Grace Community Church Ashburn

Comments

I attended GCC from my young childhood into my young adulthood. While I recognize some members of the church are truly amazing and inspired me to become a better person, I was treated with many unsolicited comments that aimed to incite hate or discord because of my skin color and background. When I attended Grace Community Church, My family was the only black family in the church. As a child, I realized that in order to become a pastor at GCC, you have to be a white male and I’m not allowed to join a white boys club. During my time at the Church as a young preteen and teen, adult members would make many negative and snide comments, especially because I was a black child (adults knew better than to make those comments towards my parents). I spent many weeks crying, as a preteen and teen about how people would target me for my differences and skin color. I would avoid talking to people, attending church and became a recluse. My parents brought up a particular incident where an adult member targeted me specifically (for my race) and the pastors were extremely dismissive and shrugged it off. Soon, my parents finally realized that it was time to leave the church and opted for a more inclusive and diverse community. I am writing this to urge people to think twice about attending such a monochromatic community that does not actively recruit for specifically for black and brown people. There are plenty of other richly diverse churches in Northern Virginia. I wish that GCC would allow me to speak about my experiences, but I know that I’m dreaming, because I am not a white male, I know that they would never allow it. My voice as a black female was never valued and still isn’t. There are many people who are “good” but allow racism to happen right before them and just shrug. If I could speak before the congregation, I would ask people to think about how even nice people allow racism to happen and how to be aware of implicit biases. After the disturbing events in Charlottesville, I listened to GCC’s podcast August 13, 2017 and 20, searching for someone to condemn those tragic events. However, I couldn’t find it. Instead the Pastor Bob Donahue ranted about Jewish communities from two thousand years ago and couldn’t find the courage to acknowledge how neo-nazis and white supremacists came to Virginia with the purpose of eradicating the Jewish people and any black or brown person in this country. After speaking to friends of those religious organizations(Black and Jewish religious organizations), they said their communities had no trouble immediately condemning racism and violence. It feels like this Church should change there name to something more like “Cult Community” or “Monochromatic Community Church that ignores racism”. Because of my skin, many adult members targeted me and tried to question my culture or values. It was completely inapropriate for them to do this. I was just a kid trying to figure out where I was welcome or valued. Again, many of these racist remarks were made when I was 13-14 (nowhere around the time that I could vote or form an adult opinon). I want to make it clear, I never tried to invite these people to have a conversation with me and I would always do my best to exit the conversation that they created. While at GCC, none of the pastors spent time during sermons to talk about the importance of anti-bias training or talking about when or how peole can become vulnernable to think in a way that is explicitly or implicitly racist. Racism is afterall a sin. You would think that someone who is preaching morality would make an effort to talk about something so prejudicial, pervasive, and unequivocally unethical. Again, I’m not trying to bash anyone specifically, I met many amazing people, but I’m saying that something needs to change in GCC’s leadership. Diversity and preventing racism should be a priority because it benefits everyone.

We are a community that is overwhelmed by God's grace! Nothing defines us more than the truth that God has freely lavished on us forgiveness of sins through the atoning death of his Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. http://www.gracecommunity.ws

Liberating the Lowly – Grace Community Church

Our pastor talked about that today in a message that I think many of you would enjoy... even if you don't think you're into that kind of thing.🙂 Here that is: http://gracecommunity.ws/sermon/liberating-the-lowly #mercyministry #socialjustic #sjw #kaepernick #colinkaepernick #acts2 #earlychurch

But Now | Grace Community Church

Bob spoke on a foundational passage yesterday! Please take time to enjoy this one this week, if you can. "But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins."
