We dump a couple seconds off our run today and ran a 15.987. HER FASTEST TIME YET!!

5yrs old with VERY limited hauling/seasoning and she's becoming a super fun ride! Time go clean up that first and work on MY set up to the 3rd! Lucky LaRae THANK YOU so so much for the opportunity to train this girl!!! Shes become my favorite in the barn along with Six Pack!

Today was a day of boot camp this mare has never experienced before...... she handled it like a pro!! Instead of being "done" 15 minutes into her workout (generally arena/round pen/barrel work), I had her lope some circles then snubbed up a green colt on her side and she long trotted/slow loped dragging that youngin for over 1.5 HOURS. Never did she give me a sign of being "done"!!

Moral of the story and her lesson today..... get your damn horses out and let them LOVE work!!! Yes she will still be a barrel/pole horse but she will also be able to do other jobs that allow her to be well rounded and HAPPY!! Excited to start breakaway and heeling off her🙃

SIX is Out of an own son of Steakin Six along with go dick go, rona bar, easy request and MANY other great lines!

16 yr old finished, seasoned 1D gelding. He will sit out in pasture for 2 months then go win money in the 1D. No maintenance so far but in sure injections would do him some good. 100% quiet in the alley. Once he sees the barrel he looks but doesn't leave your butt🤷🏼‍♀️ during the pattern if you don't move quick he WILL leave your butt lol don't get in his way, just hold on. Was trained of the 777 ranch in Stephenville TX years ago so he has just about the BEST training on him. Again... he is hard to ride in the pattern, only because he's quick. Doesnt sit and slow down for his turns 🤣

I am NOT in a hurry to rehome this guy nor am I in dire need to. Low ball me and youll get ignored. Hes worth WELL more than what I am asking but I'm too fat to keep up with him. Once my custom built saddle comes in ill be keeping him🤷🏼‍♀️

Give em the Time

We like to compare training a young horse the same as sending kids off to school.

Each month training is comparable to one grade. So for example a horse who just finished two months at your trainer is comparable to finishing first grade. And a completely finished bridle horse is one who has earned his doctorate.

Now just like not every human needs a doctorate, not every horse will need to be in a bridal. But I think we all can agree that they need more then a first grade education. We also don’t expect a first grader to know what he will do when he grows up or do we not drill a specific career into them. We keep teaching them the overall basics all through their elementary years, that’s 6 or 7 months in horse training terms. And just like little kids love to explore, this a perfect time to get your barrel horse to play around with cows, your show pony to work a ranch or your dressage horse to go and take a leisurely trail ride.

Then once they start Junior high and high school, they start learning more towards their specific career while still learning to better the fundamentals. This is no different for horses, once you have achieved a certain level of training, you can confidently start training towards their discipline.

However, just like that kid that has both parents with a doctorate, they might just want to grow up to be a mechanic, your extremely well bred reining bred horse might just not want to be the fancy show horse but would rather chase that steer and rope.

Now college and university is where it gets to be fun, you can finally start showing off that hard work and compete in the futurities and derbies. And as the years go by, they eventually get to be the finished bridal horse.

Just like a doctorate, it takes years of continuous training to achieve a bridal horse, and even then continued education is required to maintain the skills.

Now, we won’t accept a child to be rushed through his education because of a late start or difficulty of learning, so why would we make that acceptable for a horse?

It is our job as a parent or owner to adapt to each one, some learn faster, some learn slower, some excel in the show pen and some are going to be the best ranch horse you’ve ever had. Some are going to be easy and some, well they are either gonna be the CEO of a big company, with the right guidance or the leader of a jail gang with the wrong guidance, and you need to coach a lot more then others for them to get to be their best version.

But to sum this all up, if we would look at our horses the same way as we look at our kids, I believe a lot of horses would show us a side we didn’t expect to see and would truly impress us. But for the love of it all, give them a chance.
