Hi from Molly,
Hope you'll join me for a wonderful trip I have in the works! I'm half way through my flier about a late September trip I'm putting together traveling to England.year! We visited the Birmingham Miniatura with a small group of collectors a year ago and happily found it has rebounded, as have many of the US shows. I think their recession mirrored ours, as has the recovery! My traveling there last year wasn't just about supporting Andy Hopwood, whose mother, Muriel founded the show years ago, but I've always loved this show, as it not only features legendary artisans, but really good dealers who don't or can't make it to shows in the US! I am elated when I see new talent showing up....found some fabulous, well-priced pieces.
The Miniatura show, at the NEC (National Exhibitiion Center), is Saturday and Sunday, Sept 30-Oct 1 - we're staying at the hotel right next door to it - our trip will extend on both sides of the show's dates.
It's the only time of the year that visitors have ticketed entrances to Buckingham Palace (the Queen is on vacation, back the end of September - you'll love the gift shop, perfect affordable souvenir... a shower cap that says Buckingham Palace on it!). We'll visit Windsor Castle/Queen Mary's Dolls' House, Covent Garden, Castle Howard - considered one of the most beautiful places to visit in the UK. I also love the medieval walled city of York - my favorite place to take people - the magestic York Minster/Cathedral is fabulous, plus we'll have entries to Fairfax House - where we'll see one of the finest collections of Georgian furniture, porcelain, tall case clocks, etc. that I have ever seen gathered in one place! As well as the Jorvik (Viking name for York) Center...it chronicles the invasions by the Vikings and Romans - with realistic life size tableaus, featuring both sight, sounds and SMELLS!!! - as you ride in a two person cocoon, with the narrative being given as you glide along - a unique chance to sit down and sight-see!!!. We will also visit Stately homes and Award winning Gardens, including Caroline Hamilton and Jane Fiddick's exceptional dolls' house collection beautifully displayed at Newby Hall, mini shops including Kristen Baybar's in Gospel Oak - and a night at the Feather's Hotel in Ludlow - dating back to Henry VIII's days! I also want to show everyone Ludlow Castle, an exceptionally romantic ruin, and more. Final tweaks are being given to both the itinerary and cost as I write.
Love to have you join me, the summer crowds have dispersed and the weather is lovely then... as are the gardens, giving their last hurrah until Spring! Will need $500 deposits to hold your place asap as we're already holding rooms in our hotels. I'm only taking 12 travelers along, so get your name on my list asap please. Twin beds and king beds are available. Plus, if you need a single room, we will have single supplements. I'll send you the final registration form by the end of this month, but please get your deposit in now, to hold your spot. Bring your DH, BFF, gather up a gaggle of club members, or come alone, you'll be surrounded by new friends in five minutes! We always have a great timel! Mail your deposit to Molly Cromwell Presents...Tours, 44421 Adare Manor Sq., Ashburn, VA 20147 I will hold all checks until we reach 12 travelers. Balances will be due mid-August.

Ursula from Speyer, has invited us to come to her home to see her marvelous collection of miniatures, displayed in room boxes that are inserted into a total wall in her home....you'll be inspired!
Hope to see you soon,
Happy 4th Everyone! We have all our chickadees assembled except our 2 Nashville grands and their parents - always a fun, boisterous time. I'm filling in time before we leave for brunch with throwing in laundry and typing up the itinerary for my last minute urge to head back to England in late September for some travel and 2 days at the Birmingham Miniatura - if you're interested, get back to me, asap.
One of our stops will be Hardwick Hall, home to Bess of Hardwick, richest woman in England except for Queen Elizabeth I and they hated each other!! I had last taken a group there about 10 years ago....and I was insistent, with my UK agent, that it had an "e" at the end of it! He and Wikipedia say
no, so I've capitulated!
Knowing that a lot of miniaturists are into stitchery of the small scale kind...I had forgotten that there were wonderful tapestries at Hardwick and other stitchery, until I read this Wikipedia brief account of her life that I thought might be of interest to many of you. I loved the part that she actually stitched with Mary, Queen of
Scots while she was being held captive....they worked together on the Oxburgh Hangings. I had forgotten about the Hardwick Hall textiles...now I'm really excited to go back....hope some of you can join me!
Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury (c. 1527-1608), known as Bess of Hardwick, was a notable figure of 16th century Elizabethan English society. By a series of well-made marriages, she rose to the highest levels of English nobility and became enormously wealthy. Bess was a shrewd business woman, increasing her assets with business interests including mines and glass making workshops. She was married four times, firstly to Robert Barlow, who died aged about fourteen or fifteen on 24 December 1544; secondly to the courtier Sir William Cavendish; thirdly to Sir William St Loe; and lastly to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, sometime keeper to the captive Mary, Queen of Scots. An accomplished needlewoman, Bess joined her husband's captive charge at Chatsworth House for extended periods in 1569, 1570, and 1571, during which time they worked together on the Oxburgh Hangings. In 1601, Bess ordered an inventory of the household furnishings including textiles at her three properties at Chatsworth, Hardwick and Chelsea, which survives, and in her will she bequeathed these items to her heirs to be preserved in perpetuity.
The 400-year-old collection, now known as the Hardwick Hall textiles, is the largest collection of tapestry, embroidery, canvaswork, and other textiles to have been preserved by a single private family. Bess is also well known for her building projects, the most famous of which are: Chatsworth, now the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire (whose family name is still "Cavendish", because they are descended from the children of her second marriage), and Hardwick Hall.
Told you you'd be interested in reading this! Get back to me if you are available to travel September 25th to October 3rd. Each person flies, hopefully non-stop, to Heathrow - where I and my agent will meet you, arriving on Sept 26 between 6:30 and 9 a.m. - if you want to fly in a day earlier to get brain and body together, we can reserve a room for you at the Crowne Plaza Heathrow and the coach will pick you up there about 9:30 a.m. on the
26th after the Heathrow arrivals have boarded our private coach. The show is the 1st & 2nd, we leave for home the 3rd, but are arranging for those who wish to stay on independently for a couple of days may do so. Our home away from home in London is right across the street from the V&A and close to Harrod's, Valerie's Patisserie and all modes of transport! Easy Peasy!! E-mail me for deposit info and to receive a copy of the itinerary, include your mailing address.
BTW, speaking of the V&A...the National Building Museum in our Nation's Capital has an exhibit of dollshouses from the V&A's collection! It's on now, so if you're near DC, you're informed! However, the weekend of my 33rd Mid-Atlantic/Tysons show, September 17 & 18, at the Crowne Plaza Tysons in McLean, VA we will go there either before or after the show, depending on which you pick! If you're in the DC Metro Area during that weekend, come along...I haven't booked the bus yet until I know how many seats we need! Bill and Barbara Studebaker were the first ones to let me know they would join me! Gold start for you guys!
