Stearns County Spotlight: St. Anthony, Minnesota and Century Farms
It’s a challenge to keep anything going for over 100 years, much less a family farm. The Stearns History Museum recently installed 15 new and replacement Century Farm signs to its annual program celebrating the milestone. Thanks in part to the efforts of Holly Christie and her work with the St. Cloud Diocese, this year we concentrated on St. Anthony, a small farming community located north of Albany on Minnesota Highway 238.
St. Anthony’s charm remains rooted in its predominately Slovenian and German settlers who settled there in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These families worked hard to establish farms including this year’s recipients such as Malley, Linn, Urbashich, Pogatchnik, Gogala, and Rademacher. As these operations grew, so did the town’s support businesses such as a creamery, blacksmith shop, grocery store, and bar.
But only one has survived from those days, Schiffler’s, providing a gathering place for local residents to talk about the trials of life while enjoying a cold brew. Erv Schiffler knew this community well. In a 2001 Minnesota Public Radio article he commented, “The Schiffler name has been here forever. My dad was a really great guy and a lot of people knew him, and it’s more like we’re bringing people in because they know us, and we try to treat people fair.” This commitment was and continues to be significant.
St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, the other town centerpiece, provides the spiritual and social needs of the area. “The church plays a pretty important role, I guess, in keeping a small community like St. Anthony together,” said Randy Klasen in that same MPR piece. Ruth Linn added, “Oh, absolutely. Without it, there wouldn’t be St. Anthony.”
Al Zeis summed up what this area means to local residents. “Just look here tonight,” he said on that Saturday night in Schiffler’s. “These are real people here. You’re not going to BS any of these people here. They work hard. I mean, look at their clothes, look at their hands.”
Perhaps this sentiment reflects what it takes to keep a farm in the family. The Stearns History Museum salutes its farmers, especially those enrolled in our program in 2020. Congratulations!
