2019 fashion design graduates and faculty from VCUarts Qatar with legendary Indian-American fashion designer Naeem Khan at his New York City headquarters.

Naeem visited us in November 2018 when he met with our fashion design students.

Naeem’s collections have adorned glamorous women from around the world, including Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, Rachel McAdams, First Lady Michelle Obama, Queen Noor of Jordan, and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, among others.

New York Times bestselling author, and blogger Matthew Kepnes, aka "Nomadic Matt" visited us today.

He was given a guided tour of the university by Dr. Valerie Jeremijenko, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and checked out the Fab Lab, BFA + MFA Exhibition as well as the Materials Library.

Matthew, the author of “How to Travel the World on $50 a Day” has traveled to close to 100 countries and territories and was most recently in Jordan.

Isabelle St-Louis and Sara Shaaban at the opening of the BFA + MFA Exhibition.

The exhibition is free and open to the public and will run until May 18.

The opening reception for Part 5 of the "50 x 50" exhibition at Al Markhiya Gallery will take place tomorrow, from 9:30pm at Building 5 at Katara Art Center.

The exhibition will include works by VCUarts Qatar alumni.

For "50 x 50", the artists created three 50 by 50 artworks in any medium and in any theme of their choice.

Part 5 of 50 x 50 will run until July 5 and is free and open to the public.

Opening hours: Sunday to Thursday 11am - 9pm. Friday : 5pm to 9pm.

‪At the opening of the BFA+MFA Exhibition today. The exhibition is a celebration of the creative achievements of our graduating students & will run until May 18‬

2019 Commencement co-valedictorian Yeon Geong Hwang and her mother, 2012 valedictorian Yang Soon Ju, at the preview of the BFA + MFA Exhibition 2019 today.

The BFA+MFA Exhibition takes place on Saturday, from 3-5pm.

Putting the final touches to the BFA+MFA Exhibition, with Qatar Foundation Communications filming for the Convocation video.

The exhibition will open this Saturday from 3-5pm, while the Convocation will take place on May 7, from 10-11:30pm at the Ceremonial Court in Education City.

Isabelle St-Louis, our Manager of Exhibitions & Lectures, putting the final touches in place in the Saffron Hall, ahead of the BFA+MFA Exhibition, which opens this Saturday.

The Fashion Promotion Class at VCUarts Qatar, in collaboration with the Embassy of India, Doha, will be holding an exhibition on the versatile fabric khadi, from May 2-5 as part of Qatar - India 2019 Year of Culture.

The exhibition is titled: “Khaddar - The Culture of Cloth.”

The Fashion Promotion Class, which includes students from the graphic design and fashion design programs at VCUarts Qatar has rebranded khadi, the cloth of India, as a special class project.

The students have taken the challenge to make khadi more relevant to today’s consumer and to reposition it.

The results of their work will be on display at Room 390iii from May 2-5, with an opening reception taking place on May 2, from 4-7pm. All are welcome.

"The Start", an exhibition by VCUarts Qatar alumna Fatima Mohammed will take place at Workshop 3 at the Doha Fire Station on May 1 at 7pm.

"The Start" presents an overview of her work during her residency at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP, New York) earlier this year.

The exhibition will showcase the beginning of the development of the petroleum and natural gas industry in Qatar and how it helped the country grow and modernize. Qatar’s journey is portrayed through the eyes of Fatima's fictional character, 3naj (Anaj).

3naj is the product of both East and West. She is part Arab and part American bald eagle, the female eagle who nurtures her young by providing shelter, food, independence and freedom of flight. 3naj symbolizes the strong independent female character who displays her heritage proudly by wearing the batoola (face cover) as a protective golden beak.

The exhibition will run ‪until May 22.

A number of awards were given at "EDGE", our 20th annual fashion show, which took place at Mall of Qatar - قطر مول last night.

The show featured collections from sophomore, junior, and senior students from VCUarts Qatar, as well as three senior students from the University’s Richmond campus.

The designs ranged from “luxe-leisure,” jumpsuits featuring prints developed in collaboration with the Department of Graphic Design, to dresses embellished with messages that challenge the meaning of evening wear.

The Salam International Award went to Ayesha Rafiq for her collection titled, "Apocalypse Now."

The award for Most Outstanding Sophomore (Academic) went to Safa Al-Hadithi. The award for Most Outstanding Sophomore Collection went to E J Pagdangana.

The award for Most Outstanding Junior (Academic) went to Roudha A. Al-Mazroei. The award for Most Outstanding Junior Collection went to Jude Zahran.

The awards for Most Outstanding Senior (Academic) and for Most Outstanding Senior Collection both went to Heidi Rashad.

The awards for Senior Collection Richmond went to Lama Ali, Yuchen Chen, and Jessica Holt from our home campus.

VCUarts Qatar, Qatar Foundation and Mall of Qatar will be presenting “EDGE”, the University’s 20th Annual Fashion Show, this Saturday, April 27 from 6pm to 7pm at the Ooredoo Stage at Mall of Qatar.

The show will feature collections from sophomore, junior, and senior students from VCUarts Qatar, as well as three senior students from the University’s Richmond campus.

VCUarts Qatar alumna Maryam Al Darwish, who graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design from VCUarts Qatar in 2015, will be the guest designer at the show, where she will present her most recent collection.

VCUarts Qatar alumna Maryam Al Darwish, who graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design in 2015, will be the guest designer at “EDGE”, our annual fashion show, which is taking place this Saturday from 6pm to 7pm at the Ooredoo Stage at Mall of Qatar.

She will be showcasing her Resort '19 collection at the fashion show.

Her senior collection, titled “The Details”, won the W Doha Award in 2015, which propelled her to establish her own collection, “Maryam Al-Darwish”; where it made its debut at the W Doha hotel.

Under her brand, she has successfully released three Ramadan collections and she started her first Abaya collection in fall 2018. Maryam won the “Emerging Talent Award” from Grazia Magazine in 2018; which led her to further invest in her brand to release seasonal collections.

Her chic, asymmetrical, bohemian embroidered style has given Maryam a unique fingerprint amongst Qatari designers.

Congratulations to the winners of the Young Writers Program!

More than 130 schools from across Qatar took part in the program which is a joint partnership between the Embassy of the United States of America to the State of Qatar and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.

The mission of the program is to encourage Qatar’s youth to read, write and think critically about important topics in society. This year’s theme was Earth Day. The winners were announced at a special event at Qatar National Library.

The winning writing pieces will also be featured in a “Young Writers Journal” which will be published by the U.S. Embassy.

Assistant Professor Sadia Mir, a member of VCUarts Qatar's faculty, was the primary instructor and curriculum developer for the teacher professional development sessions of the Young Writers Program and also of the student writing workshops.

VCUarts Qatar fashion design alumni Ghalya Al Neemah and Maryam Al Majid at the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, where their designs were shown at the Paris Fashion Festival alongside other Arab designers.

The aim of the event was to promote Arab fashion internationally, to allow the exchange of ideas and creativity, and to allow young designers to meet internationally renowned designers and present their creations.

Don’t miss their two-person exhibition, titled “intima’ – tanmiyah” at Workshop 4, which closes on April 20.

The work presented is in response to their experiences of living, teaching, and eating over the past eight months. The exhibition marks the conclusion of their post-MFA residency program at our Painting + Printmaking department.

Like the freshly planted trees on the side of Dukhan Highway, Azim and asmaa’s recent relocation to Qatar has allowed them to acclimate and grow alongside one another. The work presented is in response to their experiences of living, teaching, and eating over the past eight months.
