Great News from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: There is a baby boom in the forest with two gorillas born in two separate groups of Mubare and Oruzogo families in the same week. The leader of Mubare family is Silverback Maraya. The birth raises the Mubare family size from 8 to 9 members.
In Oruzogo Katoto the Adult female of the group was found nursing the little one on July 25, 2020. The birth marks Katoto’s first baby with the lead Silverback of the family Kagaanga. The birth raises the total number in the group to 15 in Ruhija tracking zone.

While we continue to mourn the loss of Rafiki, we welcome a newborn to Bageni group in Virunga National Park, DR Congo. Adult female Karibu gave birth on June 9th and when Dr. Eddy conducted a monitoring visit on the 11th, both mother and baby were doing well. Dr. Eddy and ICCN trackers have been closely monitoring Karibu for a swollen arm and mild lameness and while her arm is still swollen, she is able to carry her infant and was very active during Dr. Eddy’s observation. Close monitoring of her condition will continue. #gorilladoctors #veterinariansforgorillas

BREAKING SAFARI NEWS: Here is some good news for conservation. More rare wildlife species are being sighted again in Uganda’s wild places. Last year around this time, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) announced the sighting of a WHITE EARED KOB in Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve; a littleknown but stunning protected area in northeastern Uganda. Only one had been sighted and very blurry images had been shared. Well, this evening as I was chatting with a good ranger friend of mine from Kidepo Valley National Park, Gilbert, I learned that they have had rare sightings of two white eared kobs in Kidepo as well. The same ranger had showed us Thomson’s Gazelles while on an evening game drive in Kidepo in December last year; another species that had been reported extinct in Uganda. I had to verify those gazelle images with Crammy, who explained that the animals could be returning from South Sudan and the Turkana side of Kenya; thanks to conservation efforts. Such news makes me yearn for the northeast even more. Can’t wait to be back up there.
JOB DONE SUCCESSFULLY.
