eyesight is well adapted to the marine environment with the help of a tissue called tapetum lucidum. This tissue is behind the retina and reflects light back into it, thereby increasing visibility in the dark waters.
