A new study from JAMA neurology suggest that engaging in physical activity and lowering vascular risk may have additive protective effects on delaying the progression of Alzheimer disease. Here's a quick breakdown!

📌 People who increase their physical activity by as little as 3,300 steps a day as they get older have less accumulation in their brains of a protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease

📌 From the researcher: “The takeaway is that every little bit counts when you’re talking about physical activity. You can get a substantial amount of protection just by increasing what you’re doing by a little bit, and making sure to maintain that level.”

So today's #TuesdayTip is all about how to recognize a stroke act F.A.S.T. If you have 1 or more of the following symptoms, immediately call 911 or emergency medical services (EMS) so that an ambulance can be sent for you:

📌 Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or
leg, especially on one side of the body
📌 Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or
📌 Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
📌 Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or
📌 Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

Tuesday Tips: Achilles Tendonitis

Pain in the heel? Try out some of these exercises! If you're still noticing symptoms, come in for an exam.

The Achilles Tendon attaches the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel (calcaneus). Irritation of the tendon can cause pain with push off at the heel.

📌Gastroc Stretch: Keeping your foot in neutral and your heel planted gently lean forward, feeling a stretch in your calf. Hold for 45 seconds, perform on each side

📌Soleus Stretch: With the same positioning as above, gently bend your back knee to feel a stretch closer toward your heel. Hold for 45 seconds perform on each side

📌Eccentric Calf Raises: Go up on your toes with both feet, lift your uninvolved foot, and slowly lower with the involved foot. Perform 2 sets of 10.

Tuesday Tips: Acute Ankle Sprain Management

Wondering what exercises you can do in the early stages of an ankle sprain? Check out these exercises to increase motion and decrease swelling!

📌Ankle Circles - Draw 20 circles in both directions (clockwise and counterclockwise) with your big toe

📌Active Range of Motion: Plantarflexion and Dorsiflexion - Point and flex your foot (like a gas pedal) 20 times

📌Active Range of Motion: Inversion and Eversion - Turn the bottom of your foot in and then rotate out like a windshield wiper 20 times

📌Seated Calf Stretch - Place a towel or strap around the ball of your foot and GENTLY pull your toes toward you. Hold for 45 seconds and perform twice.

Tuesday Tips: Knee Replacement Pre Operative Exercises

Knee Replacement in your future? Try these exercises to give yourself the advantage in your post operative PT!

📌Quadriceps Sets: Squeeze your quadriceps muscle (top of your thigh), pressing your knee down into the table. Hold for 5 seconds, performing 2 sets of 10 repetitions.

📌Straight Leg Raises: Keeping your leg straight, lift your leg up off the table to the height of the opposite knee. Perform 2 sets of 10 repetitions.

📌Side Lying Hip Abduction: This exercise works on muscles in your hip. Lying on your side, keep your hips stacked so there is a straight line from shoulders - hip - knee - ankle. Lift your leg up to the ceiling, leading with your heel. Perform 2 sets of 10 repetitions.

📌Heel Slides: This exercise is to work on knee flexion range of motion. Slide your heel toward you, performing 2 sets of 10 repetitions.

📌Short Arc Quads: Placing bolster (or a towel at home) under your knee, lift your heel up off the table, performing 2 sets of 10 repetitions.

📌Long Arc Quads: Sitting in a chair, kick your leg straight. Add weight as needed. Perform 2 sets of 10 repetitions.
